Main Character Equipment Upgrade Priority
It's not only important to upgrade Oatchi in Pikmin 4, but you'll also need to upgrade your character if you want to make it all way. On this page on IGN's Pikmin 4 guide, you'll find a list of all the Upgrade Gear available to your character and our recommendation for what to prioritize upgrading.
How to Upgrade Your Gear
To upgrade your gear, you'll first need to get past Exploration Day 2 and find Russ in the Last-Frost Cavern. After this, you'll be able to use Raw Material to not only build, but purchase items from Russ for Oatchi and yourself.

Upgrades to Get First
At the start of each day in our Walkthrough, we've suggested items you should purchase to fit each new area. But here's a quick overview of what you should prioritize upgrading. The way you upgrade your character will depend on your playstyle, but here are some recommendations to start with:
- Start with the Scorch Guard as some of the early caverns are smothered in fire, so being protected from it will make you more efficient.
- Get a Headlamp before going to Blossoming Arcadia. Some of the sublevel caves are dark here, and you don't want to waste time finding a place only to not be able to see in it.
- When your Pikmin group is getting big, get the Idler's Alert and Idle Counter. This helps you maximise your Pikmin team. You can call them to you and see how many are standing around doing nothing, without having to keep going back and forth to get them.
- As the enemies get stronger, so should you. Start getting Tuff Stuff for you and Oatchi and upgrading this as far as you can so you're not injured.
- Gunk Busters are essential in the later areas, as they'll be covered in Sticky Mold and this will slow you down. You don't want this happening when you're fighting creatures, so being able to run over it without being stopped.
