Fallen Houses of the Modern Era
This section details major and minor noble houses that were extinguished in the era following Robert's Rebellion and beyond.
House Tyrell
Following the deaths of Mace, Margaery, and Loras Tyrell during the desctruction of the Great Sept of Baelor, leadership of House Tyrell fell to Olenna Tyrell. Olenna subsequently helped to create an alliance in support of Daenerys Targaryen's claim to the throne, resulting in an Invasion of Westeros.
During this war, Highgarden was sacked by a Lannister-led army after many of House Tyrell's bannermen, including House Tarly, abandoned them. Following this battle, Olenna Tyrell dies after drinking poison, apparently marking the end of the last known living Tyrell.
House Bolton
House Bolton was destroyed in the aftermath of the War of the Five Kings, due in large part to the actions of Ramsay Bolton.
Roose Bolton, the former Lord of the Dreadfort, had two sons. His legitimate heir, Domeric Bolton, succumbed to an illness in his youth and died. Roose's bastard son Ramsay Snow was later legitimized after capturing Moat Cailin from the Ironborn, becoming the new heir to House Bolton.
Soon after, Ramsay murdered his father and claimed the title of Warden of the North as his own. He subsequently killed Roose's wife Walda and their newborn child.
Ramsay himself was killed following the Battle of Winterfell, leaving no known successor to House Bolton.
House Martell
House Martell fell in a coup led by Ellaria Sand. Prince Doran Martell, the Lord of Sunspear and ruler of Dorne, was stabbed to death by Ellaria herself. Soon after, his heir, Trystane Martell, was assassinated by Obara and Nymeria Sand in King's Landing.
While Ellaria Sand and Oberyn Martell's bastard daughters technically had Martell blood, they were not legitimate heirs to House Martell, thus marking an end to the technical line of succession.
House Baratheon of Dragonstone
House Baratheon of Dragonstone was a cadet branch of House Baratheon created in the aftermath of Robert's Rebellion.
Stannis Baratheon, Lord of Dragonstone, had his sole descendent, Shireen Baratheon, killed in a bid to gain favor with the Lord of Light. Stannis's wife Selyse subsequently killed herself.
Stannis himself is killed by Brienne of Tarth following a battle with House Bolton outside of Winterfell.
Fallen Houses of the War of Conquest
This section details major and minor noble houses that were extinguished during and following the Targaryen conquest of Westeros, but before Robert's Rebellion.
HOUSE REYNE
House Reyne of Castamere was a vassal house sworn to House Lannister. During the rule of Tytos Lannister, House Reyne was the second wealthiest family in the Seven Kingdoms, behind only House Lannister.
Not content with that status however, they openly rebelled against their liege lord. The Reyne army was met by Lannister forces led by a young?Tywin Lannister. Tywin subsequently crushed the Reyne rebellion, burned Castamere, and had every single member of House Reyne killed, completely annihilating their bloodline. Tywin then had their corpses hung from the gates of?Casterly Rock, where they remained for several years.
The song "The Rains of Castamere" was inspired by these events.
HOUSE TARBECK
In the books, House Tarbeck was a noble house ruled by Lord Walderan and Lady Ellyn Tarbeck. They an ally of House Reyne during their rebellion against the Lannisters.
Many members of House Tarbeck, including Lord Walderan, died in battle during the war. Lady Ellyn and her son were killed when Tarbeck Hall collapsed during a Lannister attack on the castle.
HOUSE DARKLYN
House Darklyn was destroyed during a rebellion known as the Defiance of Duskendale. According to some histories, House Darklyn had been feuding with King Aerys II Targaryen after the ruler had denied rights and a town charter for Duskendale.
Lord Denys Darklyn, ruler of Duskendale at the time, subsequently managed to kidnap King Aerys. The Hand of the King, Lord Tywin Lannister, gathered an army outside of Duskendale, but was unable to attack with the king held hostage.
Ser?Barristan Selmy?managed to single-handedly infiltrate the castle and rescue the king. With no hostage and an army at his gates, Lord Denys surrendered. He was subsequently executed, along with his entire family. House Hollard, an ally of House Darklyn, was also destroyed in the aftermath. Only a young?Dontos Hollard?was spared, and was taken to King's Landing to serve as a squire.
HOUSE BLACKFYRE
House Blackfyre was a cadet branch of?House Targaryen?that rebelled against their liege lords during the First Blackfyre Rebellion. Following their defeat, the Blackfyre heirs fled to the Free Cities, and their descendents would attempt to dethrone the Targaryen line on four more occasions
Their final conflict with House Targaryen happened during the War of the Ninepenny Kings, and was ended when Maelys "The Monstrous" Blackfyre, the last of his line, was killed in single combat by Ser?Barristan Selmy.
House Durrandon
The Storm Kings of House Durrandon were the rulers of Storm's End during the War of Conquest, in which the Targaryens conquered Westeros.
The last Storm King, Argilac the Arrogant, was killed during the conflict. The Targaryen general Orys Baratheon then married Argilac's daughter, establishing the modern day House Baratheon, which kept the Durrandon sigil and words.
House Gardener
House Gardener once reigned as the Kings of the Reach. The last of their line was killed during the War of Conquest, in a battle called the Field of Fire, which was noted for being the only time in the war that all three of the Targaryen's dragons were on the battlefield at the same time.
House Hoare
House Hoare were one of the families responsible for ending the reign of House Greyiron in the Iron Islands. According to legend, the next king of the region was decided in a game of the finger dance. Harras Hoare was successful, and his line ruled a region stretching from the Iron Islands to the riverlands.
They eventually constructed the castle Harrenhal, but perished during the Targaryen's invasion of Westeros.
House Qoherys
Quenton Qoherys, formerly the master-at-arms of Dragonstone, was granted Harrenhal following the extinction of House Hoare. He subsequently formed House Qoherys, which lasted just two generations before it was ended during the rebellion of Harren the Red. Rule of Harrenhal then passed to House Harroway.
House Harroway
House Harroway was destroyed by Maegor the Cruel, after he became convinced that his wife had been impregnated by a Harroway. It is one of several houses who went extinct after gaining control of Harrenhal.
House Towers
Following the cull of House Harroway, King Maegor the Cruel decreed that rule of Harrenhal would go to the strongest of his knights. 23 of these knights fought in the streets of the town of Harroway for the prize. Ser Walton Towers was eventually won, although he died soon after claiming his prize.
His newly founded house, House Towers, died out just two generations later.
House Strong
House Strong was granted Harrenhal after the extinction of House Towers. The line was extinguished in the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of Dragons.
House Cargyll
House Cargyll was a noble family that participated in the Dance of Dragons. Twins and Kingsguard members Ser Arryk and Erryk Cargyll fought on opposing sides of the civil war, and killed each other in battle.
House Toyne
House Toyne was a family of Stormlands nobles. Ser Terrence Toyne was a member of Aegon the Unworthy's Kingsguard, and was caught sleeping with one of Aegon's mistresses. He was subsequently killed, and when two of his brothers sought vengeance, they were slain by Prince Aemon the Dragonknight, bringing an end to the house.
Ancient Fallen Houses
This section details major and minor noble houses that were extinguished during and following the Age of Heroes, but before the War of Conquest.
House Casterly
House Casterly ruled the Westerlands during the Age of Heroes. According to legend, they were somehow tricked out of their rule by a man named Lann the Clever, who would go on to found House Lannister.
The exact events that occurred during this time are unknown, only that the Casterly family very quickly disappears from the histories of the Age of Heroes, replaced almost overnight by the Lannisters.
House Greyiron
House Greyiron hails from Orkmont in the Iron Islands, and ruled that region for nearly a thousand years as its first kings. They were eventually defeated by a coalition of Andal warlords who had allied themselves with House Greyjoy, Orkwood, Drumms, and Hoares.
House Greystark
The Greystarks were a noble house that existed during the era of the Kings of Winter. House Greystark was a cadet branch of House Stark.
They controlled a castle known as the Wolf's Den, and existed for about 500 years before they joined House Bolton in a rebellion against the Starks. House Greystark was completely destroyed in the war that followed, and control of the Wolf's Den eventually passed to House Manderly, who now use it as a prison.
House Parren
House Parren was an ancient house formed by a union of First Men and Andal nobles in the times before the rule of the Iron Throne. It is unknown why the house fell, but their line of succession ended long before the events of Game of Thrones.
House Amber
House Amber was a noble house that was conquered and destroyed by the Starks during the era of the Kings of Winter.
House Brightstone
House Brightstone was a noble family that existed before the Andal Invasion. Their lord, King Jon Brightstone, was betrayed by an Andal warlord and killed. An Andal knight named Corwyn Corbray later married King Brightstone's daughter, and formed House Corbray, now a vassal of House Arryn.
House Brook, Briar, Brownhill, Holt, Hull, Lake, Shell, and Wade
These families were among the houses of the Greenblood who chose the first High King of Dorne. They fell during the Andal Invasion.
House Dryland
House Dryland is an ancient family that once ruled a region in Dorne as the Kings of the Brimstone from Hellgate Hall. The were eventually defeated by Princess Nymeria of the Rhoynar, during their conquest of Dorne. Her line of succession would eventually become the present day House Martell.
House Fisher of the Misty Isle
House Fisher was a noble house who ruled the Misty Isle. They are said to be the oldest line of First Men river kings, but were destroyed after warring with the Storm Kings and the ironborn. In the centuries that followed, many have claimed to be descendants of the river kings, although the survival of the Fisher lineage has never been verified.
House Frost and Greenwood
House Frost and Greenwood were noble families of First Men who were conquered by the Kings of Winter, the ancestors of modern day House Stark.
House Justman
House Justman once ruled the the riverlands as the Kings of the Trident. The house was founded by Benedict Rivers, a bastard of House Blackwood and Bracken.
His line ruled for nearly 300 years, but fell to the armies of Qhored Hoare, the King of the Iron Islands.
House Lothston
House Lothston was the sixth house to rule Harrenhal. It is said that their downfall came after a member of the family began to dabble in dark magic.
House Osgrey of Leafy Lake
This house was once a cadet branch of House Osgrey. Their line died out for unknown reasons, although House Osgrey still persists to this day.
House Towers
House Towers (no relation to the more modern House Towers of Harrenhal) was a noble family who were conquered by the Kings of Winter.
House Mudd
House Mudd once ruled a region of the riverlands as Kings of the Rivers and the Hills. They were conquered and destroyed during the Andal invasion.
House Shell
House Shell ruled a region of the Vale as King of the Fingers in the time before the Andal invasion. Their family fell when King Dywen Shell was betrayed by an Andal warlord.
House Teague
House Teague once ruled a region of the riverlands as the Kings of the Trident. They were destroyed in a rebellion after trying to force the new gods onto their vassal houses. Their king, his sons, and his brother were all killed in a battle known as the Battle of the Six Kings.
House Woodfoot
House Woodfoot once ruled Bear Island, but were conquered and wiped out by invaders from the Iron Islands.
