Dorne, the southermost kingdom in The Seven Kingdoms is realtively isolated. Its capital is Sunspear and Dorne is primarily a harsh desert land, where water is a treasure. It is the hottest region in Westeros, the only one possessing a desert. Scorpions and vipers are abundant throughout this kingdom. The Prince or Princess of Dorne rules the region and they are taken from House Martell.

Dorne is very distinct from the rest of Westeros, ethnically and culturally. One mellennium prior to the events in Game of Thrones, ten thousand ships led by Queen Nymeria of Rhoyne landed on the beaches of Dorne. ?These refugees from Essos forged an alliance with Lord Mors Martell, and then conquered the penninsula. After the invasion the exotic customs of the Rhoynish were adopted by Dorne. Their customs considered Prince and Princess equal titles, equal inheritance by gender. ?They also believed in the gods of the river and did not condone homosexuality.
