Dragonstone
A cold, harsh island in the?Narrow Sea?off the east coast of?Westeros, northeast of?King’s Landing?and south of Crackclaw Point. A volcanic island, it features a small port and large castle of the same name, decorated by hundreds of ominous black stone dragon statues, built by the?Targaryens?~500 years ago.??Originally the seat of?House Targaryen?during the days of old?Valyria, Dragonstone was seized during the rebellion that saw the downfall of that house.?A proportion of the Royal Fleet docks in Dragonstone's ports, the island being in a valuable position in?The Narrow Sea, as it guards the entrance to Blackwater Bay and the sea approaches to?King’s Landing.

Dragonstone is perhaps most famous for its castle, likened in the shape of a roaring dragon, carved into black stone. Within, the painted table is found, a massive map of Westeros where it is said?Aegon I the Conqueror?sat and planned his invasion of Westeros.
It was formerly a part of Old?Valyria, being settled by the?Targaryens?as a trading outpost. It was the largest Valyrian stronghold left intact following the destruction of Valaryia during the cataclysmic event known as the Doom. The Targaryen lords on Dragonstone were the last remaining descendents of Valyria, along with their three baby?dragons.
Following these events, the remaining?Targaryens?set out west from Dragonstone, invading Westeros.?Aegon Targaryen?and his two sister-wives took their dragons to Westeros in order to conquer the lands that were ruled by the Andals and the First Men.?Following this,?King’s Landing?was named the new capital of the Targaryen dominion; Dragonstone becoming the primary hold of the King’s heir, the Prince of Dragonstone and the ancestral stronghold to the Dragon Kings of Westeros, until they were overthrown by the rebellion of?Robert Baratheon?and?Eddard Stark. During the rebellion,?Viserys Targaryen?and his infant sister,?Danaerys Targaryen, before going into exile among the?Free Cities?of?Essos, used the island as an escape point.?

Following the successful rebellion against the ‘Mad King’?Aerys II Targaryen, the newly appointed King?Robert Baratheon?named his younger brother?Stannis?as Lord of Dragonstone until his son?Joffrey?comes of age. This act serves to create a rift between Stannis and his brothers, as Stannis felt he should have been given command of the Baratheon’s ancestral seat at?Storm's End?instead of Renly, his younger brother.?Stannis utlizes Dragonstone as his base of operations and seat of power during the War of Five Kings.
Houses sworn to Dragonstone include Valeryon, Sunglass, Celtigar and Bar Emmon.
Dragonstone is also the only place in Westeros where Obsidian is found naturally.
