Weapons
Much like Breath of the Wild, Link will be able to find and utilize a large variety of Weapons in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
Where to find Weapons
These weapons can be found as you explore, from makeshift items in the wilderness, defeating enemies and many other ways. Weapons come in many shapes and sizes, each with its own offensive stats and durability.
Another returning feature from Breath of the Wild is Weapon Durability, meaning that each weapon can only be used so much before it will break (but will deal extra damage on the blow that breaks it). Because of this, you'll need to constantly be on the lookout for new weapons to find to add to your inventory to combat different threats.
Weapons can be thrown at enemies or charged up for unique attacks. They can be quick-switched by pressing right on the D-Pad, or left to change shields. Certain weapons allow Link to perform a flurry counter attack if the enemy's attack is blocked or dodged at just the right time. Certain weapons that sparkle may also have a special bonus, including, but not limited to, higher attack, higher defense, enhanced durability, or faster draw speed.
Fuse Ability and Weapons
A new feature in Tears of the Kingdom is the Fuse ability, where Link can attach certain materials, objects, and other weapons together to not only alter the effect of the weapon but increase its durability and damage as well.
Keep in mind that once you have fused a weapon with something, you won't be able to attach something else to it. However, you can destroy the fused material to get the original weapon back. See our guide to the best weapons and fusions.
All Weapons in TotK
There are four types of weapons in Totk: One-handed weapons, two-handed weapons, spears, and bows. You can learn about what kind of weapon you have by checking it on the inventory, as one-handed weapons have a blue symbol that looks like a dagger, two-handed weapons have an orange symbol that looks like a sword, and spears have a purple symbol that looks like a, well, spear.
While different weapon types work for different situations, you should really set a time to try all of them out to see which type fits better with your play style. For example, players big on blocking attacks might favor one-handed weapons. In contrast, players who prefer to distance themselves from their enemies might look forward to trying out bows or spears. Below we go over each one of these categories.
One-Handed Weapons
One-handed weapons are lighter than two-handed ones, which is why Link can hold them with one hand. These weapons will allow you to perform quick attacks in short succession while leaving you able to hold a shield with your other hand. This includes the Master Sword.
Two-Handed Weapons
As their name implies, two-handed weapons are those that need both of Link's arms to be wielded. These weapons tend to deliver slower but stronger blows. Something that you need to keep in mind is that you won't be able to block attacks using your shield when handling these kinds of weapons.
Spears/Polearms
Like tow-handed weapons, spears/polearms need both hands to be wielded. The main difference is that with these weapons, you'll be able to deal damage at a certain short range, allowing you to maintain some distance from enemies. This will prove especially useful when you're dealing with enemies like the gloom-corrupted monsters that lurk in The Depths.
Bows
Bows are a secondary type of weapon, meaning that at every moment, you'll be able to equip your primary weapon and a bow. Bows come in all shapes and sizes, with some dealing more damage than others. To use these weapons, you'll need arrows, and once you have them, you'll be able to deal damage at a more extended range.
Shields
Shields are your first line of defense against incoming attacks. To use a shield, you just need to equip it and press ZL to use it. If you successfully block an attack, you'll get a short period of grace where your enemy will be vulnerable to your attacks. You can even get the Hylian Shield to complete Link's classic look.
