Weapon Modifiers
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom continues the tradition of allowing you to boost your weapons using Weapon Modifiers, a mechanic that Zelda veterans will recognize from Breath of the Wild. In this IGN wiki guide, we go over how to apply Weapon Modifiers to your weapons; we will explain what they do and the difference between modifiers and passive abilities.
What are Weapon Modifiers
Weapon Modifiers are special buffs that will increase a weapon's performance in some way. For example, you can come across a weapon that has an "Attack Up" modifier, which will increase that weapon's attack power by a specific amount.

To figure out which weapons have modifiers, simply check your weapon inventory for a small icon in the upper left corner of the weapon's image. For example, if you see a sword icon, the weapon has an "Attack Up" modifier, while a diamond icon indicates a "Durability Up" modifier.
All Weapon Modifiers
Below you'll find a complete list of all the weapons modifiers in the game, including what they do and which type of weapons can have them.
Weapon Modifier | What it does | Available to |
---|---|---|
Attack Up | Raises a weapon's attack power | Available for Melee weapons and bows |
Durability up | Increases the item durability, aka how long it takes before it breaks | Available for shields, bows and melee weapons |
Long Throw | Allows you to throw a weapon even farther | Available for Melee Weapons |
Quick Shot | Affects your draw speed, allowing you to fire arrows quickly | Available for Bows |
Shield Guard Up | Increases the shield's defense | Shields |
Critical Hit | Combos executed with this weapon will deal more damage on the final hit | Available for Melee weapons |
Besides the type, you can also categorize modifiers by their tiers, with higher-tier modifiers giving you more attack power or speed than lower-tier ones.
There are four different tiers:
- White
- Green
- Blue
- Gold
How to Get Weapon Modifiers
If you're fortunate, you can come across weapons that already have weapon modifiers on them. However, there's also a way to purposely add modifiers to weapons you already have in your inventory.
To add a modifier to a weapon, all you need to do is go to the Death Mountain area and find yourself a Rock Octorock. Once you do, throw the weapon you want to modify in front of it. The monster will swallow it and then spit it out with a random modifier installed (make sure you block the incoming weapon, or you'll lose some health). The best thing about this process is that the Rock Octorock will also restore your weapon's durability.
The only catch here is that you can only do this once every blood moon, so to modify and restore your whole inventory, you'll need to find multiple Rock Octorocks before the next blood moon.
A good thing to remember when hunting for Rock Octorocks is to turn off your sages' vows before you engage with the monsters. This way, the sages won't be able to kill the monsters before you can repair your weapon.

Weapon Modifiers vs. Passive Abilities
Besides modifiers, weapons can also have passive abilities. These abilities are inherent to specific weapons, meaning that you will always get the same passive ability when acquiring a certain weapon. In contrast, with modifiers, you could have two of the same melee weapon with different modifiers. Moreover, unlike modifiers, passive abilities cannot be added to weapons.
All Passive Abilities in the game
Below is a complete list of all the passive abilities in the game and what they do.
- Stamina up: The weapon consumes less stamina for charged attacks.
- Strong Fusion: Attaching a material increases the material's power but doesn't add as much durability.
- Extra Durable: The weapon has high durability.
- Zonaite-Powered: It resonates with attached Zonai devices to increase its attack power slightly.
- Improved Sneakstrike: The weapon yields more powerful sneakstrikes than ordinary blades.
- Water Warrior: The weapon's attack power increases when it gets wet.
- Demolisher: The weapon is excellent for breaking rocks.
- Desperate Strength: The weapon yields powerful attacks when you're down to your last heart.
- Improved Flurry Rush: the weapon increases the power of flurry rush during a perfect dodge.
- Fuse Recycling: Bursting materials attached to the tip can be reused repeatedly.
- Wind Burst: Swinging the weapon produces a strong wind.
- Breaking Point:
- Wind Razor: The weapon cleaves the wind and creates a vacuum.
- Gloom Toll: This weapon's gloom will gradually wear down the body of its wielder.
