How to Farm Frog Coins
In Super Mario RPG, you can collect special green coins called Frog Coins that can be spend on a variety of valuable items and accessories that you can purchase as you explore the Mushroom Kingdom and beyond. These coins are fairly rare to find, often found in out of the way places, in Hidden Treasure Chests, or won from completing tough minigames.
A few places you can routinely get Frog Coins (albiet at a slower rate), include:
- Getting high scores on the Goomba Thump minigame in the Pipe Vault
- Catching gold beetles during the Beetle Race minigame at Booster Pass
- Defeating Special Enemies that appear in random battles
While there are many ways to earn Frog Coins, there are few places where you can reliably find more:
The Forest Maze Wigglers
One way to routinely get Frog Coins early in the game is in the Forest Maze area past Rose Town in the Tadpole Pond Region.
Upon entering a large area with multiple hollow tree trunks you can jump into, you'll find Wiggler enemies crawling in, out, and around the stumps. By jumping on them and bouncing 10 times without missing, you can earn a Frog Coin.
This can be repeated as much as you like, but if you miss your jump or fall to their side, you may be drawn into battle.
Land's End Whirlpool Ants
Easily one of the most reliable and quick ways to gain Frog Coins quickly (with a bit of skill and luck), is by going to the Land's End area before Belome Temple and Bean Valley.
At the latter half of Land's End, you'll fall into a desert area featuring several sand whirlpools that take you to different areas. In most areas, one of the whirlpool has a Shogun ant enemy that pops out of the center as it moves around before disappearing back inside.
When it pops out, you can jump on its head 3 times in a row to earn one Frog Coin!
The key to reliably farming Frog Coins from the ants is by making sure you have a few things prepared:
- Some of the early areas often have enemies floating around the whirlpools that can get in the way of you jumping consistently. Try to clear the area of distractions before trying to bounce off the Shogun ants.
- Some of the earlier rooms have ants in the whirlpool that behave differently: running into them or landing by their side will cause them to fight you automatically, but other areas can feature Shogun ants that will just cause you to bounce to the side as they emerge from the whirlpool, and then go back in. Once you've found an area like this, use these ants to avoid getting drawn into unnecessary battles each time you miss an attempt.
- Jumping on a Shogun ant's head will cause you to bounce off at a somewhat random trajectory, so you'll need to quickly course correct to land back on their head two more times. Get a feel for how much of the control stick you need to move to get back to the center of their head.
Once you have the perfect area with an ant head to jump on, you can keep jumping on their head as much as you want to keep getting Frog Coins every time you land three jumps. As an added bonus, if you do fall into a whirlpool and get sent to a new area, or accidentally get into fights, you can defeat Special Enemies to earn more Frog Coins while you prepare for farming!
What to Buy with Frog Coins
After you've amassed a good number of Frog Coins from various sources, these are the items you should try and save up to buy:
Frog Coin Emporium (Tadpole Pond) | Frog Coin Emporium (Seaside Town) | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Items | Items | Accessories | |||
Sleepy Bomb | 1 Frog Coin | See Ya | 10 Frog Coins | Exp. Booster | 22 Frog Coins |
Bracer | 2 Frog Coins | Earlier Times | 15 Frog Coins | Coin Trick | 36 Frog Coins |
Energizer | 2 Frog Coins | Flower Ring | 50 Frog Coins | ||
Party Bracer | 5 Frog Coins | ||||
Party Energizer | 5 Frog Coins |
While the early items you can buy from the Tadpole Pond emporium have some uses to boost your abilities in battle, they should be bought sparingly, as the Frog Coins are best saved for the Seaside Town emporium located on the second floor of the Elder's House (since most of those items can eventually be found elsewhere and are one-time use).
The emporium in Seaside Town has items that can be used indefinitely as well as important accessories. The See Ya item lets you get out of battle (though you can also achieve this effect with the Lamb's Lure / Sheep Attack Item), while the Earlier Times allows you to reset a battle if you find a boss fight isn't going your way (or want to reset an encounter you've spent FP trying to get a 100 Super Jump combo).
As for the accessories, The Exp Booster and Coin Trick are essentials if you need to grind XP/money - or even pass the Exp Booster around to each character to try to get them all at the same amount of experience so they all level up at once. Meanwhile, the Flower Ring is great for any character you find yourself constantly using abilities, like Mallow or Peach -- or even reducing the amount of FP Mario needs to Super Jump when trying to get 100 in a row.
