There are currently seven heists in GTA Online, including a tutorial for only two players. In order to partake in heist activities, players must be either a Rank 01 character (to join a team) or a Rank 12 character (with a high-end apartment) to serve as the Heist Leader/Host.
Preparing for GTA Online Heists
If you want to get ready to take on the most challenging (and most rewarding) activities available in GTA Online, here is a list of things you should do to prepare.
Rank up
Even though most players are already well above the rank requirements of 01 or 12, you'll want to make sure you're as high a level as possible before entering into a Heist activity. As your level increases, so does your ammo capacity and access to better weaponry, upgrades and items, making?surviving a setup job or heist finale much easier.
Upgrade Your Arsenal
The enemies you'll encounter during heists are tougher and more plentiful than those in standard missions, especially if you're attempting to complete one of the Heist Challenges.
Upgrade your weaponry and gear at a local AmmuNation or Los Santos Customs as much as possible (keeping in mind that you'll still need cash for specific heist setup, particularly if you are the heist leader) in order to turn the odds in your favor. Grenade Launchers or RPGs are highly recommended.
Communicate Effectively
While you can get by in most GTA Online contact missions by lone-wolfing your way through each objective, that's not the case while playing a heist. Each objective will require careful collaboration between team members - especially the ones wherein the team will have to split up, or tackle obstacles such as co-op hacking or unison stealth kills. This means you'll need to be able to effectively communicate with the people you're playing with, so plug in your headset and try to stay focused on the task at hand.
Consider playing through certain missions that have multiple objectives (such as Martin's "Pick Up Sticks") or tackling large-scale objectives (like A Titan of a Job) on hard mode with your friends, to get used to the level of coordination you'll need for heists. Get comfortable working as a team, because if things go wrong (and they most likely will), you'll need to know the strengths of each player (and character) so you can make as clean a getaway as possible.
Practice Missions
A heist in GTA Online will take you through various missions with multiple objectives and many different enemies. Consider playing some of the following missions - on hard, of course - as a form of prep work for your team:
- Crime Scenester - Lester - Lvl 20
Use this low-level mission to practice a basic pincer maneuver. Get used to communicating with your team while flanking an enemy. - Pickup Sticks - Martin - Lvl 21
This mission is all about working together as a team while being able to split up. For the first pickup, try dropping two members on the ground and having two stay in the helicopter to provide covering fire. - Death From Above - Martin - Lvl 23
If possible, have one team of two parachute into the mansion compound and the other two players provide a distraction at the front gate. - Base Invaders - Ron - Lvl 27
Great for teammates to practice their piloting skills. Have one pilot use the plane to draw fire from their parachuting team members, then pick up any stragglers. - The Los Santos Connection - Martin - Lvl. 40
Another multi-objective / location mission that will force teams to work together and protect one another while in the middle of a firefight.
- Chop Chop - Trevor - Lvl 43
A great objective-based mission that has hacking minigames, as well as both aerial and ground combat. - Cleaning the Cat House - Martin - Lvl 45
Try to have your team members approach the motel from four different locations, then split up into two cars for the ride back to the safe house. - Four Trailers? - Lester - Lvl. 45
Form teams of two and split up from the get-go. Once you've collected the trailers make sure the two drivers are in constant contact. - Extradition - Martin - Lvl. 50
Consider having one of the crew members bring a helicopter to the bus and escaping by air. - Stocks and Scares - Lester, Lvl 70
This is an excellent multi-objective mission for teams to practice with. It pits you against a formidable enemy force and requires several hacking / unlocking minigames. - Docks to Stock II - Lester, Lvl 75
Another good exercise in two-party communication. One crew member pilots the Cargobob (which the whole team will have to steal from Ft. Zancudo if no one owns one) while the other three storm the docks.
