Brynden Tully, nicknamed "The Blackfish," is a member of?House Tully. He is the younger brother of Hoster Tully, and the uncle of Catelyn Stark, Lysa Arryn, and Edmure Tully.?

Brynden earned glory and fame during the War of the Ninepenny Kings. He eventually accompanied?Lysa Tully?to the?Vale of Arryn?for her marriage to Lord?Jon Arryn. For this deed, Brynden was named Knight of the Gate by Lord Arryn.

For much of his life, Brynden had an argumentative relationship with his brother, due in large part to Brynden's refusal to marry. The two eventually made up on Hoster Tully's deathbed.

During the War of the Five Kings, Brynden acted as one of Robb Stark's principal military commanders and advisers. He manages to escape the massacre at the Red Wedding by pure coincidence, and manages to liberate a captured Riverrun from House Frey.

Brynden continues to hold the castle against a Lannister-led siege, until Edmure Tully arrives and under duress, orders the the castle gates opened. Brynden refuses to surrender, and is killed.
