October's Best PSN Deals

Every week dozens of PS4, PS3 and Vita games go on sale in the PlayStation Store, and it's hard to keep up with all the best deals before they disappear. We've sifted through the noise and highlighted those select few that might be worth your attention.

Alien: Isolation

From our Review: Thanks to a slick opening that includes nostalgic narration and busted-tracking-on-the-VCR visual effects, the first five minutes of Alien: Isolation are far and away better than any piece of last year’s dreadfully disappointing Aliens: Colonial Marines. But by the end of the 15 to 20 (!) hours I spent with the mano-y-xenomorph survival horror show, I wish I’d stopped after the first half-dozen. That’s not to say Isolation is anywhere near as bad as Colonial Marines, but its crime is equally egregious: it is a great idea that, in practice, not only wears out its welcome, but drags on so long that it almost completely erases any trace of the fun I once had. Which is a whole different form of horror than I was expecting.

BloodRayne Games

From our Review: I have a confession to make. I have absolutely no idea what BloodRayne is about. OK, so there's some sexy vampire lady in the game, and she hunts other vampires. I think. But after hearing a great deal about her mediocre gaming exploits and her terrible film, I gave BloodRayne an indefinite pass in my head. Then I played BloodRayne: Betrayal at this past year's E3, and it left an indelible mark on me as the single biggest surprise of the show.

Catherine

From our Review: After spending lots of time with the sordid tale of Catherine and putting down my controller to reflect on the experience, I felt refreshed. For all of the old, tired ideas that plague our industry, it was really nice to play something authentically different. And I mean really different, because Catherine is in no way, shape or form like anything you've ever played. But what's even more exciting about Catherine is that it's one hell of a game, too, and is wildly successful in most of what it attempts to do.

Dead Island Games

From our Review: Dead Island is Fallout 3 with zombies. Plenty of people are going to compare it to Dead Rising (as you can create weapons) and Left 4 Dead (as the action is first-person and good for four players online), but when I finally got past the game's obtuse opening and less than stellar cutscenes, I found a world rife with quests, interesting environments, and a character progression system that had me begging for more hours in the day. In short, Dead Island's a rough around the edges role-playing game, and I dug it.

Organ Trail: Complete Edition

Organ Trail is a retro zombie survival game. Travel westward in a station wagon with four of your friends, scavenging for supplies and fending off the undead. Members of your party might die of dysentery or you might have to put them down yourself when they get bit. Faithfully recreated it as if it were on the Apple II, Organ Trail offers amazing 16 color art and retro beeps and boops as well as true-to-afterlife zombie mechanics, themes and references.

Castlevania Games

From our Review: When developer Mercury Steam began crafting its Lords of Shadow series, hardcore Castlevania fans were largely brought along kicking and screaming. After all, the studio was intent on doing its own thing, on weaving its own unique tale in the larger Castlevania universe. The result – 2010’s Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – was wildly successful, and surprisingly so. It wasn’t the first 3D Castlevania game to be good, but it was, perhaps, the first to be great. It understood Castlevania, even if it felt and played more like a God of War game.

Devil May Cry Games

From our Review: DmC Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition brings the same great game to PlayStation 4, along with a couple of tweaks to make it feel different for returning veterans. The sharper visuals, smooth 60-fps gameplay, and other features and enhancements gave me plenty of reasons to be happy about coming back, and to recommend that you pick it up for the first time.

Daylight

From our Review: It took me three hours to finish Daylight’s randomly generated maze of horror. While two of those hours managed to be somewhat spooky, one was pure frustration, spent wandering aimlessly through hallways in first-person perspective, looking for a collectible item I’d missed. In that time, the well-constructed atmosphere and story drained away and revealed Daylight’s true frame: a formulaic find-the-hidden-object game padded out with some meaningless crate puzzles.

Grim Fandango Remastered

From our Review: Playing classic adventure Grim Fandango again is like seeing a skeleton get up and start walking around – which is exactly what afterlife travel agent Manny Calavera does in this Day of the Dead-inspired tale. It joyously exhumes the corpses of both fallen genre titan LucasArts and Grim Fandango itself, whose out-of-print and unsupported status had rendered it nearly impossible to find – let alone play – over the past decade and a half.

R.B.I. Baseball 15

From our Review: Every Major League Baseball team starts the season with the same record, but it doesn't take long to know whether a team will be a contender or a cellar-dweller. With RBI Baseball 15, I knew a championship wasn't in the cards after my second at-bat.
