Dungeon/Pick-Up Items
Dungeon and Pick-Up Items
The following items can be found and used in dungeons only, or cannot be added to Link's inventory.
Small Keys
These silver keys are used to open up locked doors. Consult your dungeon map to track down all treasure chests in a dungeon and find all the keys necessary to progress further. Once used, a key becomes worthless. Key locations for each dungeon are noted in the respective walkthroughs and on the maps in this guide.
Dungeon Map
Each dungeon (except the last one) contains one Dungeon Map. Though it is not necessary to complete the dungeon, this map helps to fill in the blanks by displaying rooms you haven't explored yet. Access the dungeon map by pressing D-Pad up. Explored rooms are marked in green, unexplored ones as black. The room you're currently in pulsates green on the map.
Compass
Each dungeon (except the last one) contains one Compass. It is likewise not a required item to finish the dungeons, but it helps as it pinpoints the location of every treasure chest on your map. If you find the Compass before you find the Dungeon Map, chests are still highlighted. In addition to the map legend, the Compass also adds Link's location markers to the on-screen map in the lower left corner. This shows (in yellow) where Link is in respect to the exits and chest(s) in the room as well as through which door he entered (in white).
Big Key
There is one Big Key in each dungeon (except for the last one) and it serves only one purpose: to let you into the final room to battle the boss. The key is kept in a special looking golden treasure chest.
Item Orbs and Power-Ups
Most enemies will leave item orbs behind after they're defeated. These orbs, which contain multiple powers-ups, will change color every second or so. They don't fade away like standard power-ups that are left behind after battles, so you can leave them lying on the ground until you need them. To release the items contained inside an orb, strike or hit it with a weapon (Sword, Boomerang, Hammer, etc). Although most orbs release a variety of power-ups, the color determines the type and frequency of those items. Hit it when it's green and you will receive more rupees, red for more hearts, and yellow for more magic and item refills.
Power-Ups and Collectibles
The following power-ups are found in orbs, stolen from enemies, or taken from pots, boxes and chests:
- Hearts: these small hearts replenish your health.
- Magic Vials: appear in two sizes. Small ones replenish a small amount of magic energy, large ones a large amount.
- Bombs: replenish your available stock of bombs.
- Arrows: replenish your available stock of arrows.
- Fairies: replenish health. Can be caught in bottles.
- Rupees: these gems act as local currency. The different colors designate their value. See Rupees section for more.
- Red Chu Jelly: left behind by ChuChus. Can be used to create Red (health) Potion in Windfall.
- Green Chu Jelly: left behind by ChuChus. Can be used to create Green (magic power) Potion in Windfall.
- Blue Chu Jelly: left behind by the rare Blue ChuChus. Can be used to create Blue (magic power) Potion in Windfall.
- Boko Baba Seeds: from Boko Baba Plants and treasure chests. Can be used to turn into potions in Forest Haven's Hollo's Forest Potion Shop.
- Joy Pendants: from Bokoblins and found in chests/pots. Trade for the Cabana Deed (20) and Hero's Charm (40) on Windfall.
- Knight's Crests: from Darknut knights. Give to 10 to Orca on Outset Island to learn the Hurricane Spin.
- Golden Feathers: from Kargoroks and Peahats and found in chests. Give 20 Golden Feathers to the Rito guard in the Dragon Roost mail station. You will receive a Piece of Heart in the mail.
- Skull Necklaces: from Moblins and inside chests. Give 20 Skull Necklaces to the rich man in Windfall after you have rescued the girls from the Forsaken Fortress to get Treasure Chart #2. You can also give three to the man near the potion shop to play a pig catching challenge.
Boko Stick
Sticks are no longer a "keep-able" item. You can only pick up and use a stick in the room/area you're in -- you can take it with you. Sticks can be used as weapons to hit or throw at enemies and they can be lit and used as torches to see in the dark or set other torches on fire.
Enemy Weapons
In addition to all the above weapons and items, Link can steal weapons from his enemies during combat by knocking them out of their hands. These weapons include the above Boko Sticks, a spiky warclub, a Moblin spear, a scimitar, and a ridiculously oversized Darknut sword that gives new meaning to the word "overkill" when Link holds it.
Like the sticks, these weapons cannot be taken out of the room or are you found them in, but they can be used to attack your foes or overcome certain obstacles that your sword can't cut through. The A Button is used to perform a standard swipe, but press the B Button and Link will throw the weapon at a targeted enemy (or obstacle) at full force. Almost as amusing as seeing Link wield such large weapons is the behavior of his enemies when they frantically search for another weapon to pick up once you've swiped theirs.
List of pick-up weapons:
- Boko Stick
- Machete
- Darknut Sword
- Moblin Spear
- Stalfos Club
- Phantom Ganon's Sword
