Deku Leaf

One of two truly new additions to the Zelda franchise, the Deku Leaf lets you gently float from platform to platform and is essential for reaching far away places. Though it can't be used while you're on your boat, it also has other uses, of course. Use your imagination and you will see what great new gameplay elements this small little leaf unlocks -- or read below.

• Floating:?You can hover across to far away places by using the Deku Leaf while you're in the air. To do this, you'll have to jump off a cliff, table, stone block, or the like and then hit the button in mid-jump. Although you have control over the leaf while in the air, the speed and direction you go into are also dependent on the direction of the wind. It is often necessary to change the wind direction to get to specific spots. The Deku Leaf can also be used to prevent damage from falling from high places. Just jump off a cliff and engage the leaf when you're close to the ground to use it as a make-shift parachute. Remember that using the Deku Leaf for floating depletes your magic gauge, so be sure to cut down bushes or break pots to replenish your energy.
• Fanning: The Deku Leaf doesn't only use wind; it also creates wind! Link can fan it in the air to create a gust of wind that affects both enemies and objects. For example, fan it at a bunch of pots and they will get knocked over. Use it on a burning Bubble skull and the flames will go out. A gust of wind will also stun ChuChus (handy to stop electric ChuChus in their tracks), make seeds roll on the ground, or move poisonous smoke out of the way. The latter can be a frustrating process. Just be sure to fan the leaf multiple times straight ahead, then step forward a little and fan it again. Push the fog back to the sides if it gets too close. If you touch the poisonous smoke, you won't be able to use items or weapons for a few seconds. Finally, the Deku Leaf is an essential element for puzzles in the Wind Temple. Not only can you open swing doors or call in suspended platforms by making small windmill mechanisms spin, you can also use it to create inertia by fanning air into the opposite direction you want to when standing on such a platform or an oversized floating flower.
