D-2: Windfall Island
Windfall Island
Items: Sail, Picto Box, Deluxe Picto Box, Tingle's Map, Cabana Deed, Song of Passing, Hero's Charm (GameCube-only location), Red/Blue/Green Potion, Pieces of Heart (9), Magic Shield, Treasure Charts (10), Empty Bottle, 50 Rupees (Sunken Chest), various Rupees in pots
Requirements: Listed below for each sidequest
Windfall is Wind Waker's biggest town. In addition to shops, a coffee bar, and a lot of inhabitants, there are also quite a few sidequests to be had.
If this is your first time to Windfall, be sure to refer to the Windfall Island walkthrough page to find out how to buy yourself a sail and continue on Link's quest. If you're returning for the second time and the pirate ship is anchored near the bomb shop, refer to the Windfall Island: Pirate Ship part of the walkthrough instead.
Picto Box / Tingle's MAP
Have you gotten the Picto Box, Tingle's Map and Tingle Bottle yet? If not, then go to the door shown in the right picture, up the hill from the village entrance. Inside this room, you will find Tingle, who is locked inside a cell. To let him out, just step on the switch to the left of the door. In the GameCube version, Tingle will give you the Tingle Tuner. With this gadget (and a Game Boy Advance and a GBA/GameCube link cable), a second player can help you out during your quest. The cross-platform mini-game was omitted from the Wind Waker HD edition (and truth to be told didn't work all that well). No matter which version you're playing, you will also get the crude Tingle's Map that tells you how to find Tingle in the future.
Before you exit this area, there is one more item that you can pick up right now. Go into Tingle's cell, pull the crate away from the wall and crawl into the opening. Follow the above map to get through without problems. Beware of the areas of the floor covered with wood (indicated with red on the map). These are trapdoors that land you in the water. When you get to the room all the way to the right, you'll get your hands on the Picto Box.
Song of Passing
Do you have song #6, The Song of Passing, yet? If not, go to the top of the cliff near the Bomb Shop during the night. You will see a dancing fellow, named Tott, dressed somewhat like The King (no, not of Hyrule -- Elvis). Show him your Wind Waker and he will motion a song to you that's not required to finish the game, but very helpful. Play this song: right, left, down. You will now be able to use the Song of Passing to switch from day to night and vice versa.
Note: If playing the GC version, any time of the day will work.
Battlesquid
Play this variation of Battleship and sink all three squids to get a Piece of Heart. The smaller "boats" are often stuck together so don't get confused when you have four hits in a row but you have already sunk the four-part squid. Hit to the sides to make sure. A systematic system that alternates between squares (fire, skip one, fire, skip one, etc). works fairly well.
If you play and win again, you will receive Treasure Chart 7 and thereafter 50 Rupees for each win. If you beat the top record, you will get Treasure Chart 23, and after that, 100 Rupee pieces.
Jump onto the Battlesquid stage and look behind the game board for a few hidden Rupees.
Cabana Deed
Go to the schoolhouse during the day and talk to the teacher. After you're done chatting, exit and talk to the gang of kids outside. The Killer Bees, as the kids call themselves, will hide somewhere in town -- and it's up to you to find them.
The first kid is hiding on top of the tree at the entrance to the town. The trick to getting him down is to roll into the tree (run forward + A). Once the kid's on the ground, he will run away. Follow him and catch up by performing rolls. The second kid is hiding in the back of the Bomb Shop. Float or sidle over there.
The third kid is hiding behind the stone with Tott, the Elvis wannabe, on the cliff. The fourth kid is up on the walkway next to the town gate -- hiding behind a bush. Chase her down and you will have found all the kids.
You will receive a Piece of Heart as reward. Go back to the teacher and talk to her once more. You will receive a Purple Rupee. Go back out and talk to the kids again. The kids will tell you about the teacher's liking for Joy Pendants. They will tell you that you can find one on top of a tree -- but if you've been playing for a while, you should have more than enough by now. Go back into the school and show the teacher a Joy Pendant. She will give you a Red Rupee and tell you that she'd love to have 20 of them.
Give her the 20 pendants. If you don't have that many, search the seas for platforms and steal pendants from Bokoblins (use your Grappling Hook). You will receive the Cabana Deed in exchange. This makes you the rightful owner of the Oasis (and the Oasis will now be named "whatever-your-name-is's Oasis").
Treasure Chart 45 / Hero's Charm
Do you have 40 Joy Pendants (on top of the 20 you gave to the teacher, Miss Marie)? Visit the schoolhouse again and present her with them. If you have more than 40, she'll take those, too.
As a reward, you will receive Treasure Chart 45, which leads to 200 Rupees.
In the GameCube version, the same donation will net you the Hero's Charm. You can equip this mask from the stats screen that shows your weapon, songs, and Triforce pieces. While it's equipped, you can see your enemies' hitpoints. Wii U players can find this item in the Savage Labyrinth on Outset Island.
Potion Shop
The Potion Shop is the first building on the right side after the gate. This is where your Chu Jelly comes in handy. Show the shopkeeper 15 Jellies of one kind (green, red, or blue) and he will create a potion of the corresponding color. Make sure you have an Empty Bottle as he will give you one potion for free. Once created, you can always buy the potion in question in this store.
- Red Potion: restores Link's health
- Green Potion: restores Link's magic energy
- Blue Potion: restores Link's health and magic energy Naturally, finding Blue Chu Jelly is a bit tougher than getting the green or red stuff. Refer to the secrets section for locations of Blue ChuChus.
Get the Swift Sail
After you finish the quest in Dragon Roost Cavern, the Swift Sail will become available in the Auction House of the Wii U version of Wind Waker. See below on how to win it.
Auction
Ownership of the rich man's house in the middle of town changes after your rescue of your sister and the other girls from the Forbidden Fortress. If you enter the house at night, an auction will take place, led by the trader who sold you the sail. Save your game before you start the auction so that you can always revert back.
The auction play mechanics are a little bit like many of the Mario Party mini-games, where you have to buttonmash to fill a meter. The problem here is that you can bid only when your meter is full -- but you have to time it so that you're the one with the highest bid at the end of the auction. The other characters will constantly try to outbid you and the only way to get the prize is to wait until the auctioneer has announced that time is almost up and then do a high bid that startles the rest of the crew. The best way to do this is to have your meter almost full (watch out, it auto-fills slowly as well) toward the end of the auction, then bid around 10% more than everyone else when Zunari announces that the auction will end in five seconds. While everyone is stunned, build up your meter to be almost full again. Just in case someone comes in before the end of the period, get another quick bid in and you'll win.
To win the auction you can use a clever trick: Place a bid 10% higher than the current bid to freeze your opponents for nearly 15 seconds. A good technique is to place a 10% higher bid (e.g. if the current bid is 110, add 10%, or 11 rupees for a bid of 121) at the 30 second mark, then wait for someone to get un-stunned. Mash the button to place another 10% increased bid around the 10 second mark. If you've got quick fingers, another, perhaps even easier solution is to bid up your meter to about the halfway point and just wait. Zunari will say that time is running out. Wait longer. Once he says there are only five seconds left, rapidly tap to fill the meter. Place a bid 10% higher and there's no chance that you'll lose.
Auction prizes are:
- Swift Sail (Wii U only)
- Treasure Chart 18
- Treasure Chart 38
- Joy Pendant
- Piece of Heart.
Make sure you win the sail, charts and the heart piece. Don't bid much on the Joy Pendant since there are plenty around.
Pig Chase
Target the big guy standing close to the Bomb Shop and show him a Skull Necklace. In exchange for three, you get to play the Pig Chase Mini-Game. Try and catch three pigs and bring them back to him in under two minutes, you'll get 50 Rupees. Two of the pigs are usually near the Bomb Shop, close to the beach. The last one is up by Tott on the cliff. To return a pig to the man, simply stand in front of him and hit R/drop. Don't throw the pig or he may not recognize that you've returned it.
Follow the Thief
If you go to Windfall at night after you rescued your sister, you can play stalker. Talk to Mila, the girl wearing rags near the potion shop. She will tell you to go away. Do so and she will try to sneak off. Follow her. Take cover every time she turns around and only follow her when she's not looking, as seen in these pictures:
The first two are easy. But don't be too hasty when following the girl up the wooden ramp. She can spot you off the side if you don't let her get a headstart.
When she's busy working on the safe, approach her cautiously and talk to her.
Answer all her questions with the default answer (you're an honest person, after all) and she will give you an Empty Bottle.
The Windmill
Wait till nightfall (or use the Song of Passing). Climb up the ladder at the back of the windmill to find a switch. Change the wind direction to north and step on the switch. This will activate the windmill.
Go to the front of the building and enter the door. Go upstairs and exit on the back of the windmill. Go up the steps and hop onto one of the platforms attached to the mill's blades. Face the windmill and equip your Fire Arrows. Shoot an arrow into the rotating mechanism to light the torch inside and thus start up Windfall's lighthouse (and activate a hidden treasure chest).
Ride back to the walkway you just went up and talk to the guy with the hat. He will reward you a Piece of Heart for fixing the windmill.
It's easiest to open the treasure chest with the Hookshot. Hop into your boat and sail up to it, then use the Hookshot on the chest to get onto the little isle. Open it to get a Piece of Heart (Silver Rupee, in the Japanese version). If you don't have the Hookshot, use your Deku Leaf to float over to the little isle.
Maggie's Letter
After clearing The Forbidden Fortress for the second time, go to the upper floor of the largest house with the red doors and talk to Maggie, the daughter of the newly rich home owner. She will tell you about her secret correspondence with a Moblin.
Take her letter to the mailbox, then return a day or more later to find the family fighting and the postman in trouble. Go to the coffee shop and talk to the postman. Deliver the letter to Maggie and receive a Piece of Heart.
Skull Necklace Trade
Bring Maggie's father 20 Skull Necklaces to receive the Treasure Chart #2 in return.
Picto Box Quest
Talk to the Lenzo, the photographer, check out his photos upstairs, and show him some pictures of your own, and he will soon sign you on as an apprentice (he will do so once he's standing behind the counter). He will instruct you to take specific pictures.
Make sure your camera isn't full and get the following shots:
1. Snap a shot of the man in red when he sends of a love letter. During the day, follow the man with the moustache who slowly walks down the stairs from the upper portion of Windfall. Don't get close or he will stop. Wait by the mailbox and take a picture of the whole guy (from head to toes) while he is putting the letter in the box. If the letter is already in the box, it's too late.
2. Go to the coffee shop up the stairs. Startle the lone old man in the corner and get his surprised look on camera. You can roll into his table or drop the dishes, but the easiest way is to stand in the spot shown in the picture and toss a pot towards him. Immediately get out your camera and take a picture of the man (don't cut his feet or head off) while he's shaking.
3. Find the girl with the orange dress close to the stairs that lead up to the windmill. Position yourself as shown in the pic above and wait for a guy in green to come along. It'll take a while, don't give up. When the two make eye contact, snap your picture.
Bring each picture to the picto store owner (one by one) and you will be rewarded with an apprenticeship (and a Joy Pendant, in the GameCube version).
Once you have taken all three photos in the Wii U Wind Waker HD, you will receive the Deluxe Picto Box. The benefits of this box are manifold. For one, you can now partake in collecting pictures of characters and turning them into statues in the hidden gallery on Forest Haven. For those characters that you can't photograph because they only appear in cutscenes, you can go to Lenzo and buy the photos for 50 Rupees each. In Wind Waker HD, Lenzo will offer you one of the legendary pictographs for sale for 150 Rupees when you show him the Deluxe Picto Box.
In a throwback to the GameCube-only fetch quest taken out of the Wii U re-release, you can bring a Forest Firefly (in a Bottle) to Lenzo. He will tell you that they used to be needed to produce a color Picto Box and reward you with a Joy Pendant for your trouble.
- Full Moon: Ganondorf
- Almost full (bottom): Great Fairy
- Half (bottom): Jabun
- Small sliver (bottom): Fairy Queen
- Almost full (top): Hyrule King Half (top): Laruto the Zora
- Small sliver (top): Fado
You can also pursue some photo quests involving few people around town.
For example, take a photo of the full moon and bring it (during the day), to the young man sitting on the steps. He will give you Treasure Chart #31 as a reward.
Another easy quest: take a picture of Linda, the lady in orange near the potion shop, then show it to her. She will reward you with Treasure Chart #33.
There's a second quest involving Linda, the woman in the orange dress you photographed earlier. Talk to her and she will ask you to take a picture of herself and show it to the gentleman in green, Anton, who looked at her (he walks in circles around the island). The next day after you have shown him the picture, go to the coffee shop. The couple will be there and reward you with a Piece of Heart.
Secret Room & More Photo Fun
Once you've got the windmill going, climb into a gondola and hop across to the balcony on the second floor of the photo lab. Open the treasure chests to get Treasure Chart #29 and a Purple Rupee (50).
Crawl through the small opening and you will bust in on the photographer meeting with the older lady in orange. Take a picture of them, then take this picture to the two gossiping women. You will receive Treasure Chart #24 as a reward.
Trading Quest
You can also begin the Flower Trade sidequest here.
1. Talk to the trader, Zunari, who sold you the sail on your first visit to Windfall. It is important that you talk to him at the left counter, not from the side. Talk to him until he gives you the Town Flower.
2. Travel to Bomb Island (F-5), north of Forest Haven. Trade the flower with the Goron for a Sea Flower (and 20 Rupees). Flowers are stored in the Delivery Bag, in case you're lost.
3. Take this flower to Greatfish Isle (B-4) (you can warp directly to that island if you have the Ballad of Gales) and show it to the Goron trader there. The Goron will give you an Exotic Flower in return for 25 Rupees.
4. You can now travel back to Windfall and get your reward for supplying the shopkeeper with three different types of plants. Talk to him over the left counter and you will receive the Magic Shield as recognition.
But the trade quest continues. If you want to get your hands on some unique (but ultimately useless) items and get a nice prize in return, follow this course, always trading the last item you got:
- Travel to Bomb Isle (F-5), north of Forest Haven. Trade the Exotic Flower you got during the previous trading quest for a Sickle Moon Flag.
- Back to Greatfish Isle to trade the flagpole for a Fountain Idol.
- Mother & Child Isles (remember to sail -- you cannot warp to Child Isle) for a Big Sale Flag.
- Go to Bomb Isle. Get the Hero's Flag for 75 Rupees.
- Greatfish Isle. You get a Postman Statue for 100 Rupees.
- Mother & Child Isles. A high 200 Rupees gets you the Shop Guru Statue.
- Greatfish Isle. Show the golden statue to the Goron.
You will receive a Piece of Heart (and of mind, since this rather drawn-out quest is now over).
Note that you can now buy all the above items at Windfall's now much expanded trading outpost. There are also three other items that weren't necessary in this quest but that you can trade for. Any of these items can be placed around town or on your island (in the designated round slots only, of course).
This table explains what items you receive in what location for your trade (left column).
Item | Bomb Island Trade | Greatfish Isle Trade | Mother & Child Isles Trade |
Town Flower | Sea Flower | Sea Flower | Sea Flower |
Sea Flower | Town Flower | Exotic Flower | Town Flower |

Big Catch Flag | Fountain Idol | Fountain Idol | Sickle Moon Flag |
Postman Statue | Fountain Idol | Fountain Idol | Shop Guru Statue |
Shop Guru Statue | Postman Statue | Piece of Heart | Postman Statue |
Decorate Windfall
You can place any items you received in the above trading quest (or bought from Zunari) into the empty sockets that you see all over the town. There are 14 plants, flags, or statues to be placed. When you're done, talk to the man sitting on the bench to get a Piece of Heart.
If you've got a Postman or Shop Guru Statue to spare, place at least one of them on the town gate, then talk to the guy in yellow and blue to get some Rupees in return.
Tingle Quest
If you're playing the GameCube version and you've got a Game Boy Advance [with no game cartridge inserted] hooked up to your GameCube (using a GBA Link Cable), you can call Tingle (equip the Tingle Tuner and hit the button you assigned it to) and play a small scavenger hunt with him. He will ask you to do the following this:
- Stand in front of the post box: Do as he says (the GBA player has to press the A button)
- Find the first bench: It's on the right side of Windfall main street near the Potion shop
- Find the second bench: left of the Café, looking out at the ocean.
- Find the third bench: near the school and Lenzo's photo atelier.
- Plant a bomb in front of the jail: simply stand in front of the door leading to the room you found Tingle in (but don't enter) and have Tingle put down a Bomb. Your reward for all the running is 20 Rupees (and a bit of respect from Tingle).
Think Tingle's prices are too high? Use the Deku Leaf to float to the striped awning of the school from the Windmill walkway and Tingle will drop the price of on the Tingle Ballon, Shield, and Koloo-limpah by 10 Rupees.
Sunken Treasure Chest
There is a sunken chest to the south-east of Windfall Island. You can find it with Treasure Chart 18. In the Wii U version it contains 50 Rupees, in the GameCube version it only yields a single Rupee. The chart can be bought at the Auction House.
