Bring Magic Powder!
If you're out of Magic Powder, make sure to go pick up a Toadstool where you first found one in the Mysterious Forest. Then, bring it back to the Witch in Koholint Prarie for more Magic Power - you'll need it for the trials ahead!
Arriving from the Gopongo Swamp, Link entered Bottle Grotto. Tempted immediately by the chest, Link, try as he might, could not get to it. The pots were too heavy (for now!). Defeated, Link continued deeper into the dungeon.
How to Light Torches in Bottle Grotto
The next room was dimly lit, only by the circling enemy. Link stepped up to the platform ahead of him, and used Magic Powder on the torches to light them. If you stand directly in between them, you can light both torches with one use of Magic Powder.
This opened the door to the right.
Get Small Key 1
In the next room, two skeletons accosted Link. The yellow one was easy enough to take out. Avoiding it as it jumped, Link struck after it landed. The white one, which jumped back if approached, was expertly cornered against the wall where it could not escape.
Defeating both skeletons caused the first Small Key to drop from the ceiling, which Link used to open the door to the south in this room.
Get Compass
advertisement
In this room, an odd enemy (a Shy Guy) faced Link. It seemed to follow Link's every move, but hurt Link if he touched it.
Back up into the Shy Guy while charging your Sword by holding B. Unleash it when you're ALMOST touching the back of the Shy Guy to take it down.
Carefully studying its movements, Link discovered the weird creature mirrored his own movements - leading him to back up against it, unleashing a spin of his Sword to destroy it.
This made a chest appear with the Compass inside. Prize in hand, Link left the room, then made a right to a room he hadn't visited just yet.
Get Small Key 2
link= There was a lot to take in in the next room, but Link remained focused. He struck the crystal in the center with his Sword, then headed south. There, another crystal looked unreachable; however, Link was able to reach it when he swung his sword, triggering it, causing the floor obstacles to lower.
This allowed Link to collect the second small key.
From here, Link continued to the right.
Get Small Key 3
In the next room, Link's path was blocked by pits; but with the Roc's Feather in hand, Link swiftly jumped over the gaps to the button on the other side, beside the crystal.

This caused a chest with the third key to appear. Link ignored the Crystal, opened the chest and headed north.
Get Small Key 4
Again, Link encountered odd Shy Guys that mirrored his movements. Trusting himself, he turned away from them, charged his Sword, and backed up. He unleashed his sword's spin attack as he felt the fiends close behind him.
This caused the fourth small key to appear to the left of a barricade! Retracing his steps, Link made it back to the first room with a crystal switch - knowing to hit the crystals if he found his path to be blocked.
He then made a right to get to the small key he had just seen drop.
From here, Link went all the way back to the left, through the first room with the torches activated by Magic Powder, and unlocked the door leading to the west.
Get the Stone Beak
Link was immediately bombarded by sliding blade traps and bats in the next room, but instinctively raised his Shield in defense. Timing it right, snuck past the blades, and defeated the bats. This opened the north door, which Link took.
In this next room, a Hardhat Beetle blocked Link from safely jumping the gap; however, Link cleverly lead the enemy to the left, then quickly ran to the right and jumped the gap before the beetle could block his way.
Strategically positioned, Link pushed the beetle into the abyss with his shield. Opening the chest, Link found the Stone Beak, then returned from whence he came.

Deeper into the Dungeon
Link continued to all the way back to the right, through the rooms with crystal switches, to the last locked door.
In the next room, Link killed the bats, but curiously, nothing happened. With no where else to go, Link pondered for a moment, then pushed the blocks in the center of the room together. This caused a secret stairway to appear!
Heading down the stairs brought Link to an area with a platform that moved over a dangerous spiked floor. Carefully, he timed his jumps (fueled by the Roc's Feather) for when the platforms moved closest to him, and made it to the other side.
In the next room, Link quickly jumped to the center platform to avoid the patrolling flame enemy, killed the bat, collected the floating hearts by jumping below it, then continued north.
Sub Boss: Hinox
In the next room, Link was surprised to be attacked by a towering Hinox, a type of one-eyed ogre.
Link swiftly ran toward it to initiate the attack, and was able to get a swipe or two in before needing to back up. The Hinox bombarded Link with strong attacks, including charges that ended in the Hinox picking Link up and throwing him, or launching literal bombs at him.
Unfortunately for Link, he learned the hard way the Shield was no match versus the giant. But, quick-witted and quick on his feet, Link avoided the Hinox by continuously moving, and running perpendicular to the Hinox's path as soon as he saw it coming. This allowed him to turn around and attack the Hinox as it regained its balance from its failed attack.

Hinox Boss Tips:
- Watch out for the bombs he throws.
- Don't bother using the Shield - it won't work!
- Keep moving - the cracked blocks will support Link's weight, but not if you stop on them.
- As soon as the Hinox starts a charge, turn perpendicular to the direction it's heading to avoid it.
- Basically, for example, if it's running hard right =>, you should run hard north ^ or south v to avoid it.
- Once the Hinox misses you, immediately turn around to get a few attacks in.
- Rinse and repeat until dead!
Once Link felled the foul Hinox, a fairy appeared to heal his wounds, along with a portal that conveniently teleported him back to the entrance if needed. Feeling energetic, Link continued deep into the dungeon by taking the door to the right.
Get the Map
Link continued deeper into the dungeon, jumping over the pits with the Roc's Feather in the next room. Next, he encountered a room with an odd purple enemy that pulled him toward it.
Avoiding the gravitational tug and the bats, Link made his way to the chest in this room and acquired the map. Carefully, he continued north.
Keep moving to avoid the gravitational pull in this room!
Get the Power Bracelet
In the next room, Link found 20 rupees in the chest, and jumped up to reach more Magic Powder. When he was ready, he opened the locked door to the left.
Once inside, Link was enveloped in darkness, haunted by two ghosts. Unable to touch--or damage--their ethereal forms, he quickly ran to the torches and lit them with Magic Powder.
advertisement
The brightness scared the ghosts away, causing a chest to appear. Upon opening it, Link found the Power Bracelet!
The Power Bracelet allows Link to lift and move heavy objects, like pots and stones! It's automatically equipped, so don't worry about setting it to a slot.
Get Small Key 5
Returning to the room Link found the 20 rupees, he found he could now lift the pots blocking his way.
He lifted and tossed the pots away that blocked his path by the open treasure chest, then continued over the orange tiles. Once he reached the Crystal, Link struck it, moved onto the raised blue platform, then struck it again. Link hopped off the raised platform and claimed his prize inside the chest - the final small key.
Get Nightmare Key
To get past the orange platforms ahead, Link turned around and struck the crystal yet again, lowering them.
He then took open the path south, where an imprisoned Pols Voice, skeletal Stalfos, and keese resided. Defeating them haphazardly lead to no results, but found defeating them in this particular order caused a chest to appear.
The rabbit-like Pols Voice took no damage from Link's sword. Instead, Link lifted the pots with his newfound strength and threw them on the fiends, crushing them.
1. Move the blocks to free the Pols Voice (rabbit enemy) and kill it by throwing a pot at it.
advertisement
2. Defeat the Keese with your Sword.
3. Defeat the skeletal Stalfos with your Sword.
This caused the chest with the Nightmare Key to appear!
The stairs here simply led Link to a side-scrolling area with Goomba and Piranha Plants. On the other side, Link would emerge in front of an Owl statue, which would tell him the order in which to defeat the enemies. Don't bother going through here - it's a waste when you already know the correct order!
Nightmare Key in hand, Link returned to the previous room, then opened the locked door to the right.
Get to the Nightmare Room
In the room behind the locked door to the right, Link found many pots and a few enemies. Defeating all the enemies here revealed a secret stairway, which he took.
The next passageway was smooth sailing until Link stood on a platform that refused to move, sneering at him.
He descended the nearby ladder and picked up the pot on the floor beside it, brining it to the sneering platform with him. With his weight combined with the platform, it finally lowered, allowing Link to continue.
In the next room, Link eagerly hopped to the large door with the giant key hole, and entered with the Nightmare Key.

Bottle Grotto Boss Fight - Genie
A literal Genie in a bottle awaited Link on the other side of the Nightmare door. It heartily laughed at Link, mocking that his Sword was too brittle to break his strong pot.
The Genie was right. Link's sword did little more than knock the Genie's pot over.
But Link, brimming with strength from the Power Bracelet, hoisted the pot--Genie and all--into the air and tossed it at the wall. Only a crack appeared, but Link now knew this was how he must unarm the Genie.
After knocking the Genie's pot over and tossing it at the wall a few times more, the Genie's protective vase completely broke! Angry, the Genie seemingly split in two translucent versions of itself and violently circled the room. Link couldn't harm the ghoulish fiend while it was in this state, so he patiently waited for it to reform.
If Link was lucky, he could swipe at the Genie with his Sword RIGHT as it reformed. But if luck wasn't on his side, Link had to dextrously avoid the fire ball the Genie cast, and then get in a sly attack while the Genie angrily pummeled in front of himself.
After a few rounds of this routine, the Genie finally succumbed to Link's sword, defeated.
Genie Boss Fight Tips

- You may find dodging the Genie's Fire Balls by jumping with the Roc's Feather.
- Also, never run toward the Genie while avoiding its Fire Balls.
- Attack the Genie while it's inside its bottle immediately to stun it, and don't let it touch you!
- You must throw the pot at the wall three times to destroy it.
Get the Conch Horn
After defeating the Genie, Link was awarded with the next instrument: The Conch Horn!
Go east to Ukuku Prarie, and eventually, to Kanalet Castle to find a way to Key Castle.

1993 Link's Awakening Bottle Grotto Walkthrough
Upon entering the dungeon, you'll see a chest. Skip it and go up. Light the two torches with magic powder. This should open a door to your right. Go through it and kill all the enemies in the room to receive a?key. Go down a screen. To kill this enemy charge your sword while facing away from it. Walk towards it(again while not facing it), and then release your charged sword. Open the chest to obtain the?Compass.
After opening the chest go a screen north, then a screen right. Hit the switch and go south a screen. Kill the enemy and hit the switch at an angle with your sword. A chest should appear containg another key. Take it and go right. Use Roc's Feather to jump over the pit and step on the button. Another chest appears containing another?key. Take it and hit the switch in the room. Go up a screen and kill all the enemies there. A key will appear on the other side of the baracades.? From there go down, left, up, then right, hitting switches along the way, to get the key. In this room get the?key?and go left three times and open the locked door. There, light the torches with magic powder and a chest will appear containg the?map.
Go up a screen and knock the enemy into the pit. A chest will appear. Take the item from the chest and from here go down a screen, right three times, down a screen, right, up, then right again. After dealing with the enemies, go up one screen. Here, push the two blocks in the middle of the room together and kill the bats. Go down the stairs and work your way back up. In this room watch out for the bat and whatever that thing is that goes around the room. My suggestion is to jump into the middle of the room where the floating heart is. Finally go up one screen to face Hinox.

sub boss: hinox ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ??
All of his attacks cause one heart damage. Attacks include him tossing bombs at you and his charge/grab attack. His bombs are rather basic and easy to dodge, his charging can be seen when he starts "dancing". If you see that, just get as far away from him as you can.
After the battle, a teleport to the entrance appears. Now, head right and jump over the pits. Then, go up and open the treasure chest containing a?Stone Fragment. Continue going north, then head left. Light all the torches in the room and kill the ghosts. Open the chest to retrieve the Power Bracelet. This allows you to pick up objects such as pots. If you want you can backtrack to the beginning of the dungeon to obtain some rupees (that chest). Otherwise, head right and throw the pots out of your way in the upper right corner. Walk up to the switch and hit it, then walk up to the downed blue block and hit the swtich again. Now you can open the chest containing a?key.
Before you head right, hit the switch one more time while standing on the downed blue blocks. Feel free to slash the enemy into the pit. Go right again and hit the switch. Head down and push the blocks so you can reach the bunny looking enemy. You MUST kill the enemies in the order. 1)bunny thing by a pot 2)then bat by sword 3) lastly blue enemy by sword. This reveals a chest. Open it and obtain the?Nightmare Key. Go up, then unlock the door to the right. Kill everyone in the room and stairs will open. Go down the stairs and in the second screen, use the pot to go down the platform. ?Once up the stairs enter the boss room.
Boss: Genie ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ??
Before you fight make sure you have your sword and power bracelet equipped. First phase, just dodge his fireballs by constantly moviing left to right. When he hides in his bottle whack it with your sword until it stops moving. Now pick it up and toss it. After three tosses, the pot should break. Now all that's left is to defeat the genie itself. Simply slash him and dodge his fireballs. Eventually he'll go down.?
After the battle, collect the?Heart Container and go right and the?Conch Horn is yours.
