How to Shield Surf
Looking for How to Shield Surf from Tears of the Kingdom? See our latest guide.
In the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Link is able to use his equipped shield as a makeshift surfboard and move down sloping terrain at faster speeds.
Shield Surfing is an effective way to travel over great distances without the use of a horse, so long as you have downward hills to descend, and a durable shield.

To Shield Surf, you must have a shield equipped, and are preferably near downward sloping terrain. While running, press the Jump Button (X) and then while in mid-jump, tap the Shield Parry Button (A) to do a flip while putting your shield at your feet.
This allows you to gain more momentum while sliding down inclines, until you come to a stop or hit an upward slope - at which point Link will automatically stop Shield Surfing. Note that while surfing, Link can use his bow to shoot arrows, or do a spinning attack with the Attack Button - but this will lower his speed.
It is also important to note that any amount of Shield Surfing will decrease the durability or your currently equipped shield. If the shield you are surfing on breaks - Link will stumble and roll down the hill, taking damage from the fall. However, Shield Surfing on snow or sand will not lower shield durability at all, while shield surfing on rocky terrain will quickly eat up durability.
