Postgame Boss Guide
After beating Super Mario RPG, there’s a whole host of postgame bosses for you to challenge. While Culex, the 2D monster in Monstro Town can be fought any time after reaching that area, the rest of these bosses need a cleared game save– a file with a star next to it that means you beat the game.
While you’ll get a quick explanation from Toad that you “dreamed” the ending of the game and it will put you in a game state right before the final boss, this cleared save is still necessary to access the special postgame. Let’s take a look at how to fight them right now.
In the same conversation with Toad when he tells you that you dreamed the Smithy encounter, he’ll mention that you get a free stay at the Marrymore Hotel.
Go ahead and fast travel there in the Moleville region. Head to the inn in the northwest, and speak to the clerk to stay the night. After fishing for a tip (we should really pay our service workers more), the bellhop will leave and you can turn the light off to go to bed.
After falling asleep, Geno will stargaze a bit, and let you know that you should head to Star Hill. Fast travel there, and then go inside the topmost star on the first screen to get another quick cutscene. Touch all the star flowers again and head to the next area.
This time, Geno will comment on the new pink star on the ground, mention that there are more around Star Hill, and then recommend you go talk to the Frog Sage. Go ahead and check out the pink stars as they’re clues to the endgame bosses (such as someone’s throat being scratchy), or go talk to the Frog Sage in between every fight as he’ll give you a more explicit clue of where to go. This is optional of course, but if you want to save time, it’s easier than trying to intuit where to go from each clue.
After defeating each postgame boss, you can return to the Frog Sage if you like to get a hint on where to go, or you could just follow this guide! You can fight some these bosses out of order, but we recommend you take them on in the order listed:
