5th Star Piece - Sunken Ship and Land's End Walkthrough
In the Fifth Chapter of Mario’s new adventure in Super Mario RPG Remake, we’ll be heading to Seaside Town to locate the next Star Piece in a Sunken Ship, and then make our way through Land's End to Monstro Town and beyond.
Seaside Town
Entering Seaside Town, you'll find that the residents are are a bit... odd. The pale blue Toads act very strangely, won't let you into certain buildings, stand on desks and tables, but at least let you stay at the Inn for free!
There are multiple rows of shops here, but only the far left one seems to actually sell anything - the others are all inhabited by strange Toads that mention a ship they want you to visit.

Poison Mushroom | 30 Coins |
Fright Bomb | 100 Coins |
Fire Bomb | 200 Coins |
Ice Bomb | 250 Coins |
To get to the bottom of things, head up to the far north of town up the stairs to the Elder's House. He wants you to find the fallen Star Piece that is located in the ocean, on a pirate ship and held by someone called Johnathon Jones.
Upstairs, you can find a frog from Tadpole Pond who has his own Frog Coin Emporium, offering a few interesting wares in exchange for Frog Coins:
Frog Coin Emporium | |||
---|---|---|---|
Items | Accessories | ||
See Ya | 10 Frog Coins | Exp. Booster | 22 Frog Coins |
Earlier Times | 15 Frog Coins | Coin Trick | 36 Frog Coins |
Flower Ring | 50 Frog Coins |
The items are are quite pricey, but you should have accumulated a fair amount of Frog Coins here, and there will be more you can farm later. In particular the Accessories are worth saving up for, as the Exp. Booster can help bring your team closer to the same level if shared around, while the Coin Trick doubles money earned from battle, and the Flower Ring cuts your FP use in half that helps a ton in long boss fights.
With nothing else to to here, take the southern exit back out of Seaside Town, and head for the ocean.

At the ocean's shore, you'll arrive in a cave system leading to your objective where a pirate ship lies somewhere out at sea. Luckily, the first large room you come into has a friendly Shaman running a shop that's the prefect place to prepare for the battles to come:
Coastal Shop | |||||

Cleansing Juice | 4 Coins | Hurly Glove (Bowser) | 92 Coins | Sailor Dress (Peach) | 50 Coins |
Party Cleanse | 50 Coins |
If you got the secret weapon for Mario in Booster Tower, you shouldn't need to swap out for a new weapon, but you can at least put down money to get the Hand Gun for Geno, and the Hurly Glove for Bowser so he can toss Mario at enemies! Similarly, be sure to pick up better armor for everyone, including the Sailor Shirt for Mario, Sailor Pants for Mallow, Sailor Cape for Geno, and Sailor Dress for Peach. as for general items, grab some Party Cleanses especially if you might be subbing Peach out, and make sure you have a decent amount of Mushrooms and Syrups.
There are two exits out of the room, and you can dip into the room past the Shaman to find a Save Point, then take the lower path below the Coastal Shop.
In the next area, you'll find a row of crates leading to a path lined with Zeostar enemies, and a Treasure Chest with a Super Star in the bottom left corner. Drop down and get it, then quickly run through as many enemies as you can before moving down to the left past the chest.
There will be more Zeostars here, but you may not have time to defeat them all before the star's effects wear off. If you run into battle with them, be aware that they can heal themselves and allies like the Bloopers they often show up alongside. They can burrow and pop up close to attack so be ready for that or ink blasts from afar.
After moving through the second room full of Zeostars, be sure to check a passage up to the north first.
This room leads back to the Save Point by the Coastal Shop, and you can also find three Treasure Chests here with a Mushroom, Flower, and Frog Coin.
Head back to the second Zeostar room and move west through to another area. Here you'll find a pool of water to the south, and a whirlpool that can transport you down to the bottom of the pool. Once down, walk around and go through a submerged cave opening on the right.
This will lead to a small chamber with another whirlpool to take back up, leading to a platform above where you just were that holds a Treasure Chest with a Max Mushroom.
Continue down the passage until you reach a shoreline with more water to swim through. Some Bloopers here guard the waters with Mr. Kipper fish, but both are weak to lightning and fire, which Mario or Mallow can provide to eliminate them easily.
Note that the whirlpools here lead down to the sandy floor below, while small shells with bubbles streaming out can bring you back to the surface. Off to the west, a sunken ship looms large, and you can jump onto the warp pipe once traversing the seafloor to enter the next area.

Arriving in the Sunken Ship, you can spot two doors in the cargo room, along with a note in the top corner that mentions a giant squid taking hold of the ship. You can check the room to the right for a Save Point along with a second note that mentions the squid was trapped in the treasure cellar, and then head through the top left door.
In the next room you'll find the cargo hold swarming with undead Greapers, who are often joined by Straw Heads and large powerful Reachers.
Each of them are strong contenders in their own right, as Greapers can teleport to you and unleash quick Fear Sickle attacks that terrify or shoot lightning orbs, blizzards, and crystals from afar, while the Reacher can deal a lot of damage with bone tosses, or sing Elegies to stifle your abilities.
Luckily, most all enemies in the Sunken Ship are weak to lightning, making Mallow a huge boon to bring along. You should also stockpile Pure Water that's dropped by enemies like Greapers, as it can be used to instantly defeat any undead, especially the more powerful Special Enemies that might appear.
A note along this room mentions that the treasure hold is locked by a six letter password that has several hints, and soon we'll have to uncover those hints, so head past the Greapers into the next room.
Here you'll find a brand new enemy on the floor that will rise to life if you interact - the Dry Bones. These undead enemies actually have 0 HP, but cannot be damaged by normal attacks.
Instead, use any type of damaging ability on them, and they'll be defeated (and often give Pure Waters). However, their body outside of battle will only crumble momentarily, so don't waste time trying to clear the room or you'll be fighting them forever! You can check out another note about the hints here, and then move on.
As you find a stairway down into the lower rooms, dodge the poisonous Alley Rats that scurry up and down the stairs, and you can find a Treasure Chest at the bottom on top of a column of crates that holds 10 Coins.
This next area has six different puzzling rooms, each guarded by a Greaper, and each containing a treasure and note that helps solve the riddle of the 6-letter word needed to access the Treasure Vault:
- The first door leads to a room with a floating green?! switch below a large stack of crates with a cannonball on top. A Paratrooper will fly high above, and always be moving towards you. You can run to the back of the room, let him follow, then run to the opposite side of the crates to force him to knock the cannonball onto the switch. This will reveal a Mushroom and the clue "There is an 's' in the word."
- The second door has 3 floating J blocks and 3 moving springboards on the platform above with a green?! switch at the far right side. You'll need to jump and hit each J block to stop the springboards so they are evenly spaced near the middle of their paths, so that a cannonball can be bounced between them to reach the switch (try and stop them at about the same position as the J blocks). When successful, a Flower will appear along with the clue "It is found on the bed of the ocean."
- The third door is comprised of a difficult maze of crates that can be hard to spot Mario in as you move around inside. To reach the top of the maze, enter and run back straight and left. Then, run up and right and jump when you feel yourself hitting a wall. Jump up right (only once) then jump down to the left and continue down left until you see Mario on the first raised platform. Run along the outer edge to the top right corner and re-enter. From here, run down to the left, and where you hit a wall to drop down. Next, Run to the far left, then jump up left three times. Head a bit down to the right, then up right, and jump up left to see yourself in the top corner hole. Jump up left to reach the?! switch, and you'll get a Royal Syrup and a clue "It has two vowels".
When heading down to the lower level of clue rooms, be sure to duck under some crates near a Dry Bones to get a Treasure Chest holding 100 Coins! You can also find the Shaman from the Coastal Store here, selling the same things as before, which makes a good place to re-supply if you're low on consumables. The shaman even has his own freebie clue "The password's got something to do with... the sea."
- The fourth door will quickly reveal a floating Coin that winds its way around the room and crates while creating a trail of Coins for you to follow. Be sure to follow quickly, but do not grab the moving Coin, or the trail will stop. So long as you grab every single Coin and then the moving one when it finally stops, you'll solve the puzzle to get 160 Coins, plus the clue "It is very valuable."
- The fifth door has another set of floating J blocks, with cannons aimed at each of them, and one lower J block to hit first. This will start a chain reaction of cannonballs that will go under the J blocks, but if you quickly run under them, you can jump up to hit the cannonball into each J block. Get all three in one go, and you'll be awarded a Mushroom Item and the clue "It is actually a They."
- The sixth door at the end of the lower hall leads to a Save Point, but has one last puzzle with two green?! switches. Look to the far right for a stack of barrels -- including one slightly off-color one on the top row. Step on it to make it fall down, then keep jumping on it until it hits one green?! switch, and step on the other to get a Mushroom and the final clue "The R comes before the L".
With all the clues assembled, head into the next room that has 6 floating J blocks that will indicate each of the 6 Key Letters numbered 1 through 6 to spell out the password (jumping will cycle through a list of letters). If you complete the password, you can interact with the large speaker tube to say what you have offered.
Knowing that the password is the plural of something valuable that comes from the ocean bead with two vowels and the letter R followed by the letter L, you can deduce that the passcode is "Pearls"
Enter in each of the letters on the blocks and then interact with the mouthpiece to be let in by the mighty squid that was trapped in the Treasure Hold!
Boss Battle - King Calamari and Tentacles
Boss - King Calamari / Left Tentacle / Right Tentacle | |||
---|---|---|---|
HP | 800 / 200 / 260 | Weak Elements | Fire |
EXP | 100 | Weak Statuses | N/A / Fear, Poison |
Coins | 34 | Drops | N/A |
- Recommend Level: 12
- Recommended Party: Mario, Peach, Geno
- Recommended Accessories: Fearless Pin (Mario), Zoom Shoes (Geno) Wake-Up Pin (Peach)
When you enter the next room, you'll be attacked by a group of three Tentacles, and each will have either 200 or 260 HP a piece. Since all of the enemies for this boss are weak to fire, you'll ideally want Mario taking the lead with his Super Fireball to quickly whittle down each tentacle. Geno is a great support here, as you can use Geno Boost to power Mario and himself up before he focuses on timed regular attacks.
Aside from their quick slap attacks, the most annoying part of the fight is that the Tentacles will routinely grab one of your characters and then toss them up in the air. While it won't do any damage on its own, it will take them out of the fight for a bit and leave them with the Fear status effect on their return.
Geno's Boost can still help counter this, but having Peach as your dedicated healer will also help a ton for her Therapy and Group Hug's timed ability to get rid of status effects as well, making her a great choice.
This battle will have you take on two groups of three Tentacles each, before you finally reach King Calamari the Squid Boss along with a Left Tentacle and Right Tentacle.
While his tentacles will continue to grab and toss your characters about, the King can also use the unblockable Pain Spout attack, a single target Ink Blast, plus a hard to anticipate regular attack where his main tentacles constrict back before pushing forward.
With the amount of damage Mario can dish out with his Super Fireball powered by Geno's Boost, you should be able to take down King Calamari himself in just a few hits, while Peach keeps the fear effect off the team, and the tentacles will go down when the king does.
When you arrive at the other end of the Treasure Hold, continue into the next small room with a Dry Bones by a door, and some crates leading up to a second floor with a cannon. Ignore the bottom floor, since that's just an exit for if you fall down in the next room.
Speaking of which, be prepared to do some dodging in the next big room. There are two sets of three cannons all firing bullet bills, and the cannons are manned by a group of Alley Rats. If you get hit by the bullets, they'll push you into the lower pit forcing you to start over again, so you have two choices: Move fast and carefully to avoid the bullets, or jump along the wall over the cannons and fight off the Alley Rats blocking your way.
Whichever strategy you use, head through the far door leading to another stairway full of Alley Rats to dodge or take on. These guy will usually be helped by Enigmax, a type of enemy you first encountered in the Mole Mines. They fight much the same, but can also use a Will-O-Wisp attack to send a bolt into the ground to appear in a column of light around your character, requiring you to block before the orb shoots upward.
In the room beyond, there's a large section of crates on the right path with a hole through them, but don't be fooled because an Alley Rat lurks here as well as on the path outside the crates. Once you reach the far side, head to the north corner with a pile of barrels to jump on, then jump back to the large stash of crates to find two Treasure Chests holding a total of 200 Coins!
Hidden Treasure Chest 23
Partway into the Sunken Ship area, you'll enter a side passage that features a copy of Mario who will mimic your movements. Move to the exact center of the room with the copy (don't interact with it), and jump up to reveal a J block that also reveals the Hidden Treasure Chest up and to the left. To reach it, you'll need to move against the wall and jump until you can jump above the copy, land on the Copy Mario's head, and jump off it to reach the Hidden Treasure that holds a Kerokero Cola.
On the other side of the room with the hidden treasure chest, dodge around Dry Bones to enter the next area. There's more Dry Bones here, plus one hiding against the north wall behind a stack of crates. Move past him along the back of the row of crates, and you can find a secret door against the back wall.
Inside, open the Treasure Chest for a Frog Coin.
Head downstairs in the previous room to find a Save Point along with a Treasure Chest holding a Mushroom, and then hop over the crates to the far northeast side of the room with another Treasure Chest that is actually another Mimic!
Like the enemy in the Kero Sewers, the Wuhoh is a very durable and powerful enemy that is only weak to Mario's jump attacks. Set Mario to work with his Super Jump, but be ready for Wuhoh to have a few tricks of his own. Along with being able to attack via a Piranha Plant within him, the chest can also release hordes of Mini Goombas, making it a good idea to have Bowser Terrorize them so they don't deal too much damage while you focus on the Wuhoh. You'll get a ton of Coins for defeating him, and also get the Safety Badge, which is great to put on Mallow or Peach!
In the room beyond, you'll find a pool of water filled with Mr. Kippers and 4 Frog Coins, but you need to cross over to the adjacent room to find a Whirlpool to take you down so you can enter this underwater area.
Once you've collected the coins, look for an opposite door in the previous whirlpool room to head northeast, and you'll have to make your way through a long submerged stairway filled with Zeostars and other enemies.
When you reach the room beyond the stairs, you'll be in a flooded storage room full of barrels, and a lone Blooper and its kin floating about. Take it on if you wish, then be sure to jump to the northern pile of barrels where there's a lighter spot in the back corner, and fall down behind the pile to reach a door.
Inside you'll find a Treasure Chest holding a Safety Ring - another good accessory for healers in tough battles against powerful bosses.
Return to the previous room and jump on the eastern pile of barrels to reach a high ledge and get out of the water to a door leading further on.
You'll stumble into a room full of angry pirate sharks known as Bandana Reds. They'll gang up and attack you, but their low health pool means a good timed hit from Mallow's Thunderbolt or Bowser's Poison Gas can usually take them down quick.
As they run away, grab the Treasure Chest with a Mushroom nearby, then head up the stairs to watch their botched ambush in progress.
An even bigger group of the sharks will attack you at the top of the stairs, and you may need to watch out for their two different attack animations - a straight jab, or a Skewer that has them spin their spear about before attacking.
Once the second group is defeated, you can enter the Captain's Cabin to find Jonathon Jones, and challenge him for the Star Piece.
Boss Battle - Jonathon Jones
Boss - Jonathon Jones / Bandana Blue (x4) | |||
---|---|---|---|
HP | 820 / 150 | Weak Elements | N/A / Fire, Lightning |
EXP | 90 / 20 | Weak Statuses | Fear, Poison, Mute |
Coins | 50 | Drops | N/A |
- Recommend Level: 13
- Recommended Party: Mario, Peach, Bower
- Recommended Accessories: Any
This fight is a pretty straightforward one at first, with one little wrinkle that you have a chance to avoid. To start, Mario should focus entirely on Jonathon Jones, using Super Fireballs or regular timed attacks if you need to conserve FP.
Meanwhile, have Bowser focus on defeating the Bandana Blues by Terrorizing them and then using timed regular hits, with Peach assisting and/or healing as needed.
The Bandana Blues aren't a huge threat, though their repeated stabs can get annoying if you leave them alive for too long, but one you get their pattern down, blocking them will get a lot easier.
Jonathon Jones on the other hand has a strong poke, and can boost his defenses as well to reduce incoming damage.
If you want an added challenge, know that defeating all the Bandana Blue enemies will prompt Jonathon Jones to single out Mario for a 1v1 Duel, putting the rest of your party on the sideline for the rest of the battle. He can now use a Fire Saber attack that you need to block after the beam of light wiggles twice before slicing in a circle.
If you aren't feeling up to the 1v1 challenge, simply make sure that Bowser and Peach don't defeat the fourth Bandana Blue, and the duel won't trigger at all!
With Mr Jones defeated, he'll bestow upon you the Fifth Star Piece as a token of the fight, allowing you to leave and head back to Seaside Town. In Super Mario RPG Remake, the color of this Star Piece is pink -- it is blue in in the original game.
Upon your return to the town, the creepy residents will rush back to meet you and demand you hand over the Star Piece. As it turns out, they were all members of the Smithy Gang. However, if you refuse, they will show they mean business by torturing the real Elder... with tickles.
Relent and hand over the Star Piece, and the group will flee to the Northwest. Save at the Save Point in the Inn, and head up past the Elder's Home to give chase.
While waiting for their exfiltration, their exit will be blocked by Jonathon Jones, who will see to it that you have the chance for some payback!
Boss Battle - Speardovich
Boss - Speardovich | |||
---|---|---|---|
HP | 1500 | Weak Elements | Lightning |
EXP | 120 | Weak Statuses | N/A |
Coins | 50 | Drops | N/A |
- Recommend Level: 14
- Recommended Party: Mario, Peach, Mallow
- Recommended Accessories: Any
While it may seem odd to want two healers for this fight, it's because Speardovich's big weakness to Lightning that you'll want Mallow as your main attacker first, and backup healer second so Peach can focus on group healing.
Speardovich has a lot of health, so you can expect a very lengthy battle. To make matters worse, he can hit exceptionally hard with his group Water Blast attack, single target Flame Stones, and his spear jabs. Wait until he affixes his head to the spear and pulls it back before getting ready to block the attack!
To make matters worse, after taking bit of damage, he'll employ the Mirage Attack, making a mirror image of himself to attack alongside him. They look identical, but thankfully there are a few ways to find the real one:
Have Mallow use his Thought Peek, and the mirage's thought bubble will reference the fact that it's a fake. You'll also find that the fake one has less health, and if you use Thunderbolt, the mirage should take slightly more damage than the real Speardovich.
Once you're sure you know the fake, keep targeting the real Speardovich with Mario's timed regular attacks, Mallow's timed Shocker (right before the blast hits), and have Peach keep using heals or use your Triple Attack full heal if things get dire.
After dealing enough damage to the real target, the mirage will vanish, and soon the boss will fall. Finally, Seaside Town will be rid of the Smithy Gang Menace!
Return to Seaside Town
When the battle concludes, you can find a note posted from Jonathon on a nearby palm tree, and just below it is the Shed Key.
Return to Seaside Town and go down to the westernmost building that was barred earlier, and you can find all the residents of the town imprisoned here! Be sure to speak to the Elder, who will reward you for trying to hold out on giving them the Star Piece by giving you a Flower Jar.
You can now view many more of the shops that line Seaside Town to find a lot more items can be purchased than the first time around, including a lot of items only sold in previous towns: A Weapon and Armor Shop, Health-Food Store, and Accessory Shop.

Since there's a lot of gear you should hopefully already have bought by this point, you shouldn't need to make too many purchases (but definitely stock up on any accessories you may have passed on earlier if you didn't have the money). You should also be sure to grab the few new weapons that are upgrades for a few characters, including a Paratroopa Shell for Mario, Ribbit Stick for Mallow, Double Punch for Geno, and Parasol for Peach. The Lucky Hammer (which used to be called just a Hammer in the SNES version that looked identical save for the tooltip) does a lot less damage, but it does guarantee a yoshi minigame in each fight when used, should you want to grind up money or xp quickly.
Other new attractions you can find in Seaside Town include a shop in the middle of the top row of buildings where you can trade-in regular Mushrooms (most easily collected in the Forest Maze or bought in stores) for a chance to get another consumable item back like Syrups.
If you check the farthest left building on the other row of shops, you can buy-in for a Beetle Mania minigame, where you can return to Booster Hill and race to find different kinds of Beetles to earn coins, and possibly even a few Frog Coins!
To continue on your quest, return to the Elder's House and ask him about where to go next, and he'll point you to Land's End, where a rumored town of reformed monsters may know the way to the next Star Piece. Be sure to also buy any other items from the Frog Coin Emporium upstairs if you can spare the coins before heading out.

Arriving at Land's End, you can find a Save Point next to a large cannon that you can hop inside.
Wait for the cannon to pivot its aim up and to the northeast, and fire off to reach the top of the first plateau past a floating yellow block.
Hidden Treasure Chest 24
In the very first area of the Land's End region, fire yourself out of the cannon to reach a floating yellow platform, then jump when the platform is at its highest to reveal a Hidden Treasure Chest with a Red Essence inside.
Moving to the second area, you'll find another cannon you can jump into shoot yourself up and into a small pit, where three Chow enemies will jump out of and surround you.
Often joined by Octovaders, they'll come at you with poison attacks while the Octovaders fire out Sleep Sauce, so plan accordingly with accessories to negate poison and sleep, or have Peach ready to clear these effects.
Once you jump out of the hole, be sure to jump straight up to reveal a hidden yellow floating block, allowing you to shoot back up from the cannon below to reach the top of this high platform that has a Treasure Chest with a Frog Coin.
Hidden Treasure Chest 25
In the second major area of the Land's End region, move next to a hole up in the northwest where you get fired into, and jump up to reveal a floating yellow platform, You can return to the cannon and fire yourself again to reach the high plateau, then jump up on the far west side of the platform to reveal a Hidden Treasure with a Kerokero Cola.
Head to the next area, you'll find a line of narrow rocky platforms lined with Geckits that will crawl around, fall down, and hop back up to the platforms via cannons below that only they can use properly (excluding one on the far left you can use to get back up if you yourself fall down.
The Geckits tend to swarm these tiny platforms making fights hard to avoid, but as you'll find many enemies here are weak to ice attacks, try out Mallow's new Snowy ability if you've unlocked it to quickly kill groups of these new enemies, or conserve your FP and let the Geckits accidentally hit each other in their confusion.
Crossing the platforms and going through the arch, you'll arrive at a forested area of Land's End, filled with Stinger bees, Fink Flowers, and more Octovaders. Poison from the Stinger's Thornet ability is still worth taking into consideration for keeping an Antidote Pin equipped, as is the Trueform pin for their Funguspike.
Hidden Treasure Chest 26
When you reach the fourth greenery area of Land's End, look along the lower southeast part of the room for several purple flowers. Hop onto the middle flower and jump towards the flower up and to the right, and you can hit a Hidden Treasure Chest between the two flowers that has a Frog Coin inside.
After getting the Hidden Treasure, before going back to the spinning red flower, look for a small path down to the right to reach the lower part of the edge of the forest. There's a high rocky plateau above with a sky bridge, but down here you can find a cave built into the side of the upper left plateau, as well a Flower Tab stashed in the corner past the cave.
Enter the underground cave, and run past the Geckits and Spinthra in this area while jumping off a stack of crates to reach a Treasure Chest holding a Frog Coin to the left of the crates. Just beyond you can move toward a section of alcoves with a Chow in the top right corner.
Hidden Treasure Chest 27
Underneath the Sky Bridge minigame leading to the desert in Land's End, jump down and enter a cave opening below the bridge leading toward Kero Sewers. At the end of a path, there are three alcoves up in the top corner. Look for the northernmost corner where a Chow enemy is and jump up in that corner to find the Hidden Treasure Chest with a Frog Coin.
Head down the cave stairs to the next section, where you'll likely battle flying Shy Guys named Beezos along with Ribbites (who can also use Sleep Sauce).
Move along the outer walls until you can find one of three barrels to kick down one to the low platform, creating a way to get back up when you drop down. Open the Treasure Chest here for a Mushroom, then enter the warp pipe to be taken to an unexpected place... Kero Sewers!
At long last you can finally access the high Treasure Chest in the last room in the sewers, so hop across and you'll get some Cricket Jam.
Be sure to pull up the map and quickly head back to Tadpole Pond. Give the Cricket Jam to the Frog Sage, and he'll reward you with 10 Frog Coins!
Now return to Land's End and backtrack all the way to the forested area. This time, take the spinning red flower to jump up to the higher platform, and keep traveling up until you are forced to jump off a cliff.
You'll end up on top of one side of the Skybridge, and a Shaman will challenge you to a minigame to cross the bridge while bullets are being fired at you. There's a few different difficulty tiers, and you'll earn even more if you can do it more than once in a row without falling (though at least the Shaman can bring you back up if you do).
Take him up on his offer if you wish, and when you reach the other side, jump off the cliff to the northeast to enter the desert portion of Land's End.
Upon entering the desert, you'll meet a friendly Rat monster, who will give you a hint at how to find Monstro Town.
Use the Save Point, and then get to exploring. The first area you are in leads to two others, and each contains multiple whirling points in the sand, and falling in one will take you to one of the three areas.
The trick is to find a whirlpool with a Shogun Ant popping out of the middle. You can jump on it's head, and doing so three times will earn you a Frog Coin. The true trick is that once you fight it or it pops back into the whirl, follow it and you'll end up in a new area.
Getting into the right whirl can be a bit tricky, as they are constantly moving around, and the floating Beezos can get in the way and force a battle, and you may lose your place afterwards.
Even more dangerous, you might spot a little floating cloud wandering around. Battling with it, you'll learn that it's an invisible enemy called a Formless. It may seem like it has little health, but it can dodge many attacks. Defeating it with a Fireball or Snowy in this phase will bring out the true enemy - A Gassox, which is a very tough opponent with over 600 health!
Once revealed, the Gassox can use a lot of different unblockable elemental strikes that deal a lot of damage, but luckily still has its weakness to fire and ice. Use Mario and Mallow to defeat it quickly before its big attacks get too much to deal with.
Once you've jumped into enough of the whirls where the Shogun ants pop out of, look for an area that has a path leading to the north. This leads to a high peak where you can meet the Rat monster again, but there's no way to scale this mountain yet.
Instead, return to the previous area and fall down one last whirl where the Shogun ant appears from, and you'll enter a secret cave leading to an underground temple.
Belome Temple
When you first fall down, you'll be able to use a Save Point, and then drop down to a platform below with some Geckits and a Treasure Chest that holds a Super Star.
Sprint ahead and through the next room once you have the Super Star to bulldoze through a literal wall of Chows, and then dive into a pit in the next room, and you'll find the large cave filled with stationary Geckits all over the room.
Take out as many as you can to earn some easy experience, and once the star power fades, skirt the rest until you can enter the far room leading to the temple.
In the first main room of the temple, head down the stairs to find a Shaman who will let you return to the Land's End Desert for 100 Coins. You don't need to now, so ignore him and continue onward.
In the next room, a Shaman will offer to have your fortune told in exchange for 50 Coins. Luckily, a Treasure Chest to the left has exactly 50 Coins if you somehow spent all of yours. Say yes, and he'll ask that you jump up to hit the three faces on the wall in any order to get your fortune. In fact, the order you select them will determine what you get, which will be waiting in the next room:
- Left + Center + Right: Chance of getting a Mushroom or Yoshi Cookie.
- Left + Right + Center: Yoshi Cookie.
- Center + Left + Right: Three Chow enemies will fight you.
- Center + Right + Left: Chance of fighting either three Chow or a Beezo.
- Right + Left + Center: Chance of receiving 100 Coins, or receiving a Frog Coin.
- Right + Center + Left: 100 Coins.
Whichever you decide to pick, a column of blocks will fall off to the right with a note saying your fortune awaits, so jump up and head right, and then down a warp pipe into a room that looks like the boss room from Kero Sewers, only here you'll find a Treasure Chest with your fortune prize.
In the room beyond, you'll find another Treasure Chest, and this one holds a whopping 150 Coins! Be sure to also head down the stairs to find an additional Treasure Chest with a Frog Coin, but don't leave just yet.
Hidden Treasure Chest 28
When you get to Belome's Temple, proceed through the area until you reach a gate after you get your fortune revealed. Further ahead are two visible chests, and you can jump on top of the chest on the left to jump upwards and reveal a Hidden Treasure Chest with a Frog Coin.
Hidden Treasure Chest 29
In the same area as the previous chest, past the gate where your first fortune is revealed, and head down the stairs from the first hidden chest. At the bottom of the stairs, move right and go into the top of the small alcove here and jump up to reveal a Hidden Treasure Chest with a Frog Coin.
The next room will have a single statue face on the wall, and a Shaman next to it who tells you that the fortune you read when jumping up to the face will determine where the nearby elevator leads:
- "Sorry, I'm not accepting visitors past my bedtime" - this will lead to a treasure vault, but you'll lack the key to enter right now.
- "Mmm, I'm so hungry! Wish I had something to eat!" - this will lead to the boss battle and Monstro Town beyond.
If you get the wrong fortune, simply leave the room and come back until you can trigger the boss fight, then take the floating yellow block down to face Belome for a second time.
Boss Battle - Belome (Temple)

HP | 1200 | Weak Elements | N/A |
EXP | 84 | Weak Statuses | Fear, Poison, Mute |

- Recommend Level: 16
- Recommended Party: Mario, Peach, Mallow
- Recommended Accessories: Wake-Up Pin (Mallow), Safety Badge (Peach)
Round two of the Belome fight will play out a bit differently than what you're used to from the Kero Sewers. Not content just to give your party a little lick, Belome can now eat a party member at random and produce a clone of that character to fight you!
Because of this, it's generally a good idea to have Mallow and Peach as your extra party members as they'll deal less damage than say, a Clone Geno. However, they do share some resistances to be mindful of - Clone Mallow is resistant to a lot of elemental attacks, while Clone Mario is resistant to jump attacks.
Because of this, it's often a better idea to solely focus on taking out Belome, with Mario using timed regular attacks or Super Jumps, while Mallow focuses on using his Shocker ability just on Belome.
Along with creating clones, Belome will regularly use Light Bubbles and Lulla-byes to put your party to sleep, so keep resistant accessories on your healers so they can keep going, and Peach can also cast Therapy to cure, or use Cleansing Aid as needed.
With enough damage dealt, Belome will fall, and his clones will fade alongside him. When he leaves, a green?! switch will appear in his place, and you can hit it to open the gate to a warp pipe to Monstro Town.
Monstro Town
When you enter the village of reformed monsters, you'll find a line of shops and residences built into the rock wall, and features a variety of services.
Enter the first home to meet Monstermama, a Toad landlady resides. When you ask to view the Star Piece, she'll send you upstairs to view it.
Unfortunately, you'll find the rumored Star Piece is actually just a friendly Starslap. On the bright side, interacting with her will play a series of notes, and you can view a musical suite on a note to the left - copy it down because we'll be using it shortly.
Also in the room, you can talk to a chest mimic that tracks how many Hidden Treasure Chests you've found so far. If you've been following along with our walkthrough, you should only have 10 left!
Head back downstairs and talk to Monstermama, and she'll recommend the last place to look for a Star Piece is straight up in the clouds! With the help of a crew of Paratroopas led by Sergeant Flutter, they'll race off to the desert edge of Land's End to form a way for you to climb the previously impassible cliff face. But before you head out to find them to reach Bean Valley, there's a few more things to do here.
As you exit Monstermama's house, you may spy a shiny key high above on a ledge above. Enter the next house to the right, and talk to the Thwomp here and he'll shake the ground. This will cause the key to wiggle towards the cliff, so keep talking to him for a total of seven times, and the Temple Key will fall down where you can grab it.
You can also talk to the Chow inside to track how many consecutive Super Jump's you performed in a row. It can be incredibly difficult to get past 12 due to the very precise timing you need to the Action Command, but if you get at least 30 in a row, you'll get a great item! Get 100 in a row, and you'll get the most powerful armor in the game!
The next locked black door to the right is sealed, but a Piranha Plant in the previous room offers an interesting clue about "Shiny Rock". This is actually the Shiny Stone a small mole girl is selling in Moleville, in exchange for Fireworks that another mole in the building to the left is selling for 500 Coins. Doing so will unlock a secret and incredibly hard boss, so we recommend waiting until you've gotten a lot more levels and some better gear before attempting this.
Past the sealed door, an Item Shop is run by one of Bowser's former captains, Goomhilde. Along with her Triplets who sell Mushroom, she offers a nice selection of items (for Bowser):
Goomhilde's Shop | |||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Items | Weapons | Armor | |||
Mid Mushroom | 20 Coins | Spiked Chomp (Bowser) | 94 Coins | Courage Shell (Bowser) | 60 Coins |
Maple Syrup | 30 Coins | ||||
Pick Me Up | 5 Coins | ||||
Cleansing Juice | 4 Coins | ||||
Party Cleanse | 50 Coins |
If you still have Bowser wearing the Work Pants, you may not need to buy the Courage Shell, but the Spiked Chomp should definitely be an upgrade.
In the final room along this row, you'll find a lone bed with a message from "The Three Musty Fears". Take them up on their offer for a free bed rest, and they'll appear while you sleep to offer you the chance to play a game: Find three hidden flags all across the world, and bring them back for a reward!
- The Greaper tells you he hid his flag "behind a wooden flower". You can find this wooden flower sign at the entrance to Rose Town in the Tadpole Pond Region. Just check behind and interact with the sign to find the first flag.
- The Dry Bones tells you he hid his flag "under a green bed". It's been awhile, but there just happens to be a green bed in Mario's Pad, where you started your adventure in! Enter your home and interact with the bed itself to get the second flag.
- The Boo tells you he hid his flag "Between O and A". A word that includes O and A is GOAL, and there's a GOAL on the ground at the edge of the Mushroom Derby course on Yo'ster Isle. Return to the island and stand at the goal area to find the final flag.
When you return to sleep here once more with all flags recovered, the Three Musty Fears will congratulate you in your dreams, and offer the Ghost Badge as a reward!
Back outside in Monstro Town, there's a hole in the far bottom right corner that hides a Save Point, and stairs up to a dojo where another of Bowser's captains, Jagger, trains under his sensei.
You can challenge him to a duel, which you should be able to clear at your current level, as he only has 600 health and a basic Terrapunch attack that deals moderate damage until you can block it reliably. Just make sure to avoid jump attacks unless you have Jump Shoes equipped!
Defeating him will reveal his sensei Jinx, who offers to duel you at three progressively harder levels:
Boss Battle - Jinx
Boss - Jinx (Testing Capabilities / You Asked for It / Sensei in Action) | |||
---|---|---|---|
HP | 600 / 800 / 1000 | Weak Elements | N/A |
EXP | 0 | Weak Statuses | N/A |
Coins | 0 | Drops | N/A |
- Recommend Level: 16 / 17 / 20+
- Recommended Party: Mario, Peach, Bowser
- Recommend Accessories: Safety Ring (Peach), Ghost Medal (Mario)
For his first round, Jinx hits pretty fast, but not too hard compared to his later duels.
His Jinxed attack looks like a multi hit combo that knocks you into the air - but you should wait until getting hit up to press A as he lands his jump attack blow to negate the damage.
His other move, the Triple Kick, actually looks like a very fast jump into a dive kick, so wait until he's on the diving part to block. Since he has no weaknesses to speak of, it's best to have Mario and Bowser focus on timed attacks while Peach heals as needed. Be ready for him to increase his defense with Valor up near the end of the fight, but other than that there's not too much to surprise you.
In his second round, Jinx will start using two new moves. Quicksilver is a very strong and fast attack has he teleports in front of you, giving you a very small window to block before his attack lands.
Silver Bullet on the other hand, is guaranteed a one-hit KO as he teleports right behind you, and again gives very little time to react (there's a short delay after he appears behind you, so wait a beat before pressing A to block). If you don't have an accessory guarding against mortal blows, you need to be nailing the timing of blocking or you'll be taking a lot of dirt naps.
The final round, he'll have a whopping 1,000 HP, and will also use an ultimate move called Bombs Away, which deals hundreds of points of damage on a good day unless you block the fast blue projectile before it hits you. While you might be able to beat the first two rounds your first visit to Jinx, you should probably come back when you're at least level 20 and have completed the Nimbus Land area, and gotten the Lazy Shell.
Expect this fight to take a while, with a lot of healing and resurrecting using Peach or Pick Me Ups. Mario should have the Lazy Shell Weapon, while Peach should have the Lazy Shell Armor to make sure most attacks won't take her out.
Jinx can also use both Valor up and Vigor up to raises his offense and defense, drawing the fight out for quite awhile. If you're playing the Super Mario RPG Remake, be sure to swap in Geno for a bit to raise Mario's attack, and use a suitable triple attack for defensive or offensive opportunities.
Once Jinx has been defeated three times, he'll concede that you are the new sensei, will rebrand the dojo as the school of super jumping, and even put your initial on the front. You'll gain the Jinx Belt in recognition, which increases your offensive powers by a lot and guards against mortal blows!
Hidden Treasure Chest 30
Once you reach Monstro Town, head to the very far right door that leads to this region's exit. In the small room by the exit door with the note, move to the left past a bush and jump upwards to reveal a Hidden Treasure Chest with a Frog Coin.
Now you have the Temple Key from the high ledge in Monstro Town, return to the springboard and go back to Belome Temple. Head back up the lift and exit the room, then return to keep hitting the statue face until the fortune reads that he's asleep.
Head down the lift into the Treasure Vault and give the key to the Belome Statue, Now you can help yourself to a motherload of treasure, including 8 Frog Coins, 4 Flowers, Fire Bomb, Royal Syrup, and Max Mushroom!
Finally, the last backtracking we can do right now is head back to Tadpole Pond. Using the image of the musical suite by the Starslap in Monstermama's house, you can replicate it in the musical area using the image above.
Done correctly, Toadofsky will award you the Soprano Card, giving you access to the best tier of party healing drinks from the Tadpole Pond's Juice Bar - Croaka Colas for 200 Coins! Toadofsky will also let you compose the final verse to her music yourself, so go wild and pick whatever you like to finish her song.
All that's left is to return to Land's End, where you can now make your way through Bean Valley to reach Nimbus Land, and the real path to the sixth Star Piece.
