Skill Trees allow you to customize your player's abilities. Each Advanced Class has three Skill Trees, two of which are unique to that sub-class, and one of which is shared with the other specialization of that class. For example, Trooper Vanguards have Assault Specialist, Shield Specialist, and Tactics, while Trooper Commandos have Assault Specialist, Combat Medic, and Gunnery.

Once you've committed skill points to talents in your skill trees, the points are cemented in. Thankfully, you're not permanently stuck. Simply visit a Skill Mentor in a major city to reset all your points to restore your skill tree to a clean state. The first respec is generally free, and all other respecs thereafter get incrementally more expensive.
