Intergalactic adventurers can't traverse all of outer space on their own -- it just wouldn't be feasible. To ensure that the average space wrangler doesn't have to go at it alone, he will be gradually joined by a ragtag crew of loyal and sometimes class-specific Companion characters, each with his or her own personality, moral stances, and set of controllable combat skills.

Companion characters are definitely part of BioWare's unique flavorings in the simmering MMO stew. A similar implementation of this Companion system has been seen in their other franchises like Mass Effect and Dragon Age, but SW:TOR really integrates these ancillary members to a vast MMO space like never before. Companions have their own Affection meter, basically a gauge that reflects their attachment to your character. The Affection can change according to your interactions during critical story moments and through gift-giving.

You can buy your Companions' love through presenting them with various Companion Gifts. Remember that not every Companion likes the same thing! In addition to the Affection meter, each Companion can learn a set of Crew Skills. Some of them are Romance options.

You can even equip Companions with different combinations of equipment, and even change the way they look by visiting special vendors that sell Companion Kits, which are essentially new skins for the Companion character.
