Sons of the Forest 1.0 Changes and Everything Returning Players Should Know
Sons of the Forest 1.0 is finally here and with it comes a whole host of new features! From new enemies to new cutscenes and even a new way to end the game, there are plenty of changes for new and returning players to enjoy. In this guide, we'll cover all of the new features and changes you can expect from Sons of the Forest 1.0.

New Cutscenes
Right from the start of the game, the changes are clear, with a new title menu appearing when you launch Sons of the Forest. There are also some brand-new cutscenes in the game, as well as voice acting from characters such as Jianyu, Timmy, and Eric. Right from the start, when you crash into the island, Jianyu will speak when he... welcomes you.
New Mutants
Some particularly disgusting new variants have been added to the game called Legsy and Holey. Holey is a large mutant, that looks like an unidentifiable mound of flesh, with holes all over its body. These are similar to the holes that Sluggy mutants have, where mutant babies are shot out from.
Legsy is a grotesque form that looks almost like a mutant is doing a handstand and has two large hands that carry it around, along with some smaller versions. It has thick legs that it will whip over its body to attack you. There's also a new variant of the Puffy that looks like the mutant is wearing polka-dot skin. It's aptly named Spotty.
Artifact Pieces and New Ending
The Artifact can finally be crafted, now that the final 2 pieces have been added to the game! This also results in a new choice you can make at the end of the game. If you want to know more about this, check out our How to Craft the Artifact and Artifact Locations page, where we also cover the ending choice and how to use it.
A New Way to Get Sick
The 1.0 release has added a new way to test your survival skills by introducing a new method of getting sick. When you drink unclean water now or eat rotten food, you'll see a greenish-yellow tinge applied to your health bar. Meds will be able to remove this sickness, but the best way to prevent is to make sure you drink clean water and avoid eating anything when it's bad! As an additional bonus, you can see clearly when food is rotten now with the introduction of new textures to show when fish and meat have gone off.
Story Item Reworks and Notes
Lots of the current story item pickups have been reworked and some new ones have been added. If you've played the game before, prepare for things to look slightly different with clothes, weapon attachments, and more in new places! Additional notes have also been added, and you can keep track of them at any time by looking at your inventory. There are 50 notes in total to collect now.
New Crafting Recipes
There are a whole host of new crafting recipes available in the update. You can now store Arrows and explosives in special storage racks. You can also use animal hide to make yourself a plush new couch and chair. Plus, there are three brand new traps, which are the Explosive Tripwire, the Molotov Tripwire, and Leaf Trap.
New Blueprints
There are 4 new blueprints to find across the game, bringing the total number of blueprints to 16. Finding them all will reward you with the new trophy Interior Designer. When you pick up these blueprints, they'll be added to the bottom of your Guide Book under Notes.
Additional Achievements
On the subject of that, there are now four additional achievements for you to unlock! You can check our Achievements and Trophies Guide for a list of all Steam achievements for Sons of the Forest, and check off any you've already got. But the four new ones are:
- Interior Designer - Find all discoverable blueprints
- Blockbuster - Watch all the found footage recordings
- Gumshoe - Collect all the note pages
- Oooh Shiny - Plate all valid weapons with Solafite
More Places to Explore
The map has constantly improved since Sons of the Forest was first released into early access, and it's easier than ever to navigate your way around the island. There are laptops that will mark locations on your map, markers in different colors that make it easier to identify points of interest, GPS markers, bunkers, and golf carts, but now there are also extremely noticeable flares.
Though those waiting to be rescued will drop dead as soon as you arrive, it's at least much easier to navigate to their locations now. You will also be able to spot smoke plumes coming from cannibal camps in the distance to show you when they're being inhabited.
Creative Mode
Want to get creative and build all the available structures in the game without danger? Then Creative Mode is the way to go! This exclusive game mode is only available after you've completed the game, but once you do, you can start a new save where you can just build. You'll start with a plethora of essentials, and even some key items like the Rebreather, so you can get stuck into exploration and crafting right away.
Bonus: Racoons!
These sweet little creatures have been added to the game and you can find them roaming around areas where the forest is dense. They'll also climb the trees so you'll see them popping up all around you. If you can bring yourself to hunt them, you can mount their heads and trophies and of course, get raw meat from them.
