Route 22
Once you have delivered the parcel, return to Viridian City and pay a quick visit to Route 22 to the west of this town before you move on. You won't get far, but you'll find Spearow and Mankey?in the weeds. Head to the north path to trigger another Rival Battle with Gary. Trainers that chose Charmander as their starter might want to pick up a Mankey, this will make the first gym battle a whole lot easier. Or they could evolve Charmander at around level 16 to teach Charmeleon Metal Claws, which is generally super-effective.

Rival Battle
This time around, Gary has got some higher-level Pokémon, so you probably don't want to take him on unless your Pokémon are at level 8 or higher. To make sure they are, spend some time in the patch of weeds to the south battling before hitting Gary. Simple tactics should work here, but only if your Pokémon are strong enough. When the battle ends, head back to Viridian City.
Gary has a Pidgey Lvl. 9 and his starter Lvl. 9. He uses only Gust and Sand Attack with his Pidgey first and later his starter.

Rival Battle
Once you've won the Earth Badge, it's time to go to Indigo Plateau. On the way, you will battle Gary one more time. Gary now has a Pidgeot (47), Rhyhorn (45), Gyrados (45), Growlithe (45), Alakazam (50) and his starting Pokémon (now at level 53). It's a diverse team -- so be sure to assemble a versatile gang of your own. Once you have beaten Gary, rest, save and move on to Victory Road on the west end of Route 22 (that connects to Route 23).
