Coal Locations
As you proceed into your version of the industrial age in Palworld, you'll need to further refine the raw materials needed to craft vital technology like various firearms. To do that requires numerous resources, one of the rarest being Coal. Unlike other rock formations, Coal is always a dark slate grey with sharper edges.
Where to Find Coal

If the area is dry and hot, then you're likely to find Coal. Deserts are your best bet, but you can also occasionally find some deposits in Dungeons. So be on the lookout as you head into any Dungeons to score some extra. And be sure to bring the best pickaxe you can craft.
The Pals Blazamut and Menasting can drop Coal. The former can be found in the Scorching Mineshaft southwest of the checkpoint at the Foot of the Volcano at about -436, -529. Menasting is also in a mineshaft — the Dessicated Mineshaft — in the southeastern corner of the desert in the northeastern area of the map.
The best area to mine for coal is the desert just west of the map's center. There are two particular spots at about (-156, -93) and (-98, -119) where Coal nodes cluster.
The -98, -119 location is fairly secluded and can make for a great place to establish a small mining colony of your own. Deploy a few Pals with level 2 mining along with the beds you'll need, plant a few Berry Plantations, and be sure to build a feed box and hot spring.
You'll also want a few wooden chests near the Palbox. Essentially you need dedicated miners, Pals on food production, and others on transportation. You can also build a furnace and put a Fire Pal on smelting duty. For more details, check out our guide on automating an Ore mining colony; the process is identical.
How to Farm Coal at Your Base
Thanks to the recent Sakurajima update, you may now farm coal at your base in Palworld. But to reach this point, which is quite late in the game, you must first reach level 53 and unlock the Coal Mine in the Ancient Technology tree for five Ancient Technology Points. Once you unlock the technology, it costs:
- 70 Stone
- 100 Coal
- 30 Paldium Fragments
