Checklists
Combat
Max Payne has a variety of maneuvers with which to counter the numerous enemies and their bullet showers. These include:
- Rolling
- Taking cover
- Shootdodging
- Bullet Time
While Max can luxuriate in the safety of cover, Max is not meant to be played as a shoot-from-cover shooter unlike games as Gears of War or Spec Ops The Line. The game is designed to be fast-paced, always moving forward, and will pull out all the stops to ensure that you are continuously coaxed out of hiding. Max Payne is like an action hero with a very powerful tool at his disposal. However, unlike many contemporary shooters such as Halo or Call of Duty, Max does not sport a regenerating health bar, and thus must take Painkillers to postpone death.
You will find that soldiering forward and a careful combination of rolling, Bullet Time, shootdodging, and cover will provide the most satisfying and intense experience.
As Rockstar's Head of Public Relations Simon Ramsey says best, the "cover is there for thinking, not hiding."
Cover is best utilized to recon the area in front of you and make quick decisions on how to best tackle the enemies in the area. Figure out where to shootdodge (not in tight spaces), when to use Bullet Time, and where to roll.
Tips
- Do not waste Bullet Time reloading. Cancel out and re-enter if you have to.
- Roll as much as you can to the next cover. Rolling can break targeting.
- Do not shootdodge in tight spaces.
- Do not stay in cover for too long, as some cover will deteriorate over enough damage, or enemies will wise up and will flank and/or rush you.
