Tips and Tricks
Grand Theft Auto 3 gets new life with The Trilogy - Definitive Edition release. If you're diving back into the world of GTA 3, refresh yourself on key mechanics and gameplay with these beginner tips.
Stealing Better Cars
To stop a moving vehicle, pull your car in front of the targeted vehicle. If you’re on foot, step out in front of the vehicle (at a safe distance) to stop it. Then, press the mapped button to enter the vehicle.
As long as you are facing the car you want to steal it doesn’t matter what side of the car you are on in order to initiate the carjacking animation. Not all victims of carjackings will react the same, some will be very passive and even run away and on the opposite side of the coin, those packing heat will try to cap you.
Cars Made of Paper
Note that vehicles take damage with the slightest tap in GTA 3. Be careful when backing up and use the camera to see what's behind you. You can repair your car for $1000 at a Pay 'n' Spray or just hop out and steal one from someone else.
If your car catches fire or if it ends up upside down, get out immediately. The car will explode. You cannot flip cars in GTA 3. Once it's belly side up, that's it.
Shooting from Vehicles
Select the Colt 45 or the Uzi before entering the vehicle, press the 0 for PC (or default shooting button for your vehicle control) to fire and your arm will reach out the window and shoot. The only way to aim your weapon at a particular target is to steer the car in the right position and use the forward and reverse to tweak your aim.
Making Sharp Tuns
If you need to make sharp high speed turns, use the handbrake to flip the backend of the car in the direction of the turn. The regular brake only slow you down and force a wider, slower turn. At extremely high speeds you will have to use both brakes to avoid spinouts or turnovers.
Finding Main Missions
If you want to focus on the story, prioritize taking missions from the various gang or mob bosses. Their locations are marked on your map with their first initial if they have missions for you.
Remember, you have to approach them on foot to start up a mission. Driving over a blue mission marker in your car will not start the mission with the bosses.
See all main missions for each area on the Walkthrough page.
Getting New Weapons and Ammo for Free
The best way to get free things and upgrades is by doing the main missions. When a boss is angry enough at someone in town, they'll often send you to an Ammu-Nation or someone else to pick up free gear. Chances are the enemies you're eliminating also have bullets or guns for you to pick up too, so don't forget that
Alternatively, you could have unlimited ammo. See how to on the Cheats and Secrets page.
Getting More Health
Here are a few ways to increase health:
- Find Heart power-ups
- Enter ambulances for 20 health points
- Getting wasted (fails mission but gives full health)
Running and Endurance Training
In the beginning of the game, you’ll only be able to run short distances before becoming tired and slowing down to a slow walk. If you stop to take some breaths you’ll recover quicker than if you continue to walk. The more you remain on foot to travel in the game the more endurance you build up. Your character needs exercise to build up endurance. If you hike it more often you’ll soon notice longer running distances before tiring.
