Runics in God of War Ragnarok are gems that can be slotted into Kratos' and Atreus' weapons and add additional damage to their attacks. Runic Attacks can be light or heavy and can be upgraded up to three levels.

Light Runic Attacks - Leviathan Axe

Winter's Bite

You will receive Winter's Bite after you defeat The Huntress during the Path Quest, "Surviving Fimbulwinter."

"Form a mass of ice around the Leviathan Axe and run up to strike a target with incredible force."

Skadi's Edge

Skadi's Edge can be found in a Legendary Chest in the Strond in Alfheim. The chest is found just after you first use Twilight Stone to destroy a wooden door from behind and fight some Wretches. Standing in the doorway facing the way forward, you should see a ledge just ahead that you can drop down. Do so, head left, then destroy the debris blocking the way, then kill the two Wretches who show up. In the room beyond the doorway will be the Legendary Chest, sitting next to an Artifact.

Wrath of the Frost Ancient

Wrath of the Frost Ancient can be found in a Legendary Chest in the Southern Wilds in Vanaheim. The chest in The Southern Wilds is found in the ruined marketplace in the middle of the region. After the fight with the poisonous Legions, go to the corner that gets you to the next area, but check the left-hand wall for some tree roots. To the left of them is a spot you can slip under: turn right, and you’ll find the chest!

Hel's Touch

You can find Hel's Touch in a Legendary Chest in the second major battle area of The Burrows in Alfheim, where you face off against Grims and a Dark Elf for the second time. Once you’re done, locate the exit door and climb up the wall to it. Once you’re at the top, turn around and look to your left to spot a wall of glowing Nest Matter, and a Twilight Stone below it. Throw the Leviathan Axe at it, cutting the Nest Matter and revealing a grapple point on the wall. Grapple to that point, climb up and right along the wall to a new grapple point, then turn around and use the hanging grapple point to cross the gap over to where the Legendary Chest is!

"An extremely quick burst of energy that interrupts and knocks back all nearby enemies."

Njord's Tempest

You can find Njord's Tempest in a Legendary Chest at Althjof's Rig. It can be accessed once you reach the furnace tower at the top of the rig. Here, face South and note two wooden barrels with Soundstone plates in the shade of the left-hand wall. Use Atreus’ Sonic Arrows to destroy them. Shimmy around the corner here, then drop down the gold chain. Jump across the gap and you’ll return to the wheel that moves a grapple point. Use it to raise the grapple point as high as it will go. Climb back up the gold chain, turn left, then use the grapple point to get across. Before you fall, grapple again to smash through a stone wall and into a small room. From here, grab the Lore Scroll if you wish, then find the doorway on the right that goes back outside. At the end of the walkway is the Legendary Chest!

Fog of Fimbulwinter

Fog of Fimbulwinter can be found in a Legendary Chest in the Myrkr Tunnels in Svartalfheim. The chest is found in the puzzle where you have to raise a gate by pulling a chain, then use the Axe to freeze a gear so you can pass through. This occurs after Sindri tries to talk to Kratos, and you have to push a cart out of the way. Instead of opening the gate with the chain, stand at the chain, face away from the gate towards an intersection, then go right. There will be some Red Fungi Bramble: burn it down with a Hex and Blazing Surge combo, then head forward to the chest!

"A massive ice wave that inflicts Frost damage and freezes enemies in its path."

Mists of Helheim

Mists of Helheim can be found in a Legendary Chest in the Cliffside Ruins in Vanaheim. The chest can only be accessed by going through The Veiled Passage, the caves accessed at the Southern end of the river leading to Goddess Falls. This itself requires opening the door by climbing up the Cliffside Ruins and using the Rune Slate. Once you’ve done all that and gotten to the end of The Veiled Passage, slide down the gold chain, then turn left and lower the drawbridge. A Reaver and three Nightmares will show up: defeat them! Once the enemies are down, stand on the ledge to the right of the drawbridge’s far end and look back across the bridge. On the other side you’ll see some gold rocks and Red Pots to detonate them. To do that, look for the red markings on the wall: place some Hex Bubbles on them with Sigil Arrows, then cross back across the bridge. Use a Blazing Surge to start a chain reaction that destroys the rocks! With that done, drop down the ledge, then destroy the gold rocks ahead by hitting the Red Pot. This lets you access the chest!

"A lingering area-of-effect attack that creates a small hazard, inflicting Frost status to all enemies inside."

Leviathan's Roar

Leviathan's Roar can be found in a Legendary Chest in Freyr's Camp in Vanaheim. While this Legendary Chest is visible when you first visit Vanaheim, you won’t be allowed to return here with the necessary tools until you return here to begin the Path Quest "Creatures of Prophecy" later in the game. When you do, you’ll initially be going down the same path as the last time around. As you head North-East, you’ll come across the wooden structure spanning the river that you have to cross through. Then on the other side, you’ll fight several Cursed Gulons backed up by some Nokken. Once they’re done, turn around to face the river building, then spot the Wind Fissure on your right. Destroy it with a Draupnir Spear, then climb up onto the roof to find the chest.

"A powerful Axe throw that returns with devastating impact. Kratos is fully protected while shielding."

Breath of Thamur

Breath of Thamur is earned by killing 28 of Odin's Ravens. Head to the Raven Tree in Niflheim and unlock the top-right Legendary Chest.

Ivaldi's Anvil

Ivaldi's Anvil can be found in a Legendary Chest in the Derelict Outpost in Midgard. After moving the third wooden crane into position (using the chain in the lower level to lower it so you can turn it), grapple across the gap, leap up the cliff, and it’ll be over to your left.

Flames of Anguish

You will receive the Flames of Anguish after defeating the Dreki during the Path Quest, "The Quest for Tyr."

"A quick uppercut that creates a fiery geyser. Launching nearby enemies."

Hades Retribution

Hades Retribution can be found in a Legendary Chest in the Temple of Light in Alfheim. The chest is in a side area just after Tyr jumps across some hanging panels to give you a way to cross a gap. Once you’re across, head right into a room with a Hacksilver Chest and a curved staircase. Partway up this staircase will be a flat area with a ledge on the left that you can drop down. At the bottom, turn right to find a fork guarded by four Wretches: make a U-turn to the left to drop down another ledge. Kill the two Wretches here, then open the Legendary Chest.

"A forceful stab that embeds a fiery bomb, which detonates after a brief delay."

Helios Flare

Helios Flare can be found in a Legendary Chest in the Abandoned Village in Vanaheim. The chest can be found at the second, optional wooden crane puzzle that you encounter shortly after defeating Fiske. You’ll need to get across the gap, but the stone column prevents you from turning the crane’s grapple point into position. First, look for a gap in the wall at the base of a tree lit up by a torch: vault through, punch open the Hacksilver Chest, then head left to the end of the tunnel. Here you can use the Blades of Chaos to pull down the stone column. Return to the starting ledge and now grapple across the gap. Head through the curved corridor (defeating the spitter plant along the way), then at the far end, turn the crane back so you can grapple across. The Legendary Chest will be there!

Rampage of the Furies

Rampage of the Furies can be found in a Legendary Chest in the Vanir Shrine in Vanaheim. The chest in Vanir Shrine is found in the Northern side-area, the one guarded by spitting plants and a drawbridge you have to bring down. Head across the bridge, right and up the slope, and then check the right-hand side of the area at the top to find the chest behind a gate. To open it, head through the nearby doorway and go right up the slope. At the top, look right for some Hel’s Bramble that you can burn down with a Blazing Surge from the Blades of Chaos. A crack in the wall will now be revealed, with a target visible on the other side. Cut it with the Leviathan Axe, and the gate will open up! Head back down to the gate (now raised) and claim your prize.

Cyclone of Chaos

Cyclone of Chaos can be found in a Legendary Chest in the Raider Stronghold in Midgard. This chest is found in the Raider Stronghold, which is the base inside Tyr’s Temple. Check the North side of the Realm Bridge to find the entrance. Defeat all the Kol Raiders inside, then head to the exit hallway to find the Legendary Chest at the end.

Atlas Eruption

Atlas Eruption can be found in a Legendary Chest in the Forge in Svartalfheim. You will not be able to access this Legendary Chest until you begin the Path Quest "Forging Destiny." Once you do, you’ll be solving a puzzle by trying to plug up two geysers at once in order to open a gate (to do this, freeze the left-hand geyser with the Leviathan Axe, then ask your companion to turn the crank and manually plug up the right-hand one). Once you’ve done this, head through the open gate, and the chest will be right in front of you.

"Repeatedly slam both Blades into the ground to spark explosions all around. Mash (R2) for more slams."

Tartarus Rage

Tartarus Rage can be found in a Legendary Chest in the Raider Hideout in Midgard while completing the "Animal Instincts" Favor. The Raider Hideout is the cave at the base of the double doors in the Eastern area of the Lake of Nine. It’ll be sitting in the back-right corner of the room.

"Two destructive Blade slams that stagger and Launch enemies."

Meteoric Slam

Meteoric Slam is earned by killing 38 of Odin's Ravens. Head to the Raven Tree in Niflheim and open the middle-right chest.

Tame the Beast

Tame the Beast can be found in a Legendary Chest in the Shipyard of the Fallen in Helheim. The chest is found as you progress through Helheim as Kratos. After solving the gate puzzle in The Gleaming Bale, you’ll emerge at a bridge area where you have to toss a Draupnir Spear into a Wind Vent in order to cross a game, fighting Hel-Walkers along the way. The chest will be on your left right after you swing across the gap.

Nemean Crush

Nemean Crush can be found in a Legendary Chest in The Burrows in Alfheim. The chest is found right after you destroy the bonds of the Hafgufa. After doing that, you’ll drop down into a lower area and face a Bergsra. At the far end will be the Legendary Chest, close to an Artifact.

Light Runic Attacks - Draupnir Spear

Mountain Splitter

You will receive Mountain Splitter as a reward after completing the "Spirit of Rebellion" Favor.

"Repeated long-range wind slices that stagger enemies. Press (R1) precisely while slashing to enhance each wave."

Huldra Charge

You will receive Huldra Charge after defeating the Ogres during the Path Quest, "Forging Destiny."

"A long-range Spear lunge that siphons an enemy's element."

Whisper of the World

Whisper of the World can be found in a Legendary Chest in the Jungle in Vanaheim. The chest is found among the ruins in the Eastern side of The Jungle. This means that the only way of getting to it is to complete the Return of the River Favor and then row across in a boat. Start by going to the shore with the Celestial Altar and the Mystic Gateway. From the Celestial Altar, head East up the wall, then follow the path right, down the short drop, and then left through the ruins. You’ll then leap through the ruins using various grapple points until you get to a safe ledge. On the ledge, face North-East to spot the Red Fungi Bramble, which is covering a grapple point you can use to get over to the chest. Look for a spot on the ceiling that’s close to you, then set up a chain of enlarged Hex Bubbles so you can set them off with a Blazing Surge.

"Drag all enemies inward before heaving them far away in a specific direction."

Thrust of a Thousand Soldiers

Thrust of a Thousand Soldiers can be found in a Legendary Chest in the Shipyard of the Fallen in Helheim. The chest is found near the end of the Shipyard of the Fallen area. After crossing an open area gouged by Garm’s rampage, you’ll vault over a wooden beam and kill two Hel-Raiders. You’ll next have to cross a gap by plugging a Wind Vent with a Draupnir Spear: you can do that by taking a right-hand path. Once you swing across the chest will be across the gap and around the corner!

Heavy Runic Attacks - Draupnir Spear

Honor the Fallen

Honor the Fallen can be found in a Legendary Chest in the Plains in Vanaheim. The chest in The Plains is in the North-Western part of the region, and requires a little bit of work to get to. Head for the North-West corner of the main area with the lake and look for some fallen rocks with yellow Wind Fissures in them. Stick a Draupnir Spear in each Wind Fissure. However, you can’t destroy it yet because there’s a third one on the back. Your route to the third Wind Fissure will differ depending on if you’ve been up to the local Celestial Altar or not. If you have and kicked down the metal plate on the ledge, head South a bit and leap up the ledge. If you haven’t, you’ll have to go North and head through a cave to get up top. However you get up there, locate the Mystic Gateway and head to the ledge to the right of it overlooking some red trees. From here you can spot the rocks to your left: stick it with a Draupnir Spear, then destroy the rocks! Drop down the ledge back into the main lake area and head through the new opening to the red tree meadow. The Legendary Chest will be in the back-right.

Artillery of the Ancients

You will receive Artillery of the Ancients after defeating the Drekis during the Path Quest "Creatures of Prophecy."

"Hurl Draupnir to the sky, raining down multiplying Spears."

Vindsvalr's Windstorm

You will receive Vindsvalr's Windstorm after defeating the Flame Phantom during the Path Quest "The Summoning."

"An array of chaotic cyclones rampages through the field, damaging all enemies in their paths."

Finger of Ruin

Finger of Ruin is earned by killing 48 of Odin's Ravens. Head to the Raven Tree in Niflheim and unlock the bottom-right Legendary Chest.

"Summon a massive tornado to send enemies tumbling in its path."

Runic Summons - Atreus

In addition to Runics that can be equipped on Kratos' weapons, Atreus can equip Runic Summons. These allow Atreus to summon specific animals to aid in the battle.

Falcons' Dive

You will find Falcons' Dive Runic Summon in a Legendary Chest in Muspelheim while completing the Path Quest "Into the Fire." While in Muspelheim, you’ll encounter Draugr that you need to defeat. Not too far into the fight, three Ogres will enter the battle. While Thor will deal most of the damage to them, you’ll still need to be wary of their powerful, unblockable slam and rock toss attacks, as they can deal devastating damage when caught off guard. Once you’ve defeated all the creatures, be sure to loot their rewards to receive some Hacksilver pouches, Ydalir Timber, and the Runic Summon, Falcons' Dive.

"Summons spectral falcons that disrupt enemies and dive into the ground. Falcons apply status of the equipped Runic Arrow."

Rampaging Ibex

You will find the Rampaging Ibex Runic Summon in a Legendary Chest in Jotunheim while completing the Path Quest, "The Lost Sanctuary." Upon crossing the gap over the pond, defeat the two Exploding Nightmares that’ll appear, then loot the Hacksilver chest nearby before continuing. Once ready, vault over the fallen log, and proceed to jump and grapple across the next set of gaps. Reaching the other side, defeat the four Exploding Nightmares that roam the area, and before climbing the ledge, you will find the Legendary Chest to your left, which contains the Rampaging Ibex.

"Summons a spectral ibex to ride and charge into enemies."

Wrath of the Wolf

You will find the Wrath of the Wolf Runic Summon in a Legendary Chest in Helheim while completing the Path Quest "Unleashing Hel." After looting a red coffin, have Thrud open the door on the opposite side of the room. Unable to open the door fully, shoot the latch that’ll appear between the gap just right of the door. Continue forward, taking out the Hel-Walkers and Hel-Brood that will attempt to stop you. When reaching the room at the end of the path, loot the Hacksilver chest to your left and equip the Mask, revealing that the way forward is once again blocked. Needing to open the gate, Thrud will move a nearby crate, allowing Atreus access to the ledge above, where she hopes he'll find a way to lower the weight that's preventing them from moving forward. Once you're ready, grapple up the ledge, and before jumping down the other side, loot the Hacksilver pouch you’ll find down the small path to your left. After dropping down, follow the path left, where you’ll find a Legendary Chest. This chest contains the Wrath of the Wolf Runic Summon.

"Summons three spectral wolves that pounce on enemies."

Bitter Squirrel

You will find the Bitter Squirrel Runic Summon in a Legendary Chest in Niflheim while completing the Path Quest "Unlocking the Mask." Thor will break through the ice rubble and from there, continue ahead until you reach the Frozen Caverns. As you move toward the ledge, a Hel-Walker will break through the ice, and two Ice Nightmares will appear – take them down. Upon clearing the area, climb up the ledge and loot the Hacksilver Pouch beside the fallen enemy. When jumping down the end of the ledge, you’ll encounter two more Hel-Walkers you’ll need to defeat. After clearing the area, you’ll find a Hacksilver chest at the end of the path that leads left. Using the Mask, have Thor break through the rubble by the ledge you had just jumped down. Following Thor through the newly cleared tunnel entrance, take down the group of Legion and Hel-Walkers that will charge toward you. Continuing forward, climb the ledge and then drop down the other side. A short distance ahead, defeat the Hel-Walker and Exploding Nightmares that will appear. Down this path, you’ll also discover a Legendary Chest containing the Bitter Squirrel Runic Summon.

Runic Summons - Freya

Freya can also equip Runic Summons. These give Freya the ability to use Seidr magic, and stronger attacks.

Steel Harmony

Steel Harmony is a reward for completing the "Freya's Missing Peace" Favor.

"Freya wields the power of both her Vanir and Aesir swords to send out damaging arcs of both Stun and Bifrost to enemies."

Seidr Exhale

You will earn Seidr Exhale when Freya joins Kratos at the end of the Path Quest, "The Reckoning."

"Freya uses her affinity with Seidr magic to conjure a deadly Poison gas cloud that seeks out her enemies, disrupting the battlefield."

Invoke the Storm

You will earn Invoke the Storm after completing the "Freyr's Gift" Favor.

"Freya summons a field of electrically charged fireflies around her."

The Queen's Roar

You will earn The Queen's Roar after defeating Queen Gna.

"Freya unleashed the true strength of her Valkyrie form by rising in the air and releasing a devasting shockwave with her wings."
