A new Gears of War game, titled Gears 5, was announced during Microsoft's E3 2018 press conference. Gears 5 will star Kait Diaz, a friend of Marcus Fenix's son JD who first appeared in Gears of War 4. Gears 5 will be released on September 10th, 2019. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate holders and Gears 5 Ultimate Edition purchasers will receive early access starting on September 6.

Gears 5 features five game modes;

• Campaign: As the Swarm descends upon human cities with corrupted Coalition bots, the Campaign will follow Kait Diaz on her journey for self-discovery
• Escape: the new three-player co-op mode where players destroy enemy hives
• Versus: back with new and also classic maps
• Horde: fresh with new hero abilities, skills and the ability to level up, setting up defenses, and more
• Map Builder: for creating custom escape hive maps for other players.

Other details include;

• Three-player Campaign Co-op: Grab a buddy and hop into the three-player online or split-screen co-op.
• Boot Camp: for players who've gotten a little rusty and those new to Gears to get up to speed
• Jack: You can now play as Jack, the support robot from the previous Gears games slicing those doors open
• Tours of Duty: Time to move up the ranks! Earn your way up from new recruit to four-star general in a new addition called Gears Tours of Duty. Participate in challenges, earn awesome rewards, and show off your loot.
