The Case of The Conflicted Courtship
The Case of The Conflicted Courtship
This is a perplexing murder of a woman in a public park. You meet Artie and Henry Raymond?(1)?outside the main entrance to the large hotel in City Of London. After starting the memory, walk to the nearby park?(2)?a block to the west.??
Objective 1: Inspect Prudence Browne's Corpse
Investigation Area: The Park
advertisement
There are 4 clues in the area: Prudence, Packet, Handbag and Knife
The Park – Prudence Browne:?Prudence?(1)?lies on the ground (glowing yellow with Eagle Vision) by a tree in the southeast corner of the park, a young woman with identifying papers. She has been stabbed many times in a highly violent manner. Wounds indicate a left-handed attacker. These types of wounds usually indicate a crime of passion. ?
The Park – Packet:?This packet?(2)?can be found on the ground near Prudence’s body. It contains powdered medication. Stamped “Dr. Trevor Alton” with an address.?
The Park – Handbag:?This bag?(3)?can be found on the ground behind the tree that Prudence is propped up against. It contains an appointment diary “10 A.M.: Trevor, park. Noon: Gilbert, his house.” Gilbert’s address is on the back of the agenda.?
The Park – Knife:?This standard kitchen knife?(4)?is on a curb near the park exit where a policeman is holding back a gathering crowd. It’s the bloodied murder weapon. ?
Doctor Alton’s Office and Gilbert’s House become new investigation zones on the map after investigating the above clues. Go to either investigation zone now. ?
Investigation Area: Gilbert's House
Clues: 1
Gilbert’s House – Letter from Prudence:?This letter?(5)?is located on a bookcase on the second floor of Gilbert’s house. In it, Prudence writes, “Dearest Gilbert, I have something of the utmost importance to tell you. I shall call tomorrow at noon….” And includes her address. This opens another investigation zone, Prudence’s House.?
Suspect: 1

Gilbert Higgins: Speak to Gilbert?(6)?standing on the first floor of his house. Ask him about Prudence. His tells you that he and Prudence are engaged to be married. He acts like he does not know she is dead.
Investigation Area: Doctor Alton’s Office
Clues: 5
Dr. Alton’s Office – Doctor’s Note:?This note?(7)?says, “Drear Miss Knight, I would ask you to please suspend Mr. Shelby’s prescription.” This was written by a right-handed person. Further investigation is needed to find out why this prescription was stopped.
Dr. Alton’s Office – Prudence’s Medical File:?This file?(8)?is located on the desk to your left as soon as you enter the second floor office. The note says that Dr. Alton gave Prudence a sedative for grave anxiety over her recent engagement with Gilbert Higgins. It also says she was involved with an unnamed other and the doctor commented that this was “intolerable.” This was right-handed writing. ?
Dr. Alton’s Office – Mr. Shelby’s Medical File:?This file?(9)?is located on the small table in the back of the same second floor office where you find Prudence’s file. This one says that Mr. Shelby has overcome his paralyzing timidity with astonishing success. It goes on to say that he will terminate Shelby’s use because of the adverse effects the same drug had on Mr. Baxter. This was right-handed writing. This points to the powder being a drug that turns introverts into uber-extroverts with possible negative side effects. ?
Dr. Alton’s Office – Personal Note:?This note?(10)?is located on a small side table to the left as you enter the back office on the third floor. It’s a personal note from Claire Knight to the doctor about a relationship that’s going beyond doctor / patient association. This suggests the doctor is not always on his best professional behavior. ?
Dr. Alton’s Office – Baxter’s Medical File:?This file?(11)?is located in the same third floor office with the personal note. This note box is located on the desk on the north side of the room. It documents Baxter’s over consumption and addiction to his treatment drug. He’s become alarmingly aggressive, has struck the doctor, and has seduced several women. This is why Shelby was taken off the medication. ?
Suspects: 3
Doctor Trevor Alton: Speak to Dr. Alton?(12)?in the third floor study about Medicine, Prudence, and Treatment. Notice he has a cut cheek. He seems shocked that Prudence is dead and denies he had a meeting with her scheduled today in the office or in the park. He also says Prudence’s packet was not a drug subscription from him. Much evidence you’ve found contradicts the doctor’s statements.?

Mr. Shelby: Speak to Shelby?(13)?on the first floor in a room off the lobby near the front desk. Speak to him about Prudence and Treatment. He’s under the impression the Doctor has ended his prescription for no reason. He is unaware of the adverse side effects.?
Claire Knight: Claire?(14)?is also on the first floor of the doctor’s office. Speak to her about Prudence, Alton’s Cut, Baxter, and a Park Meeting. This is the lady the doctor is involved with according to the personal note. She is sorry to hear about the murder but says Prudence started stopping by more frequently socially. She said the doc could do better, in her opinion. Jealousy could be a motive but no other evidence points to Claire. ?
Objective 4: Continue your investigation Investigation Area: Prudence’s House
Clues: 2
Prudence’s House – Unsent Letter to Dr. Alton:?This letter?(15)?is located on the third floor of Prudence’s house. You can enter this room through an open 3rd-floor window on the north side of the house. Prudence writes to Dr. Alton about a woman that berated her after an afternoon meeting together in the park. It goes on to say that this lady shared shameful allegations involving Baxter. She ends the letter calling the doctor, “my love.” This connects Prudence to an unprofessional relationship with Dr. Alton. ?
Prudence’s House – Prudence’s Diary:?This diary?(16)?is located in the hallway outside the room where you found Prudence’s unsent letter. The gist of the diary is that she can’t imagine being married to Gilbert. The doctor made a pass at her in the park, but he starts to become moody, even tormented (a side effect of his experimental drug. Maybe he’s taking the drug himself?). This diary is the second source confirming a meeting between the doctor and Prudence in the park. She thinks he’s going to propose marriage. ?
Suspect: 1
Lulu: Speak to Lulu?(17)?outside in front of Prudence’s house after you have collected all the clues. Talk to her about Prudence and Baxter. She is the crazy woman referred to in Prudence’s unsent letter. She says she saw Prudence kissing her Baxter. She said she’d come visit her each day she can to catch her with Baxter again. If this lady is not crazy, then the doctor has introduced himself to her as Baxter.?

Talking to Lulu unlocks the final investigation zone, Baxter’s house.
Objective 5: Continue your investigation
Investigation Area: Baxter’s House
Baxter’s House – Scattered Papers:?Enter Baxter’s house through the second-floor window?(18)?above his front door on the north side of his home. You enter his house into an office with five clues in it and two more out in the adjoining hallway. The first set of papers closest to the window is written by a left-handed man and is a death threat to a woman with a spot of blood on it. Remember, a left-handed attacker killed Prudence.?
Baxter’s House – Scattered Papers:?This second set of scattered papers?(19)?is in the corner near the window papers. Baxter learns Prudence is breaking her engagement with Gilbert. ?
Baxter’s House – Scattered Papers:?The third set of scattered papers?(20)?is on the large desk in the middle of the office. “She means nothing to you! You are a monster of my own making!” A message from the doctor??
Baxter’s House – Scattered Papers:?The fourth set of scattered papers?(21)?is on the floor in front of the desk. “I always got what I want. It is my due!” ?
Baxter’s House – Scattered Papers:?The fifth set of scattered papers?(22)?is in the corner on the floor behind the desk in the office. “…you are a burden to me. A pathetic, sniveling burden! If only I could be rid of you!”?
Baxter’s House – Paper Packets:?These packets?(23)?are located on the hallway floor just outside the office. They have powder residue on them. Powder was found in a packet at the crime scene.?
Baxter’s House – Knives:?The knives?(24)?are located on a table in the hallway with the packets. They are indeed kitchen knives identical to the one found at the crime scene. There seems to be a lot of evidence pointing to Baxter. It’s time to make an accusation. ?
After you finish analyzing the last clues at Baxter house you are ready to make an accusation.?
A this point you have three possibe suspects, Gilbert. Dr. Alton and Lulu.?
advertisement
Accuse: Look no further if want to figure it out on your own.?
Doctor Trevor Alton: Return to Dr. Trevor Alton?(13)?and talk to him about his cut cheek. He says a patient attacked him. That means he lied about meeting Prudence in the park. Accuse the doctor. The police take him away and Doyle congratulates you.?Motive
Doctor Trevor Alton’s experimental medication seemed to be so successful on one of his patients that he tried it himself, and created a monster! Going under the name of Baxter, this second, drug-altered personality lived a wild, scandalous life, seducing women as he went. The unsuspecting Prudence Browne, believing him to be Dr. Alton, fell in love with the passionate Baxter. Meanwhile, Baxter continued his seductions, which included the possessive Lulu, who later followed Prudence, planning to threaten her. Horrified by Baxter’s actions, Dr. Alton resolved to marry Prudence in order to save her reputation. Baxter, however, would not have his freedom curtailed in any way, and arranged to meet Miss Browne in the park, where he viciously murdered her. A crime for which Dr. Alton will pay the price!?
