All Optional Conversations

Throughout the chapters of Alone in the Dark, you'll have opportunities to have optional conversations with Detective Carnby and the Derceto residents. These conversations can provide further information on the main story or simply give a character more backstory.

To help ensure you don't miss a single conversation, we have compiled a list below that details where you can find all optional conversations in Alone in the Dark.

Chapter 1 Optional Conversations

Detective Carnby - Emily Only

Emily Only: After collecting the Commonplace Book from Jeremy’s Room in Chapter 1, speak with Detective Carnby three times as he looks over Jeremy’s art.

Emily Hartwood - Edward Only

Edward Only: After collecting the Commonplace Book from Jeremy’s Room in Chapter 1, speak with Emily three times by the table.

Batiste

After the cutscene with Batiste in the French Quarter, speak with him as he looks out the nearby window behind the counter.

Chapter 2 Optional Conversations

Ruth - Emily Only

Emily Only: In Chapter 2, after the initial cutscene involving Ruth in the Library, approach Ruth again. You’ll have the chance to discuss the novel she’s reading, Detective Carnby’s whereabouts, and finally, a short goodbye.

Ruth - Edward Only

Edward Only: When first entering the Mezzanine, you'll encounter a cutscene with Ruth. Following the cutscene, you'll have the chance to speak with Ruth three times. However, the conversation will offer little information.

Chapter 3

Juan

Following the initial cutscene that leads into Chapter 3, you'll have the opportunity to speak with Juan, who is reading by the tree in the courtyard's center. Speaking of Jeremy and the Dark Man, Juan will have three conversations, with the last ending with a goodbye.

Chapter 4 Optional Conversations

MacCarfey - Emily Only

Emily Only: When you enter the Sitting Room in Chapter 4, you trigger a cutscene with Grace and MacCarfey. After the cutscene, leave Grace's room and attempt to speak with MacCarfey, who is lying on the ground.

Grace - Edward Only

Edward Only: Following a cutscene at Pearl River Bridge, you'll have the opportunity to speak with Grace twice, who's sitting on the edge of the bridge.

Detective Carnby - Emily Only

Emily Only: When entering Dr. Gray's Apartment, you'll have the opportunity to speak with Detective Carnby, who's searching the nearby cabinet.

After opening the secret door, Detective Carnby will have three more conversations that you can discuss.

Emily Hartwood - Edward Only

Edward Only: When entering Dr. Gray's Apartment, you'll have the opportunity to speak with Emily.

After opening the secret door, Emily will have three more conversations that you can discuss.

Chapter 5 - Optional Conversations

After arriving back in Derceto following your trip to Greenland, you'll have the opportunity to speak with the following the following characters.

Jeremy and Dr Gray

Found on the balcony, you'll have the chance to speak with Jeremy and Dr. Gray.

Ruth

Ruth can be found sitting on the stairs, on the balcony opposite Jeremy and Dr. Gray.

Mags

Mags can be found by the cooking station serving Gumbo.

Batiste

Batiste can be found by the door leading to the Kitchen Garden.

Lottie

Lottie can be found standing by the fountain.

MacCarfey

MacCarfey can be found sitting on the bench by the fountain.

Grace

Grace can be found at the base of the large tree.
