How to Get Clay
You can get Clay in 7 Days to Die by cooking Clay Soil in a Forge. To find Clay Soil, all you need to do is search for some underneath your very feet. Oh, and bring a shovel.
Where to Find Clay Soil
Clay Soil can be unearthed from the ground in 7 Days to Die using a tool, like a shovel. Most biomes contain Clay Soil, but it's best to begin your search in the Pine Forest.
Digging into the ground with a shovel rewards you with small amounts of Clay Soil per strike. You get a larger amount of Clay Soil after destroying a "chunk" of the land, revealing deeper soil below.
Not all types of ground contain Clay Soil. The grass-covered landscape of the Pine Forest is rich in clay, but not dirt paths or asphalt roads. The former awards you with Crushed Sand and Small Stone, while the latter only relinquishes Small Stone.
Harvesting Clay Soil takes time and burns through your Stamina bar, but there are ways to improve your gathering methods.
Best Methods to Gather Clay Soil
You can boost your Clay Soil yield in several ways. The amount of Clay Soil you can unearth increases based on the shovel type and its level (Quality). For example, a Stone Shovel at Quality 4 can gather more Clay Soil than a Stone Shovel at Quality 1. An Iron Shovel is even better and can gather about twice as much Clay Soil per strike as the Stone Shovel.
Shovel Mods can also help when gathering Clay Soil. The Grave Digger Mod increases the damage done against dirt by 25%, and the Ergonomic Grip Mod reduces stamina usage by 10%.
The Snow biome seems to offer more Clay Soil than the Pine Forest. You'll need to dig through snow, but it may be worth the trip.
After earning Skill points by leveling up, add them to the Miner 69'er and Mother Lode Perks in the Strength Skills menu. Doing so will increase tool damage (Miner 69'er) to blocks and let you harvest more resources (Mother Lode).
How to turn Clay Soil into Clay
You can turn Clay Soil into Clay by cooking it in a Forge. While in the Forge, move Clay Soil to an empty slot under the Smelting section on the right-hand side of the menu. Add Fuel such as Wood or Coal then press "Turn On" to start the Forge. The Forge will slowly turn Clay Soil into Clay, the amount of which is displayed in the Smelting section.
Uses for Clay Soil
Clay is a vital resource in 7 Days to Die. It's an ingredient used in many Forge recipes such as Forged Iron, Forged Steel, Bullet Casings, Bullet Tips, and much more. It may not be possible to survive the zombie apocalypse without a surplus of Clay.
Clay Soil is also used in farming. Farm Plot blocks, which can grow vegetables and flowers from seeds, require Clay Soil to be created.
