E3 2015: Oculus Won't Have Mac Support in the 'Near Future'

When Apple prioritizes performance, Oculus will be there.

Current Macbooks, along with any being designed at the moment, won't be able to support Oculus Rift technology, Oculus VR CEO Palmer Luckey said during an E3 in Los Angeles today.

"It's not going to work on any Macbook that exists or is known to exist in the near future," Luckey said during an IGN Live interview. "One of the things that we actually announced is that we're putting Mac support on hold for launch, and focusing on Windows. People have said, 'Why don't you support Macs? So many people have Macs." It's true. A lot of people have Apple hardware, especially in the laptop space. But the GPUs in those, they're not even close to what we're pushing for our recommended spec."

Luckey said this trend isn't likely to change anytime soon, mainly because Apple hasn't been "prioritizing performance in their machines for some time." When it does, though, Luckey said the Oculus team definitely wants to support it.

Oculus recently held a press conference to reveal more hardware details as it approaches release in Quarter 1 2016, although it left final concrete specs out of the announcements. At the same event, Oculus also announced a partnership with Microsoft, which will allow the VR company to ship its system with a wireless Xbox One controller, and to stream Xbox One games.

Apr 29, 2022 - Xbox and Bethesda have announced a showcase this June, right around the time E3 would normally happen, but if you haven't heard, E3 isn't happening this year. But that's ok, because Bethesda looks to have a pretty solid lineup of games to show off, including the Indiana Jones game, State of Decay 3, the Perfect Dark reboot, Avowed, and a ton more. In PlayStation news, Sony won't allow you to stack PS Plus memberships anymore, even if you legitimately bought a code. Recently, Sony announced current PS Plus and PS Now users will get bumped to the "premium" tier of the new PS Plus. Word got around real quick that you could stack current subscriptions in order to save money on the PS Plus premium tier, and it looks like Sony is trying to keep people from saving a buck. Not a good look. And speaking of PlayStation Plus, May's PS Plus games have been announced, and they will all be available May 3rd.

Mar 31, 2022 - After previously canceling the in-person E3 2022 event, the ESA has now confirmed that there won't be a digital equivalent, similar to what was held for last year's #E3. According to sources connected to #E32022 planning, discussions about a digital equivalent were ongoing, but lost momentum. And now, those plans have completely halted, with E3 2022 no longer a thing. We're awaiting comment on what the next steps might be from the ESA, but until then fans can hold out hope for an E3 in-person event in 2023.
