Anyone who's played a game in this series should be pretty familiar with the mechanics. If baby Mario strays from your back, you have a limited amount of time to retrieve him. Yoshi-like things such as devouring enemies, laying eggs, then shooting said eggs have all returned, as has the flutter jump and ground pound.
As you might expect, the stereoscopic 3D effect isn't the only 3DS feature on display. Adding to the mix of traditional mechanics is a clever use of gyroscope. At certain lookout points, you can tilt the system to scroll around the area. It's ideal for hunting down hidden coins and collectibles you might have never known about otherwise.
What I played of Yoshi's New Island was clearly from very early on in the game. At first glance it seems like a beautiful, fun world full of hidden surprises, and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what the rest of the game has to offer when it hits store shelves.Audrey Drake is a Nintendo Editor at IGN.
