Guide Opening =============================================================================== Hello and welcome to my Sonic the Hedgehog (Game Gear version) FAQ! This is my first FAQ in a very long time and I needed something to get back into the groove of FAQing. For those of you whom have read my other Sonic guides, sorry but no Derin this time. Just something I needed to do myself. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 1.01 - Version History =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Version 1.0 - 30 April 2006 - Walkthrough finished and all sections complete, this FAQ is now done! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 1.02 - Introduction =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= When Sonic the Hedgehog arrived on the Genesis in June 1991, a similar game with the same title was also released for Sega's 8-bit Master System console and the Game Gear. Though shorter with less complex gameplay and a more linear approach, the 8-bit version of Sonic's original adventure is still fun to play and worth a go! =============================================================================== 2. Game Overview =============================================================================== Basics of Sonic the Hedgehog. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 2.01 - Story =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= CRUSH DR. ROBOTNIK! Dr. Ivo Robotnik, the mad scientist, is snatching innocent animals and turning them into evil robots! Only one tough dude can put an end to the demented scientist's fiendish scheme. It's Sonic, the real cool hedgehog with the spiked haircut and power sneakers that give him super speed. Help Sonic fight hordes of metal maniacs with the Super Sonic Spin Attack. Speed down rolling hills and leap over dangerous booby traps. Then splash through the chilling waters in an underground cavern. And if you're lucky, you can warp to the Special Stage where you jump from springs and bounce off bumpers as if you're in a real pinball machine! Your greatest challenge lurks in a flying blimp where you come face to face with Dr. Robotnik himself! Spin 'til you're dizzy, save the animals and become the super hero. Be Sonic! Be atomic! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 2.02 - Controls =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= D-Pad - Move Sonic (Left/Right; hold to speed up); look up/down (Up/Down) Start Button - Begin game from the title screen; pause/resume the game while in play 1/2 - Jump =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 2.03 - Basics =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Reach for the Rings! -------------------- In order to keep yourself alive as you travel to the hideout of Dr. Robotnik, it is essential to grab items scattered around each zone called rings. When you collect rings, you will be able to withstand one badnik attack, but you will lose all the rings you had collected. Rings can be found scattered around a level, or in a Super Ring Monitor, which holds 10 rings inside it. If you get 100 rings you will get an extra life, but your ring total will return to 0. However, if you have rings you will still lose a life if you fall to the bottom of the screen. On-screen Information --------------------- While playing ------------- +------------------------------------------+ Ring total ---+--> ( ) 51 | | | How much time -+--> 1 : 41 | in the act | | has elapsed-if | | this reaches | +---+ | 10:00 you lose | | # | 3 | one life | +-^-+ | | | | +---+--------------------------------------+ | The remaining total of lives you have After completing an act ----------------------- +------------------------------------------+ | SONIC HAS \ / | | PASSED X | | ACT / \ | Your current | | score --------+--> SCORE 1 0 0 0 0 0 | Time bonus ---+--> TIME 5 0 0 0 | Chaos Emeralds Ring bonus ---+--> RING 5 1 X 1 0 0 | you have Lives --------+> []x04 (O) (O) (O) <---------------+---- collected +------------------------------------------+ Special Stage ------------- In any act in which you collect 50 or more rings and get an exclamation mark on the end-of-level panel, you will be warped to the Special Stage. Here, you bump off springboards and bumpers while collecting rings, but you can also grab One-Up and Continue Monitors. You end the level by touching the panel, but you must do this within the on-screen time limit or you will lose all the items you collected in the stage. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 2.04 - FAQs =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Q: Is this just a dumbed-down version of the Genesis game? A: No. The Game Gear/Master System versions of Sonic the Hedgehog are completely different from the Genesis version in terms of gameplay and level layouts. The only things they share are the characters, some zone names, and some graphics. Q: This is a guide based for the Game Gear version, can it also be used with the Master System version? A: This guide is mostly compatible with the Master System port of the game, however a few things are changed around a little, such as the Bridge Zone boss and Special Stages (at a guess these changes were just made to suit the Game Gear a bit better). Q: I can't do the Spin Dash... A: Because it's not in the game, and it wasn't introduced until Sonic 2 on the Genesis. Live with it, losers. Q: Hi, I'm from CheatCC... A: Go away. =============================================================================== 3. Walkthrough =============================================================================== How to beat the game, and perfectly as well. ^_^ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 3.01 - Green Hill Zone =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Act 1 ----- Go right and collect the first four rings of the game. Defeat the ladybird bug by jumping on it, and continue to go right then grab a cluster of six rings in the air. Jump on top of the platform just next to these rings and smash the Super Ring Monitor. As you progress further on to the right, go down the slope while picking up the sets of two rings, and kill the crab creature just after that. Get the four rings in the air, then run up a large hill, getting more rings, and at the top of the hill, smash the Invincibility Monitor, then do a rolling spin down the other side of the hill (run and press Down on the D-Pad). You will soar into the air after the flick at the bottom of the hill and go through a huge cluster of rings before landing back down on the ground, where you can get some more rings and a Super Sneaker Monitor on top of a platform. After doing this, go right and cross the pit full of spikes via the floating platform moving horizontally over it. Now get the rings and run to the right over a little dip in the ground. Just after that, look in one of the palm trees to see a well-hidden One-Up Monitor. To get it, simply jump up and hit it from below to knock it down and you can get the extra life. Get the twelve rings in the air beside that, then continue to head right. Next, go down the slope and kill the crab, then run under the sloped platform and smash the Arrow Monitor. Now go up the before-mentioned sloped platform and cross the pit via the platform, getting the eight rings above it if you wish. Now run up this hill, getting rings and killing the ladybird robot at the top. Run down the other side, getting more rings, and cross the pit of spikes using the floating platform. Go right, get six more rings and run down the slope, kill one more crab enemy and then just keep running right to reach the panel and finish the level. Act 2 ----- Get the six rings in the air, then go right and you will fall through the ground to land in an underground cavern. From here, go up the stairs to the left and get the Shield from the monitor. Now go right and go onto the ledge, then drop onto the platform to the left with the Super Ring Monitor on it. Get this, then drop down the gap to the left and you will land in the water at the bottom of the cavern. Jump into a hidden wall to the left and get the extra life there. Now go back out and continue right. Kill the crab enemies and watch out for the spikes on the ceiling. After this, climb the stairs and jump over the sideways spring and use the spring in the alcove to the right of it to get on the ledge above it. Jump onto the ledge just to the right of it and get the six rings and the Arrow Monitor, and watch out for the bee in the air. Now jump onto the ledge to the left and jump on the spring to get six rings, and land on the ledge to the left. From here, go left back into the cavern, jump over the first gap, jump over the spring in the little divot, then smash the Super Ring Monitor against the far left wall, then fall down the gap just to the right. When you land, go left and fall down the next gap, then jump onto the ledge to the right, where you get your first Chaos Emerald! Now fall down the gap to the left and backtrack to the area where you got the Super Ring and this time, jump on the spring on the divot and go through the ceiling and land on the top section. Go left and get the rings and Super Ring Monitor. Then go right, get eight rings, then cross the large pit by using the horizontally-moving floating platform. On the other side, get some more rings then use a rolling spin down the steep slope to get across a pit of spikes and arrive at the end of the level. Act 3 ----- Run right and jump over the pit of spikes, then fall down the next pit. Head right and collect the One-Up Monitor, then go back left and use the spring to head back up and land on the ledge to your right, then run up two hills and you will run into your first fight with Dr. Robotnik. For help winning this boss fight (which you probably won't need), please refer to the Bosses section of my guide. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 3.02 - Bridge Zone =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Act 1 ----- Head right and use your spin attack to beat the spiky enemy, then jump over the first gap and onto the next platform, then leap over to the next one, getting the rings in the air (watch out for leaping piranhas coming from the bottom of the screen). Continue to jump over a couple more pits and getting rings until you reach a small slope. Go up it and smash the Monitor for a Shield, then jump up and get the four rings in the air above where the Monitor was. Now cross the dipping bridges and watch out for the leaping piranhas. Grab the six rings on the second bridge then go up the slope after it, then run over the long bridge without stopping (as the bridge collapses when you step on it). At the end, go down another little slope and jump on the ledge on the left-hand side of the seesaw and let the weight go up and come back down so you are projected into the air, but land back on the ledge so the weight goes up higher and thus you are projected up higher - while you are airborne move right to land on the platform. Get the rings and smash the Arrow Monitor. Head right and cross one more long, dipping bridge and grabbing some more rings. Now cross a large waterfall using a floating platform (be careful if you choose to get the rings in the air). On the other side of the waterfall, defeat the bee and smash the Super Ring Monitor. Now go down the slope and get across the dipping bridge, then get across a large pit via two vertically-moving platforms. Jump onto a small dipping bridge, then jump over to the next bridge, getting some rings in the air. Jump over to the platform to the right and then leap over the boulder with the spring in it. To the right is another of those seesaw things with a weight on - let it project you high enough into the air so you can land on the high platform to the right and get the extra life from the monitor. Drop back down off the end of this platform and then head over a dipping bridge, getting four rings in the air, and watch out for the leaping piranha. Cross the dipping bridge joined to it as well, and get the rings above that one too. Go right a little further, and underneath the top platform you will notice a Chaos Emerald. Firstly, jump on the spring to get some rings in the air, then stand on a section of the bridge to the right so that it falls, then QUICKLY jump to the left as it does so, so that you can land on the platform and get the second Chaos Emerald! Jump back up and now proceed to cross the previously-mentioned crumbling bridge and keep heading right to reach the end of the level. Act 2 ----- This level is one in which the screen is constantly moving along sideways, so you must keep up with it in order to progress through the level or it could ultimately cost you a life (for example, if it forced you off the edge of a platform and you fall to the bottom of the screen or if it crushes you up against a wall). Okay, so to progress through this level, from the start, head along right, to the end of the fencing and then leap across some platforms, getting six rings on the second platform. Then cross a dipping bridge, grabbing the rings and using your spin attack to defeat the spiky enemy. Now jump up the platforms after that and get the Shield Monitor. Cross another dipping bridge and watch out for the bee that attack overhead. After that, jump up onto a higher platform and carefully cross the short little bridge that crumbles when you step on it, getting the six rings while you do so, smash the Super Ring Monitor and get across the next short crumbling bridge and watch out for the spiky robot that appears just after it - use your spin attack to beat it. Go down the little slope, leap over the boulder, then don't bother with the seesaw-and-weight thing - just jump over to the platform after it. Keep going further on right, and when you see more ledges start to appear, quickly climb them to the top and go over another dipping bridge. Here you will notice a One-Up Monitor bobbing up and down in the water - to get it simply jump on to it - but make sure you move to the left or right to land on a solid surface when you bounce back up! Now head across these small bridges, then go over a long, dipping bridge, getting some rings. Jump onto the next platform and cross another short, crumbling bridge (watch out for the Piranha that will leap up from below), cross another one, then the screen will stop moving and you can carry on running to the end. Act 3 ----- There is a One-Up behind you. Get it, then keep heading right, going across a long, crumbling bridge and you will come to some dipping bridges, where you will face Dr. Robotnik. For more help on winning this fight, please take a look at the Bosses section of this FAQ. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 3.03 - Jungle Zone =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Act 1 ----- Go right and get the first few rings then jump onto the nearby platform with the crab on it. Kill the crab, then continue to progress right with the use of the platforms in the air. After the platform with six rings on it is a light green-coloured vine. Jump on this and go up it, then leap over onto a second, dipping vine. Get the six rings, then jump over onto the platform to the right. Keep advancing right over a few more platforms and drop onto the vine just below. To the right of this, you will see a waterfall with some ledges in it. Jump over onto one of the ledges and use them to get the One-Up Monitor on the top-left ledge. From there, get to the top right ledge and leap over onto a grass platform to the right that has lots of rings on it. Collect all these rings, then leap over onto the vine to the right, walk down it, and jump onto the next platform and get the Arrow Monitor on it. Head right, down a few more platforms and you will get to a waterfall. Get across it by jumping across on the logs that are going down the waterfall. Leap over to the platform on the other side and be careful not to touch the springboard, as it will send you into the water below, and you will die! Just to the right of this, you will see a swinging log. Jump on this and let it take you across the gap. Jump onto safe ground on the other side and kill the crab, then go right and step on the log in the water, and start to move right. Be careful of the piranhas that jump out of the water while you get the rings. After you get across, get some more rings then get across the long wooden platform but beware of the spikes and newt that appears to shoot fireballs at you. After here you'll come to another waterfall. Wait until you see a log come down. When it does, leap onto it and let it take you down. Jump onto another little platform to the left so that you're underneath the wooden platform you went across just before. In the water to your left you'll see a log. Drop onto this and keep running left to reach a secret alcove and the third Chaos Emerald! Once you get it, step back onto the log and head right until you see a springboard above you. Jump onto this spring to be sent into the air and land on a platform. Now head right, across the waterfall via the small platforms. Then go up some ascending pillars and then continue going across using some descending logs and you will be at the other side of the waterfall. A little further to the right, smash the Arrow Monitor and use another swinging log to cross a gap and leap onto a platform to the right and use a rolling spin down it to be flicked up onto a platform in the air. Go right and jump over the spring (be careful not to touch it), and use the log to head right, getting the fourteen rings if you want, then use a second log just after that to continue progressing right, then jump onto the wooden platform and run right to finish the level. Act 2 ----- This level is a bit different to the ones you've played up to this point, as the objective is to climb upwards to reach the end rather than just head right. That said, you must also watch your footing with a lot of platforms or you could fall and lose a life! From the start, climb up and right using the small platforms and get the five rings on the grass platform, then start climbing up and left. Jump up onto the platform with the spikes on the bottom of it, then get the Super Ring Monitor on the little platform to the left of that. Now jump over to the platforms to the right and grab the 8 rings on the grassy part, then climb up and left until you see a spiky platform, at which point jump onto the platform up and to the right, then jump onto the log to the left, and then quickly make another jump to the left, onto the two adjoined platforms. Now leap over to the next platform to the right, then wait for a horizontally-moving log to appear. When it does, jump on it, then jump up again to land on a long wooden ledge. Kill the nearby crab, then head to the very right, get the ten rings and use the near platform to begin climbing up and left. When you get onto a set of platforms with spikes on the bottom of them, jump onto the ledge above and to your right, then jump onto two adjoining platforms with spikes on their bottoms up and to the left. Now keep heading up and left until you're on a small wooden ledge with eight rings on it. Get these eight rings, then head up and right until you're on some grass ledges on the opposite end of the waterfall. From here, leap onto the platform to the left, onto the log to the left of that, then onto the adjoining platforms above and to the left. Smash the Arrow Monitor on the platform to the left of this, then head upwards and right, jumping across on the logs, but be quick as they fall when you step on them. On the end platform, jump up onto the wooden ledge and leap onto another ledge to the right and get the Super Ring Monitor. Now climb up and left with the floating logs, and again - be quick! On the left end of the screen, jump up a couple of grassy platforms, then go right and jump over the spikes in the wooden ledge and kill the crab. Jump over to the right once more, get some more rings, then climb up the ledges to the left, then jump onto the horizontally-moving log and let it carry you to the left, and jump onto the platform. Smash the Super Ring Monitor but be careful not to land on the spring that it was concealing! Climb onto the wooden platform just above, get the eight rings, then jump onto the platform to the right, then continue climbing up the rest of the platforms and run right to end the level. Act 3 ----- Go right and jump over the pillar. Just before you start climbing the vines, drop into the water to find the secret One-Up! Get it, then climb out of the water and start climbing the vines until you reach a dipping vine, which is the boss area. For help winning here, please read the Bosses section of this FAQ. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 3.04 - Labyrinth Zone =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Act 1 ----- It must be stated that the majority of the Labyrinth Zone is based underwater. And Sonic, like all hedgehogs, is a mammal and so he can't live underwater forever! When you are underwater for a while, you will see a 5-second countdown begin. When it reaches 0, Sonic will drown and lose a life, so you need to find some air to prevent this happening. You can either jump out of the water if you can find the surface, or if you find a set of bubbles underwater, wait until a large one rises, then jump into it to get some air. That said, let's start this zone. Begin this level by running right and slide down the slope with the green liquid on it. When you plummet into the water, head right and use the spring to get on the platform just above and to the left of it to get some rings, then jump onto the platform below and to the left and get the Shield Monitor. Below and to the left of this platform is another spring on the ground; use it to reach the high ledge to the left (under the slope you came down before). Now begin heading left, grabbing four rings, then drop down the gap. From where you land (get out of the way quickly if you land on a platform that moves up), go right. Grab the rings in this tunnel (kill the driller robot as well), drop down the first gap and smash the Arrow Monitor on this ledge, then drop down a little further to the right, and quickly get a bubble for some much-needed air. Once you have, continue to head right and jump over a harpoon in the ground that pops up to try to stab you. After a second harpoon is another set of bubbles - get the air if you need it. At the end of the tunnel, step on the pale-coloured tile and it will take you upwards. Quickly run off it onto the ledge to the left - otherwise you will get implaed by some spikes! Use a second pale tile to continue going up, getting rings in this narrow gap, and again, move off it onto the ledge to the left once it appears. Climb up these platforms, head left a little more, and watch out for a spike ball moving in a circular motion here. Head up a little further and you can jump out of the water to get some air (careful of the spikes), as well as a Super Ring Monitor. Now backtrack until you reach a gap - jump over it onto the ledge to the right and climb upwards, out of the water. Go up the slope to the left. Push the switch under the spikes to turn a nearby Super Ring Monitor into a One-Up Monitor. Jump onto the platform to the right to get this One-Up, then jump onto the next ledge to the right, then keep running right until you reach the end of the level. Act 2 ----- Go right, kill the driller robot, and slide down a slope with green liquid pouring down it. When you fall into the water, go to the far left area and smash open the Super Ring Monitor. Now go right and fall down the gap, then head right, through the tunnel. Kill the driller and get the long line of rings then drop down another gap (avoid the spike ball moving around here). As you fall down the gap, watch out for a second spike ball. When you land in the next area, use the bubbles to get some air. Now, head right and through another tunnel, jumping over a harpoon, then smash the Arrow Monitor just up ahead. Start climbing up the ledges to your right, but watch out for fireballs being shot from the gargoyles to the left. At the top, jump over the spikes and get some air from the bubbles. Drop down to the right, avoiding the fireball-shooting gargoyles. At the bottom, use the pale green tile to take you upwards then run onto the left ledge when it appears, or you'll hit the spikes! Get some air from the bubbles to the left, and kill the driller robot. Climb the ledges to the left, as usual avoiding the spike ball, then jump onto the ledge to the right and get the rings. Now keep heading right and use the ledges to quickly climb your way upwards. Be careful of the fireball-shooting gargoyles on the opposite ends of the platforms. At the top you can leap out of the water and get some air. Now head left, climb more ledges, and at the top, look to the left to find the fourth Chaos Emerald of the game! Grab it, jump over to the right, and keep running in that direction to reach the panel and finish this level. Act 3 ----- This entire level is underwater, however the countdown does not appear so you don't have to worry about drowning - however a tricky boss makes up for this, and the hidden One-Up is also tricky to get your hands on. From the start, go right and use the first spring you come across and land on the ledge to the left. Carefully jump your way through the spikes and you will get the One-Up in a little alcove. Once you have it, carefully make your way back out then head all the way right until you reach the boss area. As usual, take a look at the Bosses section for help winning this fight. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 3.05 - Scrap Brain Zone =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Act 1 ----- Start by running right, jump over a gap, get the four rings, jump over a second gap and run over to the gate and it will automatically open to let you in the building. Run up the slope, getting the rings, and at the top, go right, getting more rings and killing the caterpillar (watchout for the flamethrowers in the ceiling). Go through the gate to be back outside again, and cross the large pit via the conveyor belts here (there's a One-Up on the first one, however it could be risky going for it). Then go through the next gate to be inside a second building. Go right, but watch out for the sparkers - go past them only when they are inactive. At the end, go through another gate to be in a room full of conveyor belts. Simply head to the right-hand end of this room, run over a conveyor belt, jump on the spring and land on the ledge to the left and hit the switch to open the gate opposite you. Go through the opening you have made and head through this tunnel grabbing rings. Run down a slope then through the next part of the tunnel (watch out for the caterpillar enemy), down a second slope and through another tunnel, killing one more caterpillar. At the end, go through a gate and continue running right to finish this rather short and easy level. Act 2 ----- Go right, jump over the three pits, and through the gate into the building. Head right right and collect the ten rings, then go through the next gate. Watch out for the sparker just after the door, as you enter a room filled with conveyor belts. Using the conveyor belts, climb to the very top of the room then go to the left side to find a Super Ring Monitor to smash. Once you've done that, go to the opposite end of the room and run through this tunnel area, watching out for flamethrowers above and the robotic caterpillar whilst you grab the rings. When you reach the end, fall down the gap, getting the rings while you fall. When you land, go right and you'll see that the path splits in two - run up the upper path. Run through the door at the end, and you'll re-emerge at the foot of another slope (this one much steeper). Run up it and go right. Jump over the first two gaps and fall down the third one to find a secret area. Go right, through the gate, and step in the teleporter, to be taken to a room with the fifth Chaos Emerald of the game! Grab it and head through the gate to the left. In this new room, use the ledges to climb all the way to the top, and watch out for the bubble-shooting pigs. Once at the top, go through the gate to the left and jump on the spring and land on the left ledge. Push the switch and the gate to the left will switch positions - you'll need to keep it there to get through later on. Backtrack to the room with ledges and pigs, make your way to the bottom, and go through the gate to the left. Here, keep going left, jumping over the gaps when the flamethrowers above are not shooting fire. Once at the other end, go down the slop and through the doorway. In this new area, run left down the slope, then go down the slope below this to the right, entering the doorway at the end. In this new room, go down the zigzag slopes (watch out for bubble-shooting pigs). Once at the bottom level, jump over the gap, go through the gate and step into the teleporter to be taken to a new area. From where you appear, go left, down the slope, and at the bottom, you will be at the area where you had pushed the switch to reverse the gates, so now you can make your way through! In this room with conveyor belts, go to the top-left area and through the gate. Now head up the slopes and run through the flamethrower-infested tunnel, killing the caterpillar, and going through the gate at the end, and keep going right to finish the level. Act 3 ----- Go right, jump over the two gaps, and go through the gate into the building. Go right, get the four rings and go through the next gate, and the next one. Drop down the next gap and go through the gate. Head right, past the [broken] sparker, getting some more rings, and head through the next gate. Jump on the spring and land on the ledge to the left. Head left, through the next gate, and jump on the spring here and land on the ledge to the right. Run over the conveyor belt with four rings on it and go through the next gate, then jump on the spring and land on the right ledge. Go right, through the gate and use the spring and land on the left ledge. Go across the conveyor belt with six rings on it and then through the gate, then jump over the pit and jump over the switch. Head left and jump on the spring. On the top ledge, go through one last gate to be back in the open. Keep running right and you'll find Robotnik! Chase him until he gets on a platform that takes him high up into the sky. When the platform returns, step onto it and you'll also be taken to the sky, and the level will finish. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 3.06 - Sky Base Zone =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Act 1 ----- The continuous hazard to watch out for in this level in particular is the lightning caused by the silver diamond lights. When you see lightning begin to join up by the lights, get out of the way quickly or you will receive the equivalent of a badnik attack when the lightning flashes. So from the start, get the nearby 10 rings then jump across over two pillars and go up the slope, getting a few more rings, jump onto the pillar at the top of the slope and jump over the gap when there is no lightning. Go down the slope on the other side and get the eight rings in the air, but watch out for the spiky orb enemy. To the right are some platforms, but they are rigged by lightning diamonds - however a good way not to get hit is to stand on a platform and crouch when the lightning appears - that way you won't get hurt when it flashes. On the top platform is a Sheild Monitor - it would definitely be worth getting this. Once you do, go to the end of the platform and jump off to the right and land at where the eight rings are below, but watch out for another spiky orb enemy. Now go up the slope then jump onto the platform above and to the right, then get the Super Ring Monitor on the platform above it. Now make your way across the platforms to the right, timing your jumps and avoiding lightning. To the right, after that, are two cannons - jump over them and beware of the bullets they shoot. Jump over the next gap and collect some more rings and beware of the walking bomb! After this you'll see a platform with a propeller on it - jump onto it and it will start flying slowly to the right - but watch out for a line of lightning! You need to time your flight past the lightning when it is not flashing - jumping up will stop the flight of the platform. Once you get past that, jump on top of the pillar and get on a second flying platform. Let it take you to the right so that you reach a scaffolding area. Climb the platforms above and watch out for bullets being shot from the cannon to the left. Get on the flying platform, and as it takes you across, you should notice two vertically-moving platforms. Jump on either of them to be taken up, then jump onto the ledge to the right, and keep running on to the end of the level. Act 2 ----- You've now reached the blimp, and you know what that means - you have reached Dr. Robotnik's hideout! You now have to manouvre your way around the blimp to get inside and reach the control of his operations. From where you start, below and a little to the left of the edge of the platform you begin the level standing on is an unseen flying platform. Drop onto this and let it take you to the right. When you see another flying platform appear above, jump onto that and allow it to continue your voyage to the front of the blimp. When you see another platform, jump onto that to continue being carried along - watch out for a cannon shooting nearby on the fourth one. When the fourth one takes you to the very front of the blimp, look out for a vertically-moving platform. Use that to get up, and jump onto the "drill". Just to the left is the sixth, and final Chaos Emerald of the game! If you got the other 5, you'll be treated to a special ending when you finish the game. :) Grab the emerald and start heading left, and avoid the bullets being shot from the huge cannons to the left. Keep heading left, jumping over three huge cannons and one small one, then run into the opening to finish this level and reach the final part of the game. Act 3 ----- Run to the right and go down the slope to be taken to the boss area. For help with winning this fight, consult the Bosses section of this FAQ one last time. When you beat the boss (i.e. you smash the glass case Robotnik is in), chase him to the right and he will jump into a teleporter and disappear. When he does, jump into the teleporter after him, watch a final cutscene, and you win the game! Congratulations upon beating Sonic the Hedgehog! If you got all six Chaos Emeralds you will get to view a special ending, but I won't spoil either of them for you. Enjoy! =============================================================================== 4. Enemies =============================================================================== Ball Hog -------- A pig that fires harmful bubbles. There are very few of them in the game, and they are only found in the Scrap Brain Zone. Burrobot -------- Found in the Labyrinth Zone, these are enemies wearing caps and have drills for noses. They move in one direction very slowly though, giving you lots of time to smash them with a spin attack. Buzz Bomber ----------- A mechanical bee that flies over Sonic and pauses for a second before shooting a bullet down at him. Jump up to defeat this enemy when it pauses to make a shot. Caterkiller ----------- A caterpillar with a spiky body. Hit only the head! Found in the Scrap Brain Zone. Chopper ------- Found mainly in the Bridge Zone, this is a red piranha-fish creature that leaps up from streams and under bridges to take a bite at Sonic. A simple jumping spin attack will beat it. Crabmeat -------- Found in the Green Hill and Jungle Zones, this is a crab that takes a few steps and fires bullets from its claws. Simply use a spin attack or jump on its head to defeat it. Jaws ---- A small, mechanical shark that swims about in the waters of the Labyrinth Zone. It has no attacks in particular, so just jump at it to kill it. Moto Bug -------- Found in Green Hill, a Ladybird that moves quickly in one direction - simply jump on it or spin attack to beat it. Newtron ------- Like the Ball Hog, this enemy is only found in one zone and is very rare. It is seen in the Jungle Zone, appearing in the background to fire a bullet at you before disappearing again. =============================================================================== 5. Bosses =============================================================================== Green Hill Zone --------------- Strategy: The first boss of the game is also, obviously, the easiest. When you enter the boss area, Robotnik will fly from the right to the left a couple of times at the top of the screen for a couple of times, allowing you to get some easy hits in here. When he gets to the left of the screen, he will slowly descend to the ground, and when he touches the ground, he will zoom across the screen, so simply jump over him, and repeat the attacking process. Once you have hit Robotnik eight times, he is defeated. Bridge Zone ----------- Strategy: The setting for this boss fight is two dipping bridges. Robotnik will appear emerging from the water below. When his egg carrier peeks over the edge of one of the bridges, quickly jump on him to get a hit then stand on the opposite end of the bridge, and Robotnik will shoot three fireballs at you. Jump through the gap between the middle and bottom fireballs. Repeat this attack pattern until you have hit Robotnik eight times and you win this fight. Jungle Zone ----------- Strategy: You will be on a U-shaped vine for this fight. Robotnik will fly about above for a bit and then go to one of the ends of the vine and drop a bomb down that will roll around for a few seconds before exploding. The bomb will kill you if you touch it or are too close to it when it explodes. Try to jump at Robotnik as he flies above when you have a clear chance or when he pauses to drop a bomb, but remember to be quick. As usual, eight hits will defeat him. Labyrinth Zone -------------- Strategy: As I had stated in the walkthrough, this boss is quite tricky and it could take a few tries to beat it at first, but it'll be simple once you get used to the attack pattern. At first, Robotnik will pop up from the gap in the middle of the area and fire bullets to both sides, so be sure to jump and avoid it. He will then descend from one of the gaps in the ceiling, so if he is above you, quickly hit him. He will then fire a rocket that will travel towards Sonic, so be sure to leap over to the other end of the area and dodge the rocket as it heads towards you. Robotnik will then repeat this attack at the other end, then appear in the middle and shoot fireballs again, so keep attacking when he appears above, and after eight hits, you win. Scrap Brain Zone ---------------- Strategy: There is no real boss of this zone, although the boss music plays anyway. What you simply need to do is chase Robotnik and he will escape on a platform. Step on this platform yourself and you will finish the Scrap Brain Zone. Sky Base Zone ------------- Strategy: The last boss of the game is the toughest and most annoying, as it is tricky to anticipate the way the battle is conducted. All you have to do is ram the glass case Dr. Robotnik is standing in, but the floor is made of flamethrowers, and the switch that Robotnik jumps on makes a spark ball appear in the ceiling, which will then chase about after you. As soon as you enter the area, quickly hit the case as quickly and repeatedly as you can - you should be able to get in a good four or five hits, then quickly stand on the very left side of the screen, and let the spark fly over you. When there is no spark about and there are no flames coming out of the floor, jump over and get a hit on him (it's the best time to do so). Keep doing this, and don't worry if you lose a few lives, as it is quite tricky but you'll get the hang of it. When you hit the glass enough times, it will break. You done it! =============================================================================== 6. Items =============================================================================== Bonus Panel ----------- This is found at the end of every first and second act of every zone. Touching it will finish the level. The panel will spin and reveal one of four pictures. Here's what each of them are: Dr. Robotnik - You get nothing at all. Better luck next time! Exclaimation Point - If you have 50-99 rings when you touch the panel, this appears - it takes you to the Special Stage! One-Up - A picture of Sonic - this gives you an extra life! Ring - You get 10 rings. Not of much practical use when you've just beaten a level, but at least it adds a bit to your Ring Score. Chaos Emeralds -------------- Sacred, special jewels. There are six in the game; one is hidden in each zone. Collect them all to get a special ending when you beat the game! Monitors -------- Arrow - Smash this, and if you die in the level, you will restart from the last Arrow monitor you smashed. Invincible - Stars surround Sonic for a few seconds, making him invulnerable to badnik attacks. One-Up - A picture of Sonic. Smash this to get an extra life! Power Sneakers - These make Sonic run faster for a short amount of time. Shield - A blue bubble will surround Sonic, making him able to withstand one badnik attack without losing rings. Super Ring - Gives you 10 rings. =============================================================================== 7. Chaos Emerald Locations =============================================================================== Green Hill Zone --------------- Location: Act 2 Information: When you re-enter the cavern from the right-hand side of the area, jump over the first gap and over the spring, then go down the next gap, head left a little and go down another gap, and you will see the emerald in the little alcove to the right. Bridge Zone ----------- Location: Act 1 Information: You'll see the emerald on a little platform underneath a spring and just to the left of a bridge that crumbles when you step on it. To get this emerald, simply stand on a piece of the bridge and allow it to fall, then quickly jump to the left to get the emerald. Jungle Zone ----------- Location: Act 1 Information: After you cross the long, thorny wooden platform you'll come to a waterfall. Wait for a log to come down, then jump on it and let it take you down, then jump onto the platform to the left. Just to the left of this is a log in the water. Drop onto this log and head left across the water to find the emerald in a little alcove. Labyrinth Zone -------------- Location: Act 2 Information: This is the easiest of all the emeralds to find. Just before the end of the level, it's in a niche in a wall to the left. Scrap Brain Zone ---------------- Location: Act 2 Information: From the first room full of conveyor belts, go to the top-right area of the room. Run down the long tunnel and fall down the ring-filled gap. To the right, the path splits in two - take the top path and go through the doorway. In the next room, run up the slope and jump over the first two gaps and fall down the third one. Go right, through the gate, and step into the teleporter. The emerald is to the left of where you reappear. Sky Base Zone ------------- Location: Act 2 Information: Using the flying platforms below your starting location, fly round to the front of the blimp. The emerald is to the left of the "drill-end". =============================================================================== 8.
