The Nintendo DS went public in Japan this past week, allowing non industry people to get a chance at "Touching" for the first time. IGN was in attendance and touched so much that we were driven to make a video tour of the event exclusively for Insiders. Look down a few pages for links to the five minute video.
This week's Gaming Life in Japan also continues our coverage of the PSP and NDS launches. The NDS is still leading the hype train, with Nintendo in full gear across all advertising fronts. Sony, having just announced pricing and release information for the PSP last week, has kept mostly quiet since. Be sure and check out week four of our pre-launch coverage.
We've also got a look at the Japanese launch of Halo 2, the latest Sega Press flier and a bunch of commercials for all the upcoming games.
First, turn the page for a couple of pertinent letters.
LETTERS WITH TANAKA
Hello, I am John Tanaka. I am the question answerer and letter receiverer here at IGN Japan.
Before answering your questions for this week, I would like to ask you a question of my own. Do you have a question about the Japanese game market? Do you want to express your thoughts on anything Japanese game related? Do you like one of our young idols and want to let the world know about your perversions?
If any of these apply to you, send your mail to the Gaming Life in Japan mailbox. We get thousands of letters every day, so we will not be able to answer all of them personally. However, we will post the best ones here.
Let us begin the exciting column for this week.
LETTER #1
Hello. I'm Andy and I am a stupid head. I live in the Kochi part of Japan where they speak a strange form of local Japanese that no one else in the country can understand. Anyhow, I'd like to point out that PSP pre-orders have actually begun over here. One large retailer, Yamada Denki, is taking pre-orders for both the PSP and DS. Just thought I'd let you know. -- Andy
TANAKA RESPONDS: Thank you for the heads-up, stupid head. We would encourage you to check with the retailer on if a pre-order will actually secure you a system. Sony Computer Entertainment will have to allot systems very strictly on launch day, as there are only 200,000 to go around. You will probably have to pay in full in order to be sure you have a system secure.
LETTER #2
Hey Guys. Help me out if possible. I'm in Japan right now and I'll be here for the next year or so. I want to get a Japanese videogame system and I was hoping to play a game with English subtitles so that I can learn some Japanese from playing. What system and games do you recommend? Or if there are no games that fit the bill, I wanted to get a one of those cool bundles that Japan always gets. What console has the best bundle/themed console on the market right now? Thanks for any help. -- Gabriel
TANAKA RESPONDS: Thank you for your questions, Gabriel. There are not too many games that have English subtitles. However, there are more games that have English voices with Japanese subtitles -- Resident Evil and Onimusha come to mind. If you are serious about learning Japanese, have you considered learning Hiragana and Katakana first? Once you know these, you will be able to look up words that you do not know. Most Nintendo games are made for younger gamers and thus include readings for all the kanji.
As for your bundle question, no system has greater bundles than the Xbox. The Platinum 3 pack arrives on 11/18 with Halo, Top Spin, Blinx 2, Project Gotham 2 and the DVD playback kit, all for under $180! You can also consider getting the upcoming PS2/GT4 racing bundle, or, if you want to play Final Fantasy XI, the PS2 network pack.
LETTER #3
Would you happen to have anymore info on the Giant Robo game for the PS2? What type of genre is it? Also, any word of any official release date for Super Robot Wars: OG2 (GBA)? chinito77
TANAKA RESPONDS: We were not aware that so little was known on Giant Robo when we posted the advertisement in last week's issue. Since that time, we have learned plenty of information about the game. Please turn to the next page for a quick recap of what can be expected of this game.
Super Robot Wars: Original Generation 2 is still listed in Famitsu for a Winter release. However, as Super Robot Wars games are released so frequently, we are sure you can count on seeing it early in the season rather than late.
Remember to send all your Japan-related questions and letters to the Gaming Life in Japan mailbox. Who knows, perhaps you will be made famous by having your letter printed in the next Gaming Life in Japan.

HEIRO TSU
Were you one of those crazed fans who pre-ordered Halo 2 and waited in line for three or more hours to get your copy? Ha ha ha ha ha... fool you! You should've just come to Japan. In Microsoft's weakest market, there'll be no need to preorder the Xbox's biggest game ever, and we don't expect there to be too many lines to pick it up (Kingdom Hearts, on the other hand, may be a bit trickier given the tendency of big Game Boy Advance games to disappear quickly).
Still, there's definitely something resembling a "launch" for Halo 2 over here. Just as we're doing with our continuing coverage of the NDS and PSP launches, we've decided to give you a quick look at how Microsoft is handling Halo 2 in a market where nine out of ten Xbox owners think Kasumi is a real person (we made that stat up -- don't send mail).
First, the basics. Halo 2 arrives to Japan on 11/11, a couple of days after America, but matching up perfectly with the Thursday release schedule followed by most publishers (even Nintendo, once entrenched in the annoying Friday release habit, has switched to Thursday). Interestingly enough, if this had been last week, MS would've probably released Halo 2 on a Wednesday, as most other publishers did the same due to a holiday. Using our "source," which sells games as soon as shipments arrive (usually the day before release), we would've gotten the game late Tuesday our time, just prior to you.
The Japanese version of Halo 2, although arriving so quickly following the US version, is a fully localized version, complete with Japanese voices. This is somewhat of a rarity for the Japanese Xbox market, where many games fall into the World Collection and see no localization what-so-ever (all the in-game text, even for the menus, is in English). Fully localizing Halo 2 in such a timely fashion must've taken a lot of effort on Microsoft's part.
Those in Japan wishing to compliment their Xbox with...
THE BEST XBOX
GAME THERE EVER WAS
... will be able to do so via a number of packages. Let's take a look at this print ad, which takes up space in the latest issue of Famitsu, for specifics:
Three Halo 2 packages will be available: Halo 2: Standard Edition (7,140 yen), Halo 2: Limited Edition (7,140 yen) and Halo 2: Limited Edition with Xbox Live (9,975 yen). The limited edition seems to be the same as the US version, with a metal case and DVD included. It's limited to just 30,000 units. The Xbox Live version includes twelve months of Live, the voice communicator Halo 2 limited edition; this package is limited to 5,000 units.
You'll notice that the limited edition and standard editions are the same price. You'll also notice that that price is more than what you'd normally pay for a game in America. Welcome to Japan (and don't blame MS -- Squenix is the worst offender of pricing games at ridiculously lofty prices).
There's one more means to obtain...
THE BEST XBOX
GAME THERE EVER WAS
... aside from these three packages. For clarification, let's turn to the Halo 2 television spot. Yes, Microsoft is actually giving television time to this title. And we're not talking just late night ads between the pseudo porn shows. We grabbed this spot after our favorite afternoon drama rerun and before our most hated early evening trash news (also known as "Japanese news") program.
| Halo 2 Microsoft, Xbox Release: 11.11.04
|
As revealed in the above commercial, Microsoft is continuing its "Platinum Pack" lineup of ridiculousness. Set for release on 11/18 is the Platinum Pack 3. The 19,000 yen bundle includes the Xbox system, DVD playback kit, two months of Xbox Live, Blinx 2, Top Spin, Halo 2 and Project Gotham Racing 2. That's right, all this Xbox gaming for under $180!
Oh wait... we goofed. The package doesn't actually include Halo 2 -- it has the platinum collection version of the original Halo. Apparently, Microsoft is apparently trying to get people to buy Halo 2 by offering this package, which sounds like a bonafide attempt at making money. We expect to see more of this sort of behavior once the next generation arrives.
Outside of television commercials and print ads, Microsoft is also tackling the retail side of marketing Halo 2 and the Xbox in Japan. Stationed at the tiny Xbox section of the large Bic Camera outlet in Shinjuku is this guy:
He's wearing an Xbox outfit, and he's always at the Xbox station whenever we visit the store (it's actually IGN Japan's recommended game shop). Best of all, he always seems to be busy writing stuff. Is he managing all those Xbox pre-orders? Or is he listing reasons why the Xbox doesn't sell in Japan? What's he doing? We've no idea!
One day, we were shopping for an Xbox D-cable in the game cable section right next to where this guy is stationed. He was quick to notice our confusion and came over to explain that Xbox doesn't have a D-cable, but Bic sells a converter that switches from component to the D format. We went home that day and played Soul Calibur II in high resolution. All because of this guy's kindness. We call him Tanaka! And he's the nicest Japanese Xbox fan ever!
Back to Halo 2.
While we're sure the above guy will gladly explain the merits of...
THE BEST XBOX
GAME THERE EVER WAS
... to interested gamers, Microsoft is making sure they won't have to ask. Being distributed at most game shops is the following Halo 2 pamphlet.
In addition to an explanation of the game, the pamphlet makes mention of a special campaign being held at Microsoft's Japanese Halo 2 website. Those who pick up the game can enter in a drawing to win a special "Kubrick" Master Chief figure. Best of all, 4000 of the figures will be given out, meaning you have a 1 in 1 chance of winning (just kidding -- the original Halo actually sold ten times that amount in its first week, and the sequel may follow).
Microsoft is also giving Halo 2 a push through more grass-roots means. A couple of days back, the company invited the Japanese press to play Halo 2 in a spiffy Dolby-enhanced gaming rig. For pictures from that, check out Impress GameWatch (we're not the Japanese press, so we weren't invited). MS also has a promotion lined up with MTV Japan, with the music station airing a Making of Videogames documentary focusing on Halo 2.
Despite all this effort, Halo 2 will still likely get less than 1% of its worldwide sales through the Japanese market. The game probably doesn't have much of a chance of topping the Dead or Alive games as the biggest Xbox titles in Japan (Xbox owners in Japan seem to like the Tecmo fighter). Of course, Microsoft probably knows both of these to be true.
If you have questions about this look at the Halo 2 Japanese launch, hesitate slightly, then drop us a line at the IGN Japan mailbag.

NINTENDO WORLD
Nintendo kicked off its year end Nintendo World Touch! DS tour of Japan this past week. Picking up where Space World and Shoshinkai left off, this show gives gamers a chance to try out Nintendo's upcoming lineup prior to release.
Starting in Nagoya this past Wednesday, the show proceeded on to Osaka over the weekend and is scheduled to land in Tokyo later this week. It will finish up later this month with stops in Fukuoka and Sapporo.
We couldn't wait to get our hands on the the latest from the DS, so we decided to take the $100 bullet train trip from Tokyo to Nagoya early Wednesday. We posted a number of stories from the event on IGNDS, IGNCube and IGN Game Boy, but if you missed out on anything, be sure and check out these links:

Since the other IGN channels have already hosted pictures and articles from the Nagoya event, we thought we'd give Insiders an extra bonus by tapping into all the video footage that we grabbed from the show floor and assembling a quick video tour. Our five minute look inside the Nintendo World event focuses on the sights and sounds of the event rather than gameplay.

PSP, NDS LAUNCH
Gaming Life in Japan was around for the launch of the GameCube, but that was rather quiet with a meager three games that we'd already played to death at three trade show appearances. We were around for the launch of the Xbox, but that, expectedly, wasn't the be-all-and-end-all of launches. Game Boy Advance SP? An exciting launch, but it wasn't exactly a new system.
So this year's near-simultaneous launches of the Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable have us more excited than we've ever been about product launches since the start of this feature some three years ago. Both systems are eagerly anticipated, both represent huge investments by their parent companies, and both look as though they'll launch with massive software lineups.
Throughout the coming weeks, we'll be taking a look at the launch frenzy surrounding these two systems. Be sure and check back with Gaming Life in Japan to see how Sony Computer Entertainment and Nintendo are getting the message out that theirs' is the portable to get.
PRE-LAUNCH: WEEK 5
Following the initial unveiling of the PSP price point and launch details, Sony has been quiet on the PSP launch front. A few release dates slipped out and were added to our release list towards the end of the Gaming Life in Japan column. Famitsu devoted a good amount of space in its latest issue to Ridge Racers, providing some much needed exposure for the system's games.
Aside from that, this week was all NDS, NDS and more NDS! November 3 was the big day -- the start of the NDS pre-order campaign and of the NDS nation-wide tour. We already covered the tour earlier in this issue (you did download the video, didn't you?), so let's take a look at the pre-order program.
Unlike most game products, pre-orders for the NDS required interested parties to put down the full price of the system, 15,000 yen. To make sure that we got one of the 300,000 units set for launch, we handed over the cash (and proceeded to lose our pre-order slip -- hope that doesn't cause problems).
A week later, and most retailers still seem to have the system available for pre-order. Yodobashi Camera in Shinjuku is an exception, though, with the retailer no longer taking reservations at the famous location pictured above.
Nintendo has also started advertising the NDS more visibly. The TV spots that we shared here before are still aired frequently. But even better were these two billboards that we saw in the crowded Shibuya area of Tokyo:
The above building is one of the most famous landmarks in Tokyo -- the multistory Tsutaya retailer with the world's most successful Starbucks in its lower floors. The NDS ads on either side of the building are very noticeable.
Ads targeting specific games have yet to appear. Sega's the exception, with Feel the Magic's Japanese version spreading its love at retail. This display greets visitors to the game floor of Bic Camera's west Shinjuku shop:
In addition, Sega has started distributing cute little Feel the Magic fliers at most videogame retailers. The fliers are shaped like the chick from the game!
We definitely feel the magic, enough to buy the game at launch. Now let's hope Nintendo starts its game-based advertising campaign soon.

HOUKOKU CORNER
Welcome to the Gaming Life in Japan Japanese ad section, where you'll find the latest game advertisements, commercials and pamphlet scans from Japan. Every week, we'll be bringing you commercials, ads and pamphlets that we've spotted on TV, in magazines and at retailers or trade shows. Also be sure and check out the back issues section for previous installments.
This week, we've got lots of commercials for you (download the Ratchet ad! Just do it!) as well as a return of an old fan favorite, Sega Press! Sega's changed its retail pamphlet since last we scanned it. The pamphlet is now on small paper and comes stapled rather than folded. It doesn't scan as well as before, but we're sure you can still get your Sega (and Sammy) fix.
If you have questions or thoughts about these pamphlets, ads or commercials, don't hesitate to drop us a line at the IGN Japan mailbag.

RELEASE DATES
Trouble keeping up with what's due out in Japan? We don't blame you! Every day, as many as five Pachinko sims are released for the PSX alone. And then there's the horse racing games. Good lord... don't mention the horse racing games!
This Import release section of IGN Japan will help you sort through the mess. We only include games that have either their day or month of release confirmed. There are many more games than this coming out to Japan, but most of them currently have TBA dates. Most of the sections are complete up to the data recorded in the latest issue of Japan's Famitsu magazine.
A request to our readers. If you encounter an error in these charts (like a game listed twice, for instance), please tell us.
